24:02 "We met many years ago..." It's crazy because this is in fact the first time that Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne have appeared in a film together since the Matrix trilogy. ❤ Speaking of referencing the Matrix, the green font that the secretaries use on the old computers is a clear visual nod to those films. And... there's also a running joke among the fans that the John Wick films is actually the alternate storyline where Neo took the Blue Pill instead of the Red.
@mattp6089
@mattp6089 Жыл бұрын
There's also usually a blue/green tint to scenes where John is in control of the situation, and other tints for other situations, which is similar to the green tint in the Matrix and more natural tones in the 'real world' dynamic.
@rabid_si
@rabid_si Жыл бұрын
> "[...]the green font that the secretaries use on the old computers is a clear visual nod to those films." Neat idea, but a bit of a stretch. Green text on old computers was exceedingly common for old CRTs (green phospor is cheap and long lasting) which is why it's so prevalent. Alone, it's hard to call it a Matrix reference because it is used so often.

Winston is such a class act. In the Piazza, he demonstrated just how much power he has, without creating any fuss or drawing attention to it. John Wick is not dead because Winston ' Deemed it not to be.' He then gives John a Marker, the significance of this will become apparent in the next film.

I know this one was tough for you, but thank you for reacting to it. I totally understand why you need a break from the slaughter. This being said, it’s an absolute masterpiece of a sequel, imo. The montage with the sommelier and the tailor is possibly one of my favorites in the entire franchise thus far. I just got a shirt with the tailor exchange: “Tell me, Mr Wick, is this a formal event or a social affair?” “Social.” “And is this for day or evening?” “I need one for day and one for night.” “And what style?” “Italian.” “How many buttons?” “Two.” “Trousers?” “Tapered.” “How about the lining?” “TACTICAL.” RIP Lance Reddick. Chapter 3 is also fantastic. Absolutely stoked for Chapter 4.

The suicide scene in the bath in Rome is a reference to ancient Roman history. Specifically the death of Seneca the philosopher. Seneca was Emperor Nero’s primary teacher when he was growing up. Later Nero got tired of Seneca’s advice on how to rule properly and threw Seneca out of the palace. Seneca continued to publicly criticize Nero’s rule. Nero eventually sent soldiers to kill Seneca, but Seneca was warned and chose to kill himself by slitting his wrists in a bath rather than let Nero decide how he would end his life. It’s a very clever historical reference that fits very well with the storyline of the movie.

12:30 "Are you here for the Pope?" That line actually is a little funnier and has an interesting twist. What's funny is that John Wick just might be one, if not the only, of a few who could possibly pull off assassinating the Pope. Here's the bizarre twist, in a deleted scene, during the montage when John plans his mission, he also actually visits the Vatican. One of the bishops he meets actually reviews the mission and John's target and declares it to be valid and allows him to proceed with it. This scene was originally meant to indicate that not only was the Vatican and the Pope himself part of the High Table... but they they also had some crazy level of control over the organization as a whole.

I love the Sommelier Scene. As you said “they’re speaking another language”, and one I understand. As a firearm collector, I like that the writers took the time to do their homework to get terminology right. Keanu himself also spent 6 months doing intensive shooting training, getting so proficient that he could easily do a National Competition. At one point the Director had to tell Keanu to slow down his moves because he was moving so fast the camera couldn’t keep up and it was all a blur.

So my theory is, it's only been like a week or so since the first movie, and that Russian guy put out a multimillion dollar price on John Wick's head. Because of that, lots of assassins came to New York to try and get the money, when they normally work elsewhere. The contract was withdrawn, but a lot of assassins who had already gotten on planes to fly to New York decided to stick around for a little while, see the sights, take in a Broadway show, and maybe pick up a little local work before heading home to wherever they normally live and operate. But then in the second movie, another contract gets put out on John Wick that's even larger, so all those assassins who flew in and stayed for a little while then decided to pick up the new contract. And because the contract is bigger than before, a bunch more assassins also started flying in. If you're one of the world's top assassins and you hear about a contract this big, you're gonna finish up whatever you're doing and then head to New York as soon as possible. So that's the reason why there's so many assassins in New York in these movies. Besides that, New York has a lot of population, a lot of organized crime, and both the UN and Wall Street which would make it a good place for all sorts of shady characters and wet work. New York in real life probably has a larger number of assassins than your average city, even per capita. But the reason why there's so many in these films is because they're coming from all around the world to make millions of dollars on a single job, and earn the reputation as being the one who finally killed John Wick.

@Dayspring by that, i mean that it was just more of the same...again. which 2 already was more of the same. Then they did the typical cliche, of adding a female partner/sidekick. THAT was their extent of changing it up. Oh ya, and add more dogs, 'cause the audience loved that in the first 2. It was again, just more of the same, as 1 and 2. Shooty, shooty, punchy, kicky. Bark, bark. Exact same moves, ramped up even more. I didn't say it was a 'bad' movie. It just was more of the same thing, again. Hell, part 2 even repeated a bunch of the same dialogue from 1. And from what i've seen of part 4, it's the same thing all over, rinse and repeat. Change locales, wow. And it'll make tons of $$$, the masses eat that up. The best statement I've ever heard, made by a viewer, 5 minutes into a movie. "This seems really easy all though he just killed like 6 people." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Keep up the good work. Long time sub., First time commenter.

John's two biggest enemies are - cars and phone conversations. I mean he always gets hit and has phone calls where he doesn't say a word and just hangs up.

If you haven't you should definitely check out The Equalizer with Denzel Washington. It's a John Wick-esqe movie with a great storyline and one of Denzels best performances

Something about these films is that this world kind of exists on a different level than our everyday world. It's why you see them walking around, shooting each other, and people mostly just not reacting to it. Because this world is hidden from ours. Just below the surface. Slightly out of focus. Etc. It's a clever way to heighten things. The next film goes a little deeper into the lore of the world and has some stunning action pieces in it. Keanu's ability to be so extremely proficient with the weapons thanks to countless hours practicing and training with real tactical teams is next level impressive. A couple of points: First rule of assassination is to always assassinate the assassin after. You never just shoot them once. Double Tap. One in the chest, one in the head. Either one alone may not kill a person. People survive gunshots to the head more often than you would guess... same for heart. But both... you not gonna make it. When Wick puts you down, it's for good.

The 3rd movie got more story thru the killing 😜🙈👍. The second one is where he breaks it all but pieces will be put together back in the 3rd and cant wait for the 4rth 🥳🐺✌️

That blood marker in the beginning means that the guy did a favor to Wick in the past and bound it by blood which means if he needs a favor John Wick is blood bound to honor it. Which he refused. That's why he blew up his house. Edit: Btw the mirror room was a tribute to a Bruce Lee film, Enter the Dragon. There are few references to other "fighter" movies from the past in the John Wick movies.

The action and visuals of these films are incredible. Worth watching for that alone. As you said the plot only gets more far fetched from here on, as well as the violence. Another film to consider is Collateral with Tom Cruise. His character is sort of a bad guy version of John Wick.

Cassie: "Is there anyone else in a movie that is portrayed so like... a superhero... like that's not... like that literally can take down hundreds of people on their own." My first thought: "Girl, you need to watch Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando". My second thought: Well, you may have already seen one. Although, not in a movie, but a series. And though, not a Superhero, per se, but close. Luke Skywalker took out 79 Dark Troopers on his own in Chapter 16 of the Mandalorian. That's like taking out 790 people. And he did that in just a few minutes. My third thought: Well, I know of someone who is CAPABLE of taking out hundreds of people on his own. Frank Castle... The Punisher.

I just watched The Nice Guys for the first time in a while on the weekend. I bet you’d like it. It’s set in the 1970’s where Ryan Gosling plays a private investigator who teams up with Russell Crowe who’s a guy who people hire to rough up people they have problems with. They team up to find a missing girl. It’s a funny, buddy-cop type movie. Have a good one. 🇦🇺👍

The guy who plays Winston, Ian McShane, starred as a loveable (bit of a) rogue antique dealer in a 90s UK show called Lovejoy. Well worth a watch for some gentle un-John Wick type viewing.

Looking forward to watching Cassie get totally traumatized by the excellent ultra-violence in this, the second installment in simply one of the finest action franchises in cinematic history. And rest in peace to Lance Reddick, a brilliant actor and apparently all-around great guy. I raise my glass to you, Sir. 🥃

I agree, they keep getting better. 1 had a poor final fight, 2 improved with Cassian and a real cliffhanger. Chapter three 100% has the best fights and the most variation with another big cliffhanger. Its 3, 2, 1 or me.
