I think the reason the action in *John Wick* works so well is that while, yes, it is stylised, it's still believable because that's actually Keanu Reeves playing the character & performing the stunts himself. The shooting & martial arts displayed are actually used in real-life (jujitsu, Centre Axis Relock, etc). Every movement is very efficient and makes sense - John's not throwing ridiculous roundhouse kicks or dual-wielding handguns in slow-motion like his *Matrix* counterpart. This makes the action realistic enough to believe but still stylised enough to enjoy.

Xanatos712 for me it works for the same reasons and the fact that everyone knows who he is and he has that "elite" reputation. So when we watch the world play out, it's more believable because we have the affirmation of other characters telling us he's a badass.

Xanatos712 i think you should also add the fact that you actually care for John. He is very sympathetic and well developed character, and Keanu does a great job at humanizing him, despite the character being such a ridiculously trained badass. This was the biggest problem I had with Atomic Blonde - Charlize was amazing, action was freaking great, but her character just barely had any development or interesting motive to get behind. So I was just watching beautiful things happening on screen without actually caring, and that was the problem.

I think we can all agree that great camera work had a huge role to play in the action. It's obvious that Wick is highly skilled, so the smooth camera work complements his abilities, and even adds to his character. Where shaky cam would give the audience a sense of confusion, as is common in an actual fight, the smooth and steady movements of the camera in both movies convey a sense of calm focus, standing in stark contrast to the fight at hand. Just as John appears remarkably placid despite gunning down twenty men as casually as you or I would crack open a cold one. Also, it helps that we're able to actually see the action, something shaky cam would not allow.

My favourite thing about the action in John Wick 1 and 2, is the fact that John himself always feels human. Yes, he is easily the most skilled person in the world, but you can see the effect everytime he gets hit, and that he struggles with all of these hits coming in rapid succession.

I really hope they do to ensure that studios can't screw it up with sequels in the future. They've already announced that the third movie will be the last, but the studios could always bring it back with enough money. The spinoff tv series could work as long as they stay away from John Wick as much as possible.

Firstly, great analysis. Really liked the breakdown of internal logic affects the credibility of a movie. However, I don't think weakening John Wick is a good solution. The reason is that John Wick is the Boogeyman not because he is faster/stronger/more skilled than anyone else, but rather because he endures all that can be thrown at him. His skills are normal, but his ability to endure all punishment is really the only standout quality. This is the reason why he feels as unstoppable as he does - he moves slow enough for us to get what he is doing, reacts to events he hasn't planned for, and even gets injured, but all this doesn't slow him down. It hurts him, and we get to see it, but he continues to kick just as much ass as he did before by compartmentalizing the pain. I'd argue that all of the movies are at least semi-realistic, because John's supreme endurance seems to be the only unrealistic part of the series, but is also the most essential part of the character. Rather, I feel that exploring what gives him this superhuman ability (on an emotional level) would be an interesting direction to go.

the Club Scene in John-wick 2 is in my Opinion the best action scene in Cinematic History. From the way John is able to kill the guards in a packed crowd without even hurting a civilian, to the way he checks his gun after he reloads is Orgasmic...

In terms of themes and John as a character, there's really not that much beneath its surface. The Apes reboot trilogy worked because Cesar was genuinely a great character, ending that trilogy with a gritty drama worked because the 2nd one hinted at Cesar being more than just an ape, the 3rd concluded his character arch as someone who has more humanity in him than humans do. I think John Wick 3 could work if they do decide to go over the top action .

Something which gets overlooked (just barely) with the John Wick series is how the directors/action coordinators were drawn from longtime stunts backgrounds. Instead of recruiting sophomoric indie directors to helm mega franchises these draw on the real knowledge of old hands from a part of the business which often gets dismissed as so many hired hands. Larger movies need great action coordinators. The last two Captain America movies are good examples of skillfully dividing the specializations, while the John Wick movies (and others like the Deadpool series) show that Hollywood has some stunt people who can actually be the bosses behind the cameras.

I think the best thing for Chapter 3 would be to have John be much more reliant on stealth and infiltration than just straight up balls to the wall action. This makes sense since the whole world is literally after him now and he can't fight them all at once, and it would be the biggest change of style the series has seen while still providing a cool and entertaining piece.

Bear with me if I fail to describe this correctly and my point ends up not coming across right but I'm curious if it would work to have JW3 be a much slower film. And I see a lot of people in the comments referencing the style of Logan which was fantastic and I think really the best thing for Logan was that it was so different. The story, the pace, the characters all different. And just like a lot the fellow commenters here I wonder if a Logan style slow down would be a good fit for the end of the trilogy. It would for sure be interesting I think especially cause...probably most of us finished John Wick 2 and figured right away that JW3 will end up being even bigger. If the movie is actually more slow it'll defy those expectations which can be an interesting twist. (Although it's a gamble for sure and difficult to pull off. Some praised the Last Jedi for daring to be different and others condemned it for example.) Instead of many intense action sequences, we have a John Wick who's injured, on the run, limited resources, possibly even trying to avoid fighting if possible, every fight is a close call and it seems like John just barely comes out on top and you wonder if at any moment will he break. The fights are maybe not the same kind of grace they had in the first two with all the skill combined with the weapons abd preparedness but doing whatever it took to survive, maybe more hand to hand, having to improvise and use more aspects of the environment to his advantage instead of coming prepared. It would really throw off our expectations but it would bring us back to that semirealistic (or at least that's the goal) and the hope is it could be done without feeling like going backwards as said in the video. Perhaps another way of having a slow down would be John Wick 3 doesn't pick up directly after 2 but it's been some length of time, he's already taken care of a strong amount of enemies. (Flashbacks maybe used to provide some filler and/or exposition like possibly show us how John has had to slow down since the events of 2) Maybe our enemies are more on Wick's level which would make each fight slower and oh so much more desperate, even more intense to sort of replace the many fights/128 kills fast pace of JW2. And even like Logan, we maybe could have John Wick die at the end. Have him complete some final goal and than he could end up killed or just finally succumbs to his wounds. And if you're reading this and it doesn't sound right at all I'm sorry I just want to theorize a strategy as well. Hopefully this makes sense. I know what I described above would be a serious gamble and would have to play out nearly perfectly in order to work but I'm willing to say should they try it, they could do it. Plus Keanu is an incredibly skilled actor, he could make it feel believable. One final thing-this is an awfully stupid thought but after JW2 I thought it would be really funny if we see John fighting and he's out of bullets and basically he's got very little weapons left after a fight and being on the run and limited resources and all, he's like damn it. Now what am I gonna use? Cuts to John at a check out in Wal-Mart buying just this ungodly amount of pencils. 😂 Sorry that's horrendous but it cracks me up.

The John Wick franchise as a whole works in large part because of how successful the world building is because it remembers to SHOW not TELL. Like take Viggo's speech about Baba Yaga, it's intercut with John Wick smashing the floor with a sledge hammer to dig up his pass. But also all 3 films still have an air of mystery and doesn't spoonfeed you everything but instead only tells you what you need to know and leaves the rest of it vague enough that there's always more to learn.

Welp, looks like an essay on Chapter 3 would be up next! Chapter 3 was a great continuation of Chapter 2 and really forces John to face the consequences of the previous movies. It stays about as "realistic" and rule abiding as Chapter 2 but does over the top a few times (the knife fights, characters getting up despite CONSTANTLY getting beaten down, and John staying barely alive after his brutal fall off the continental). But Chapter 3 seriously ups the fighting and things involved in the fights (horse, motorcycles, dogs) and has an amazing gun fight in the continental that bends the rules very well with the adjudicator deconsecrating the continental after John and Winston refuse to abide by her penalties and kill each other. A lot of people aren't big fans of Chapter 3, but for me it's an awesome continuation and payoff to the previous films. I DESPERATELY hope the filmmakers do well with Chapter 4, and I believe they will!

A busy schedule has put me behind on my youtubers so I'm doing some catch-up today. This was a fun analysis, and you nail the two aspects which make these films work; the precise action scenes and the fun world building. I'm particularly interested in how the ending of 2 will effect Wick moving forward. The one thing I'll disagree with is that Fast and Furious (4) is the worst film of its series. Not that I care too much about those movies, but 2 Fast 2 Furious and Tokyo Drift are easily the low points of the series, both largely for the same reason; failing horribly and being "cool" and "hip" for a young audience. I get your criticisms of 4, but that film does benefit from more competent action scenes and a more authentic machismo. This is a minor point though. Strong work on the whole.

I love Keanu and this series is a big reason why. He is one of the hardest working guys in the movie biz I think, and he makes really good choices with his projects. John Wick is interesting to compare with The Raid series. Both are gritty action movies with almost entirely real stunts and martial arts. The first movie of both series is a very focused action movie with an almost laughably simple plot that is just enough to carry the movie forward and feature awesome action. And the second movie of both is a sprawling crime epic that focuses much more on the greater world hinted at in the first movie.

In the past two movies we’ve seen John in an offensive position, now we’ll see him for the very first time in a defensive position. That should be enough for giving a different story for the third movie, regardless the style chosen for it. Great video, I really enjoyed it, really good analysis and well explained points.

Even though it ramped up the body count, I don't entirely think you can say that Chapter 2 went for the cheese. All the extra time spent building the universe (over established ideas from the first film) really seemed to ground the story and background of what Wick is actually capable of as a character in his reality. Making the effort to build that world really works to sell the ideas since, as you said in regards to Alien, the distance between our universe and the one presented becomes well enough defined that the actions of the character and the setpieces can represent that universe without seeming too ridiculous to be plausible and breaking your sense of immersion. Unrelated but I'm still very excited about the final chapter, since this series is probably the best made, tightest shot action franchise in the last couple decades. For me, it's up there with classics like _Hard Boiled._

I really agree with the idea if making tge third film more grounded and realistic, a grittier and more character focused story than the first two. Going even bigger and louder would take things far too over the top, instead a story about John on the run, struggling to survuve focusing on him a bit more rather than just the action, and also expanding the world more in the process as he traverses it trying to find salvation, that would be the way to go for me.

John Wick 3 should be about a couple of well trained assassins that gp hunt for John. Gives a different movie because it is not about how many henchmen he can kill but more about outsmarting opponents on his level. Atleast, I would love to see this and I think it would give the third movie a fresh feel without abandoning the universe they created.

As cheesy and overdone as it is, they could introduce someone on the same skill level as John Wick for the antagonist of the next movie. I know the whole "the protagonist but evil " thing is overdone, but it could be one way to make John Wick seem more grounded without actually grounding it. Lower the body count, tone down the over the top action in favor of some good long form fight scenes between the two in less populated areas. You can show off their fighting prowess and do some cool environmental stuff, which could reach over the top levels, but in lowering the overall death toll and wounding both characters to slow down the action but still raise the stakes could be good

John Wick vs. Jason Bourne kind of deal? I love it! That actually sounds like a great idea we hadn't thought of. Hey I've seen you comment on some of the other videos. I watched john wick 2 in June2019.... for the first time, shortly afterward I watched the third yeah I tho)ught that John wick 2 was the weakest because he doesn't have his loyalties tested, and he isn't disprespecting someone but as always, he's facing hundreds of men all looking to kill him for abounty I have justification for calling second chapter weakest Viggo shows remorse respect gratitude and regret. He's desperate and yet still shows sparsely an extent of respect to John. he does to Marcus as well. He's personally invested with John. John was the man who secured his power of NY, and nothing is makes it more apparent than that scene after calling Aurelio, where Avi tells him "they agreed to your terms" "have you seen my son" You have Kirill who is presented as a nameless but worthy adversary, equal and the continental, ISNT at the heart of the story, juust a setting for a broken rule, which gets us more invested to know more In the third you have John poisoning everyone he seeks help from, the Doc, Ruska Roma, the dogs, Sofia, The continental, Bowery, and his last friend Winston under threat of death Winston can lose th continental, lot of people paid, including the dogs. You have the shinobi who defeated John and are set up along with Zero and the rest of the crew as equals, or on par with John early on. In john wick 2 ... you have an entitled brat who kills his sister using john as a gun, who sees john as just that, a really good head hunting bullet and he wants him dismissed, he forges new alliance with bowery, they sure improve on the neon noir aesthetic and the rules of the criminal (not so under) world, or at least under the table Cassian and Ares are opponents and enemies to look up to, being foils for each other, but they aren't as compellingly striking fighting opponents as Kirrill was ( for the novelty) or tZero and etc are He loses his home, his phone, the temple of his life with Helen, but his loyalties arent tested, only his status and place among the criminal world. he isnt remotely respected by ares or santino, cassian does but ... it's not like he's been presented as such a threat, he is the only one who has the most valid reason to want to ko kill John in the whole series so far.. Sisincne he killed Gianna Im not saying the second is bad, its far from it, story wise, interpersonally, its the weakest, they sure improved on the lighting though, the fights, I just feel lke ttheyre an extension of the first, and not an expansion as the third was, save for the mirror fight which they tried and succeeded to expand upon in the third with the continental administrations lounge. Where John is given permission to CONDUCT business and kill Winston because paradoxically,, on a personal note : they are friends. Guy may bleed fall hard, take bullets but he lost his freaking finger. and messes with 3 (santino's corpse) prominent members of the high table (berrada and elder one, though he just dceives the latter) then winston shoots him ... sends him tumbling down onto a street. and then winston calls him baba yaga, in possible fear ? Knife fight, library fight, shinobib glass fight, dog john and sophia fight, horse fight, continental hotel shootout, underwater (briefly), ARMORED PERSONNEL TWO BUS LOADS of 'em motorcycles, I miss some, but it defeats the combination of the concert fight, the catacombs, mirror, museum, subway fights, those are sure nice settings, we even get a pencil kill, but the third simply makes the second stale by comparison. Second one is my least favorite for these reasons, it works, but I feel almost disconnected with it, I dont have that with the two others I still think it's sad that in addition to losing his home, having to part with his dog, losing the birthday card he just got back and being forced to work again, the fact that he cant watch videos of Helen anymore was the most heartbreaking thinng the second did to him. in the third he has nothing but friends he poisons with threats of death, he had a wedding ring... he might just think that he lost winston now, or that he turned on him, he has his dog, and the bowery king only sees John in a professional consideration.

Given what was set up in Chapter Two, I predict that the plot of John Wick Chapter 3 will be him being used as a chess piece in the underworld war between the factions. That plot would have the justification for ramping up what fans love about the first 2, the action and the world-building, while also raising stakes and tension as you won't know what situation Wick will end up in next.

Part 3 will perhaps revolve around the marker Winston gave him. But I am buying more into the part 4, if there ever could be one. It should be a prequel to the original John Wick movie... showcasing the ”the impossible task" john pulled with the help of Antonio's marker( as shown in part 2), which earned him the reputation this great. In part 4 it should be, what was that "impossible task" that he pulled off and how did he pulled it off. If that happens, for me John Wick series will be straight number 2 in action series movies beating Batman trilogy and just shy of being number 1 that still goes to thr Bourne Series.

I think all of the John Wick movies (apart from maybe the 3rd) are semirealistic because while the world feels escapist, the combat is brutal and realistic, not like Schwartzannegger or a Marvel superhero doing backflips over enemies and shooting behind their backs. What John does feels believable because while the body count is high, his technique is amazing, but not over the top

In Chapter 3 Put someone who's there to assassinate John someone who's potentially a more skilled fighter and could easily kick his ass in order to raise the stakes. & Show him work with other Stars Like Jason Statham or maybe an older Star like Stallone he could've been his mentor & trained him or hell he could be his father i don't know.

What if instead of doing another revenge movie, they did a redemption story instead? So, instead of John hunting down whoever had the misfortune of pissing him off this time, he's trying to save somebody? Perhaps the child of a member of the high table? Or just somebody who's been targeted for death, same as him? I think it would be really cool, especially given Santonio's little spiel about how vengeance is the only thing John has left. After the end of the second movie, we know that this is truer now than ever. I think if they did a story like this, where John tries to save somebody as a form of redemption, or as some way to prove that he's not just a mindless killer seeking revenge, that there's more to him than just killing, it would add a whole new element to John's character, and would be a great not to end it on.

Good idea, but I think there are better ways to make JW3 fresh. Chiefly, I think what the story needs is to give John a greater purpose. In the first two, John's motives for his killing spree are very individual, very focused. Making John an agent of a larger cause would give the series the expansion it needs to deliver a third entry, without rehashing the same formula as the JW1->JW2 transition, and without stepping back towards realism. You make a good case for realism, but I think it's too late for that--JW2 ends with every assassin in the world gunning for him. Besides, the worn-out old hero is tricky to get right: just look at Batman 3.

for sure as the titles says of the 3rd chapter, but they said they will go back as the style of the 1st movie & not so big as the 2nd one...personally that will be great…the 2nd one is oke no doubt but still love the 1st one a bit more...& as far the leaked videos of chapter 3 filming of john wick...it seems amazing...for example john on a horse...hope they will use it....anyway...the videos looks very promising
