I would recommend my second book first, "Rudimental Remedies." It is a method book in that there is a method to the madness... Several hidden learning agendas in the book. The "Drummer's Rudimental Reference Book" was designed to accompany other method books, solos and general drumming. It was not meant to be played cover to cover but used to target specific problems you might be facing within a solo or other method book or just in general. Both books will truly last you the rest of your life.

Drummer Man, I would never claim to be better than Buddy Rich or Steve Gadd. They are my idols. But I do play set, and steel pans, and marimba and vibraphone and congas, bongo, tabla, classical percussion, etc... i have been teaching percussion at the University of Southern Mississippi for 25 years. Check out our Percussion Ensemble videos on KZbin. I have always taught Rudimental drumming to be the backbone of all other drumming. You have to start with one drum, learn vocabulary and go from there. I don't tour with a big band and make lots of money but I do better than most and I love what I do. I playing steel pans with Bill Summers this weekend at Jazz Fest in New Orleans. There is so much I disagree with you about but I think overall every needs to have a more open mind and not such a narrow view of music. Also, do your research about someone before you judge them from one video on KZbin. By the way, Steve Gadd played in drum corps. He is an excellent Rudimental drummer. So is Buddy Rich. However, Buddy couldn't read a lick of music. Amazing ear though.

Why so angry? Drumming isn't a contest, it's music, art. Y'all need to play football. Seriously, you think the goal for a drummer is to become rich and famous? How old are you? Before I go on, I would like to know if I am talking to a 12 year old or a misguided adult. However, let me say that Rudimental drumming can improve your set playing considerably, especially when you are talking about funk drumming or Latin styles. Some of the greatest drummers out there are very good Rudimental drummers. People I have jammed with on a pad and/or set. Yes, I do play set although I am not rich or famous for doing so. However, I enjoy it very much and I couldn't care less about your opinion of that philosophy or my playing. Any way, let me name a few incredible drummers that Know their rudiments inside and out and do pad practicing routinely: David Garibaldi, Steve Smith, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, Horacio Hernandez, Marvin Smitty Smith, Stanton Moore (we had the same teacher), And the list could be pages longer. So, first of all, none of these guys have the goal of being the best. That's ridiculous. Best what? Comparing musicians is like comparing apples and trombones! Do you think Buddy could do the things Horacio does? Nope, no way, so how do you compare them? I don't know why I'm wasting my time here. Let me end this by saying that if you limit what you learn and live with such negativity, you will never grow. This could be your problem altogether. This is why you are arguing over who is the best drummer ever and that someone that plays a snare drum doesn't know how to play drum set. This conversation is completely absurd. So, that's it for me. Good luck, I'm going to go practice.

@luizfmp88 Music is organized sound. By definition, this is music. You don't have to like it. There are lots of musics that I don't care for, but somebody does. I don't listen to this stuff in my car, it might cause me to wreck. And, no one has ever asked me to come play rudimental snare drum on a gig. But I enjoy playing it because it is challenging, exciting and difficult to make interesting when you have only one pitch to work with. Cheers.

Sincerely , Bailey Jo ( in a southern accent ) 😂 from camp when you asked my name Also sorry for not doing so well at the performance today I was nervous and I’m going into 8 th grade and I was the only middle schooler. Sure jpow890, The "Rudimental Remedies" book has a 2 hour DVD and 951 play along tracks. There are a few exercises in this book that are also in the Rudimental Reference book but most of the exercises and all of the etudes are new material. The tracks help you learn properly and gradually, while intuitively learning about interpretation, style and how to listen. The Rudimental Reference Book has more exercises and more difficult material. It's the Arban book for snare drum.
