Side jumping also puts ruts in the jump. Its just more unnecessary work for the park crew. Also, don't bring your toddler to the park please. Its ABSOLUTELY THE WORST when some ski dad tries to bring their little kid through the park. It's dangerous for both the kid and the park rats. Idk how many arguments I've gotten into with parents who don't understand this concept.

4:33 another reason why side jumping is a bad idea is that it changes the shape of the actual jump onto the rail. When people are hitting the jump normally, it creates a divot that makes it easier for other riders to hit the jump properly. If you hit the jump from the side, it can destroy that divot and actually make the feature harder to hit for other people

Something to add, if there are multiple rails in a line you shouldn't hit one then stop in front of the next one to set up for it if the park is crowded. People are going to be following you and will want to ride the line all the way through, not have to stop in between each rail

Good video. I wish people would have to watch something like this before going into the park. Another good tip: If you have little kids and they aren't good enough to be in the park, don't bring them in the park if it's busy. Wait until it's slow and just bring them into the smaller parks. If I land on an adult doing something stupid I'm not going to feel that bad for the person. If I land on some kid...I'm gonna feel bad. Had a few close calls like that. No fun.

Love the videos! I have a question/video idea:) What’s the best approach to learn new tricks? Get a lesson? Ride with a better boarder? Just go for it? Is there a specific trick progression or feature progression a snowboarder should follow? I’m new to park riding, so I’m wondering what to hit and what to do after. Keep up the great videos!
@hunterpercentsnowboarding38403 жыл бұрын
A lesson should be able to answer all of those questions for you in person. Riding with someone better than you is the best way to learn. Get comfortable doing freestyle tricks like ollies nollies presses 180s and 360s around the mountain before going into the park! 🤙
@rosswest91933 жыл бұрын

Another rule is that if you are just learning how to snowboard or ski, the park area isn't an area you shouldn't be in. I see a lot of people that can barely make a turn going into the park. Also for the parents out there. Don't take your kid into the park area if you and your kid has no intention using the park features. I've seen far to many close call accidents happen because parents think it's ok to make laps in the park with their kid and not hit one feature.
@23JMRH3 жыл бұрын
More people need to speak up!!! When you see the Jerry train coming through the park, tell them to GTFO. Enough people doing that, might have an impact.
@rspurdie3 жыл бұрын
Another reason to avoid side jumping rail and box approaches is that you can throw off the approach with unaligned tracks. If it’s not being raked by park crew all the time (which it won’t be) this can be an issue and make it way harder to hit the rail properly which can cause the likelihood for other riders to get injured to rise.
@oxygenbreather7213 жыл бұрын
just like you said, if you're filming your friends hitting a jump stand as close to the death drop as possible because people like me like to knuckle huck and do nose butters all the time (and for people that are eyeing up the jump) so just keep that in mind.

At 5:45 you mention Hyland Hills. Thats the park I always go to. It's really fun, however, I can agree with you that many people like to sit on features. Side jumping isn’t bad “IF” your checking out the rail for speed and length. Rather do a side pass and have an idea of the lip and feature rather than go all in first without knowing. Same goes for booters. Injuries happen a lot on rails especially ones you have to jump onto. Feel it out first if your not confident. Or fallow a friend that knows the feature to get the speed right. Seen to many people get the speed wrong and pack or land in the flats. Nice vid.
@bodhijohnson28033 жыл бұрын
Just look at it first. Almost always just by looking at it you can get a good idea of speed on rails. There’s a natural hook shape on urban rails that helps you get onto the rail and by doing a Texas air off the side of the feature all you are doing is making the feature harder to hit because you smushed the hook
@jamesbrett50103 жыл бұрын

@@jamesbrett5010 The hook is a rut that forms on the takeoff as people use the rail that makes it easier to get on to it, if you do a straight air (Texas) you turn the hook into just a hole which makes the feature more difficult to use.
@jamesbrett50102 жыл бұрын
@@ddandymann I’ve never heard of the term hook. Nice term as the snow has a curved groove going up to the lip. I’m old and hesitant these days. I’ll usually hit the the side of a jump or fallow someone in on the first hit. If it’s a straight air next to the feature I stay well off to the edge of the lip. It doesn’t really make grooves as I’m not carving and well away from the actual hit line. Thanks for the new term.
@adamharms59763 жыл бұрын
Jumping off the sides of rail features is also dangerous for the future people riding it, when you go to get onto a feature there is a carve line towards the feature with the right angle. If someone goes off the side of the lip in the afternoon say, the person that has been hitting that feature all day could then hurt themselves next hit because the lip is completely different
@jordifolch48323 жыл бұрын
Thats the biggest thing for me, expecially on days with soft snow because leaving a carve line that doesnt go straight onto the feature can really mess with somebody else who hits it after you

Agree 100%. Question? How many people do you yell at or say something to , when you see that happening? I say something every time and sometimes I’m the one getting the dirty looks then. Do a vid explaining detuning edges... I detune all my edges except my right heel edge and my front left edge (like 5-6” befor the edge slopes upwards to the nose of the board... that way you can still jib and never catch an edge.... and if you need to pull the “E-Break” and stop fast.... your right heel edge is sharp and you can stop on a dime (regular stance rider) I tried this experiment a couple seasons ago, and was extremely pleased with the outcome. (I live in Utah, so we don’t deal with Ice hardly ever, but I’ve definitely ruined a new deck (that was given to me) by detuning the edges too much.... and they couldn’t be resharpened:( that’s when I came up with the above detuning method. Hyland Hills is my local hill and I didn’t realize that sitting on rails is weird But people only sit on the rails no one hits

once i was behind a little girl who fell on a box but she fell to the right and i was super close on it so i thought i could easily avoid her but her parents just stood there and laughed while their 5 year old was crying ( i fell on their skis to avoid the already hurt girl

Where I ski we do not have big jumps so we have to jump of the side of raile wedges.

One time a kid was sitting at the bottom and I was hitting a huge jump and I tried to swerve out of the way when I landed but my forearm hit his ski boots and I fractured it

Hey Johnathan ( or anyone else), why does your sticker pack include 'no grab zones'?
@foundwheels19393 жыл бұрын
how about if there is a series of jumps and rails dont hang in between the 2' get off the he side. I see people hiking features and lining up blocking them when i want to drop in with speed i got from the last feature, move out the way

I own skis and bought a snowboard but broke my wrist last season and it hasn’t healed well so I’m stuck skiing for the rest of the season mfw

I completely agree with you. Used to ski but switched to snowboarding and I am able to progress so much faster on a snowboard. I am much better in powder and the terrain park on skis and am almost as good in the trees as I was on skis. I am sure I will conquer those double black tree runs one day on my snowboard!

@@sergeantbananiel3438 dude, that’s crazy I’ve got the same situation, I broke my wrist snowboarding last season. And had to miss my hockey season. So now I ski

People always sit on features at alpine valley. It's so annoying, especially when they don't move

There was a video of yours (i think) that i watched where ski patrol tried to take season passes from you till you completed a safety class and they mentioned that you were going too close to other people and too fast. They called it something like dusting or something?

Someone needs to make this type of vid for tourist who come to Hawaii and try to run out into the ocean during a swell with their floatation device. Not only would it save their life or avoid a medical bill, it will make their visit more enjoyable, aloha everybody.

Bro great video! As someone just starting in the park I do make the effort to follow etiquette. I’ve already experienced people following me to close or hitting a feature damn near on my tail and I actually wrecked hard at T line last week coming off a box when a dude shot out of the trees(under a rope mind you) and cut in front of my landing area. It scared the s#!t out of me and I panicked lol. I landed on my shoulder and hip. Thankfully I just got bruised up a little. If it had been firm snow my old a$$ hip would have shattered hahaha 🤣. I don’t think you could make to many etiquette videos honestly.

Coming from Minnesota and constantly going to hyland I will say I have definitely seen people breaking every unwritten or unspoken rule in this video. The park etiquette is basically nonexistent there.
