I just bought a mini lathe and was looking for a video to modify it. Perfect timing finding this video. well explained.

Glad you enjoyed the video, The proxxen mini lathe would do a better job, and I ready for an upgrade, but this modified min lathe as served me well over the last 5 years, and I made all my masts and spars with it

Hi Ron. I missed this comment. You will find making mast on the mini lathe so much easier
@ronkrijbolder4374 жыл бұрын
@@Johnbuildsiconic In the past i used a drill to shape masts en yards. It works but leaves a lot of sawdust and due to the fact that you have to keep the sandpaper rolled up in your hand moving it up and down to sand down mast or yard it did n't allways feel safe. You have to be aware of the heat that is devolping. It hapenned every once and a while a mast would break and that is not cool. I have purchesed a minilathe and going to buy a second one to create something that is going to be semilar to what you did.

Sir, can you teach how to replace the chuck? I bought the same to carve resin eggs but the height is too low to fit. Would appreciate your wisdom.
@kevinbrister88013 жыл бұрын
I would use the same concept as this guy did. Instead of extending the length just add height to the motor and tail stock so it gives you more clearance between the bottom of your material and the base of the tool! If need to, accommodate the same distance for tool rest.
@walterhynson2898 Жыл бұрын
you really need to read a book on lathe work because you are holding the cutter backwards,also to extend the length just buy another length of profile ,also bolt the lathe down to a larger piece of plywood than clamp that to the workbench as that is much safter than to let the thing vibrate around and put on some saftey glasses.

hey John Truly enjoy your builds mate. new to you over the past 3 or 4 days. watching your HMS Victory builds of, I think, De Agostini. \great and enjoyable videos! On this video of the Lathe modification, do you think you could possibly gain another 2 or 3 inches in say mast length by turning the centreing cone 180 degrees around to face away from the chuck. Then, turn the whole sliding lock plate around, having the locking wing nuts now in front instead of behind. i hope this is of help buddy many thanks
@Johnbuildsiconic3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, I’ve haven’t used the lathe for turning in some time. I finished all my mast over a year ago. But I agree with your comment, and I think that would increase the length by a couple of inches
@chrisbalchin14813 жыл бұрын
I have to say John, your masts on this Victory are a work of art. You make it seem so easy. I got a Bounty as a gift from my family around 15 to 20 years ago. I haven't built it because I thought the masts would be too difficult and I couldn't do them justice. I now know that I can do a bearable job after seeing how you craft yours. Building them with your plans on camera was so educational. Many thanks John!

Hi John, and thank you for all your tutorials on the HMS Victory, they have been a blessing. May I ask how did you use the lathe on the masts please? The problem is that the chuck max. diameter opens to 6mm and masts are 12mm.
@Johnbuildsiconic4 жыл бұрын
Hi Eldrin, I drill a 6mm hole in the end of a 12mm mast. And glue in a 6mm dowel that fits the Chuck. Hope this helps

So is there a specific reason as to why you used a separate wooden board as opposed to buying a bar of extruded aluminum t-slot that was the length you wanted?
@Johnbuildsiconic4 жыл бұрын
Hi, no there wasn’t I specific reason I used wood. YI just wanted to use the mini lathe that day. And I didn’t want to be waiting for the aluminium t-slot. material to be delivered. I’ve been using the lathe for over 6months now. Without any issues
