John, Awesome station. About a hundred years ago when I was doing laminate work instead of strips of wood to hold it off the sub substrate I used an extension cord. 50' usually worked and was long enough, you just looped it up and down and then when you were putting it together start pulling the cord. Ta da. I went into using that because I had a chip of wood fall off in the middle of the sheet and I don't have to tell you how hard it was to get out. I was born in the Jurassic era, 1946. You do some very nice work and it's enjoyable to watch you. Keep it up.

Very nice build concept and execution, as well. That offset base is the shizznit for laminate trimming. I have one for my ancient Porter Cable trimmer. One item you might want to consider if you do more laminate is a "no file" trim bit. When trimming the top surface of the laminate (sides already on), you can dial this bit in so there is ZERO lippage of the top sheet overhanging the sides. The bit gets gradually larger the deeper it is set. The regular "flush trim" bits with bearings can be a bit off, and you end up with a slight gouge (on face of the side piece) if the bearing is slightly undersized, or a small lip if the bearing is a bit oversized. This small lip is just big enough to catch something and maybe cause a chip. The other thing about the no file bit is it has a slight chamfer built in. The depth adjustment is CRITICAL, but after testing on a scrap, you can cruise through a bunch of pieces and filing is almost non-existent.
@JohnBuildsIt4 жыл бұрын
Yea I’ve seen those! Definitely will grab one next time
@wessunde2801 Жыл бұрын
A 45° chamfer bit works good too. Dial in the cut to just a hair more than the thickness of the laminate, & it gives a nice finished edge.

John, excellent build and really good video! I’m finally putting my miter station together but mine’s gonna be a bit of a hybrid. I’m starting off with a few base cabinets from Lowe’s. I plan to take off the doors and then fill them with DIY full extension drawers. Yours is really awesome. Also, your instructions and methods are really good. I just subscribed to your channel. I like the Delta Cruiser Mitersaw. Like you, I just wasn’t willing to give up the space required by most sliding compound miter saw‘s. I think the Festool Kapex was the first brand out there with a small footprint. They use the forward facing sliders. Even though I have a number of Festool items, I couldn’t justify $1400 for a miter saw. Next came Bosch with their knuckle system and it appears that Delta has used some ideas from that system. But I agree with you - being able to back your miter saw up completely to the wall is great. I suspect we’re going to see more and more SCMS that either use one system or the other. Keep up the great work and I’ll be looking for your upcoming videos.
@JohnBuildsIt4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yea my other miter saw with the sliders in the back is so big I literally wouldn’t have been able to use that preexisting bank of cabinets on the left. The fence of the saw was right at the edge of the front of the countertop, and they’re big cabinets to begin with. Pretty crazy! Really loving the Cruzer so far
