Great video! Very informative! I've found that if you slip the clutch, Which is the belt, your belt won't last very long, So either fully engaged it or let go of it entirely, holding light tension on the drive control handle causes the engine pully to burn up the belt. So when trimming around bushes and such, Don't even use the self propelled handle, Just manually push and pull the mower where it needs to go. Reserve the self propelled lever for long stretches of mowing and it will make your belts last much longer.

I have the exact same mower bought in May 2016. I use it 2-3 hours per week 4.5 months of the year. I just changed the blade for the first time today and it had never been sharpened. The blade looked in great shape compared to the new one but obviously not as sharp. I also changed the spark plug for the first time and it did not look too bad. Some carbon build up but nothing excessive. So I have had this mower for 5 years and all I have done is change the oil each season and clean the air filter a few times. I read lots of reviews online saying this lawn mower is junk but my experience is otherwise. I clean the underside good after every use too. I found the water connection to be useless for cleaning it. My blade adapter looked good and the pulleys too as well as the belt. My next project will be to change all the pulleys and the belt (hopefully good for a while yet) so this video will be useful then. As you pointed out there’s no drain plug on that Honda engine. You have to drain and fill through the dipstick port.

Same, bought it at Marsh’s in GFW and had it for 4-5 years now, not a hitch. They seem to have started using their own brand of engine now not the Honda one on the newer ones from what I’ve seen.

I have this same mower as a craftsman and it has a Briggs and Stratton engine. No oil drain plug so I drain it out the fill tube. Regarding those three pullies, as long as the plastic is ok it's wise to check the condition of their bearings. I pop off the bearing seal caps and clean them with brake fluid and compressed air. Then repack with high temp bearing lube and reinstall the seal caps. Otherwise they are guaranteed to seize up sooner or later.

Thank you for that video. I did the belt replacement already and could not figure out why the drive was not working correctly. I compared it with the old belt and it appeared to be similar. Even had contacted Husqvarna USA and they insisted I bought the correct belt. Well, the earlier models of this mower use a 21" and the later I guess use a 22". That is my problem. While it has a lot of steps, the belt do last a very long time plus I didn't find it complicated. Other than that the mower has been holding up well for over 12 years. And yes, it is amazing how much junk gets in the front area. Anyway, thanks again, great walk through video.

What a head ache man. I found your video after an hour after I started the tedious process and removing the belt. Four hours later, a trip to Lowe’s, a lunch break and me getting frustrated with my boys, we are done. As for the design it’s a strong build, but as for the engineering of the back end I truly don’t think they could’ve made it any harder to work on. Drop’n the back end and swapping out the rear end of a 78 Chevy is a lot easier. But all in all saved me a $200+ small engine mechanic bill. Thank you Sir… I would add it was difficult to see that tension spring on the video. I figured it out, had forgotten due to my frustration. All is well!

Only problem came with the BBC ( Blade Break Clutch ), watch carefully when disassemble the BBC assembly, very different from video. Again a very informative video, oh yes it is a pain in the BUT to do but when all is said and done it’s worth the effort.

👍I replaced my neighbors and my own belt along w/ removing pulleys and such to clean and lube. It amazes me how time consuming and moderately difficult the engineer designed this mower just to replace the belt. Crazy!! Anyway, looked this job up afterwards just to see if I was going at it the wrong way. I wasn’t. Just crazy engineering! As far as the oil change, I just tip mine over (muffler to ground, carb up) to dump old oil. Thx. (SUBd)

Great video , believe it or not I am doing the same thing to an older Husq. 2014 I think. It’s in very bad. Condition , the owner didn’t take care of it , instead he give it to me. So I’m restoring it to not perfect conditions but a lot better than it was. Everything was taken completely apart inside and out , and I’m in the process of rebuilding the topside of the motor. That was a great idea about the wheels , going to try that out in just a min. Thanks reach out if you have any other ideas like that.

Great video and tutorial! This is a perfect video for step-by-step in-depth maintenance and cleaning, but I did want to note that taking the engine off to change the oil is not necessary. With a small engine like the one on this push mower you simply need to tip it over and drain it from the fill spout. This will save you a couple of hours of work and will maintain the engine if you do it seasonally.

My Husqvarna AWD has a Briggs and Stratton engine, not Honda, everything else seems to be the same as yours. The cable to engage the wheels broke so I will replace that cable. When I tilted the machine forward, lifting the back wheels up to investigate, the very dirty engine oil saturated the air filter so I will replace the air filter, the engine oil, the spark plug and either grind the blade or replace as you did. Thank you for showing me the way.

This video was perfect for me. The first time I turned over my mower it looked way too complex for me to work on, but you broke it down and made it easy to understand. This model and most newer self propelled lawn mowers simply drain through the fill port. Due to the added drive train parts covering up access to any drain plugs and the dirty environment under there causing corrosion. Making any removal difficult if not impossible. It does seem to be easier since you just tilt it over and pour it into a pan. Instead of trying to support it level in the air and try to remove the stuck plug. Then not forgetting to re install the plug.

You also should hang your mower blade on a nail through center hole on the blade, to check for balance. The blade will lay horizontal if balanced. It is pretty important to do this after grinding, what ever side of the blade wants to go to the bottom, it is the one you grind more off of.

I just got one of these, barely used, for a C note. Glad I decided to watch all the videos first; this is the most unnecessarily complicated lawnmower design I've ever seen. And no way to drain oil, for an oil change. That's flippin' nuts. I'm surprised it doesn't have half a dozen computer controls. Oops -- didn't mean to give 'em any ideas.

None of the newer lawn mower engines have oil plug drains you either have to tip it on its side and drain through the dipstick or use a small vacuum pump and hose and suck the oil out of the dipstick it doesn't matter what brand mower or engine you buy they are all the same now.

Gawd, that's truly pathetic. I know this is a sign that I'm getting old -- but dammit, things really were better when I was young.

To drain the oil I just warm up the engine and then tilt the whole mower on its side. Not sure if that's bad but it's been working so far.

I have the same model and I just replaced the carburetor and replaced the oil and added fresh gas and the mower turns on and stays on but it’s super loud. I still managed to cut the yard but it seemed extremely loud to me. Any reason why it would be that loud? Towards the end of my cut it did sound like it was dying like when you run out of gas and then just stopped.

Was it engine noise or muffler noise?

I really like this video . He completely tears it down and you can learn a lot from that. But he must not have the owners manual because it is not necessary to do a lot of this to change out the drive belt. He even took the motor off, wow. When all else fails read the manual. Maybe he did not have access to one.

Sir, I have the hu800hw rear wheel drive model but I think principles are the same. I absolutely cannot locate any hole or notch to fasten the right side of the spring to, left side Crystal clear. Does it attach to the belt guard? Same hole as the cable? Put everything back together and self propelled worked 10 min before belt came off transmission, stayed on blade pulley. Belt appears to the exact size. Any help appreciated. Thx

Mine attached to the housing. Right in the corner next to the spring assembly. A real pain in the rear to put back on.
