Is there a way to drain the oil from a Husqvarna 775 from the bottom of the mower that will get more of the sludge out, rather than tipping it sideways to drain the oil?

I should have watched this before cleaning the carburetor twice, doing the gas cap vent test, spark plug gap ext. My mower would periodically start but peter out after a few seconds. This cable was out of adjustment by a 1/16 of an inch ( right at the run/stop sweet spot). " a halfa inch at home isn't that bigga deal"!😆

@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Yard Machines 21" Push Mower - 11A-B0BL700 ..start at first pull....can't stop . kill switch is not working..how to fix?
@callbackdons
@callbackdons 4 жыл бұрын
Summary: The cable ends screw in/out, and by screwing both ends out a little bit (1/4 inch or so) you can lengthen the cable's outer sheath, which effectively shortens the usable portion of the cable, increasing the range of motion available to the kill switch actuator. Two things not mentioned: 1) On my mower (Murray 21"), the ends screw all the way off at about a half inch. 2) These dudes can be pretty tight. I needed to use pliers at first to get the initial twists, after that I could use my fingers. Really appreciate the video! This solved my problem and saved me from doing something weird like wiring up a manual switch in place of my kill switch!

I just thanked you a million times; however, I was kinda lucky to stumble across this video. I noticed not having mush throw in the cable while cleaning the carburetor and at a last ditch effort looked for dead man cable not having much throw. What would be incredibly nice is a trouble shooting guide for mowers that run for short amount of time and shut off. This guide could link to each of your videos showing how to resolve the issue. Thanks a million again

Steve, the heavy spring is the problem. My chain link fence is loaded with all the bail handles I've taken as trophies, along with a bucket of the springs. The cables wear out, kink up and otherwise become non functional. Cut them off with nips, fashion a simple shutoff for the kill switch or spend the bucks for an electrical springloaded SP/ST switch and screw the rotor brake. I used to remove the brake, now I find that just letting it flop around as it only cleans off the face of the rotor ensuring clean magnetic flow to the coil with virtually no drag when it touches and if it does need to be removed, cut it away with a metal cutting wheel, in place, as it can be accessed directly from above or you can remove the bolt and do it in a vise. That monster spring that B&S uses is way too strong. They sell more cables because of this. If and when the cable kinks, I have used your method to buy more time but the inside run of the cable is wearing out anyway and hand straightening, then locking it down with zip ties and electrical tape and lubing the crap out of them might buy a bit more time. Customers hate when you tell them it's twelve to fourteen bucks for a new cable. They brighten up when you fix it with some "chewing gum and baling wire" as you really only need the kill switch to work. The brake on the rotor is for safety ( OSHA required for the manufacturer, so check with your risk manager if you should do this as a repair "professional" or if you are the owner of the machine, there I are no restrictions) so you have to remind them they have to keep their toes away from the deck when they reach down to kill the engine. The keeping it simple principle applies here. Especially with older mowers that turn into beaters anyway.

Steve is just fantastic and perhaps the best small engine mechanic I have ever watched and, I have spent many many hours watching small engine mechanics. But what's really happening is he is adjusting the connection points on the cable through the outer plastic shield. And as a result it has the effect of shortening the steel cable. In the past, I simply used zip ties and would attach the cable to the handle to make sure that it worked properly. Of course steve's idea is far superior. But as the cable continues to wear, Which most people mistakingly call stretch, Eventually there will not be enough adjustment on the outer plastic cable screw points to compensate. At that point you will need to resort to plastic zip Ties to attach the cable to the handle. Or simply spend ten dollars and replace the cable. Thanks again steve, you're the best! 👍👍👍

And if the ends on your cable are fastened or molded securely and won't screw off, then get a short 3/8 diameter, half inch long bolt, nut, and two flat washers. Remove the cable end by the motor and wrap the cable around the bolt, between the 2 washers, two times and while pulling the cable tight, just tighten the nut on the bolt squeezing the cable between the washers. Try it and if you need it longer or shorter, just change the amount of wraps around the bolt. Saves buying a new cable and doesn't hurt the cable like tying a knot will do. Another method is to bend the cable into a little loop and push the loop through a 1/2 inch nut. When the eye of the loop pops through the nut, slip a short small screw through the loops eye and pull the cable tight. The screw will keep the cable from pulling back through the hole in the nut and your cable is now shortened. Use a larger size nut if you need to shorten it more or smaller nut if you need the cable a little longer. Hope these alternative methods help if your cable ends are glued tight like mine were. Good day! Jpol.

Your repairs/adjustments are always the best, most are a 1 beer project. I have a question that may be a 3+ beer project. All the new mowers have a fixed carburetor. This is ok, but there are times I like to run the mower slower due to dusty conditions, pine cone ejection, etc. You get the point. Is there anyway to install a throttle on this type carb ?

Don't normally comment on videos, but you are the hero for the day! I had replaced the control (brake) cable awhile back but it always seemed to barely have any movement. It worked for awhile but recently stopped. Tried the conventional stuff like cleaning carb (looked good) and plug and so on, just it would not start! Didn't realize the cable was adjustable, thought it was just a wrong chinese part replacement I bought. Loosened both ends and wow it started right up! The only bad part was it wants to pull that handle mount out but nothing a few strategic zip ties to keep it from pulling out didn't fix. Thanks for the video!

I know this is an older video but it saved my Husqvarna LC221A today! After ordering and installing two “factory correct” drive belts that didn’t fit 🤬 I saw this video and decided to try it on the drive cable for my AWD Husqvarna and it solved my problem, wish I had tried this from the git-go! Beware of non OEM belts that claim to be the correct size if your mower uses a custom belt that’s in between standard sizes, they usually won’t fit or work right and sellers on eBay and Amazon are often clueless!! Thanks Steve-O!!

Steve, thank you for this information. I have been trying to get my mower started for a few weeks....I had changed / cleaned several things attempting to get it running again. I was about to give up and take it into a repair shop but I found your site by accident and tried what you suggested and it worked. Thank you for saving me some money to apply to some other things that need to be fixed.

My troybilt cable brake broke (awful sentence structure) two years ago and I bored a hole in the bracket and used micro U bolt to repair. When that corrodes promise I will buy from your link. Confirmed you have my cable. Great video and you also nailed the one beer time line. Working on small engines is way more fun when you drink! Cheers Steve

Very timely Steve. I "rigged one up" for a cheap $40 mower today. It is a mower for a young man starting out. I used the bracket that is adjustable that goes onto the handle. I would love to find another 10. It is for the cable that has the clip in at both ends. Engine and handle bare have the same end.

Huge thanks for this video and this super easy tip! And to all the other chicks out there like me, you can do this! Was messing around with the carburetor for a long time (plus new gas cap, new spark plug) and was about to give up and take it in ... And then I saw your video!!! I was able to adjust the cable and I just couldn't believe it when it started with a single pull! I probably do need to buy a new cable because it's really stretched out, but it's such a relief to pinpoint the problem and fix it on my own. I learned so much in the process! Many thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I have been fighting this for years. Every time I start my mower, I close the bale, then have to tug the brake cable sideways. That pulls it enough to let the mower start. Never was satisfied with the solution and shied away from the "knot". I expect the Steve solution will be put in place in the next 10 minutes. Thanks, I offer my humble thanks and appreciation!

So nice to see someone else doing what I have been doing for many a many years. Nice job Steve. Sometimes you can use a throttle cable and cut the solder formed ends off original cable and solder to the new cable and you are up and running in fifteen minutes max. Not counting going to either a local mower shop or close big box stores lawn and garden section in season. Good day.
