I grew up during the time when Phil Collins was only known as the drummer and backing vocalist in my favourite band. When Peter Gabriel left Genesis, and Phil stepped up as lead singer my friends and I were all rooting for him, (and the band), to continue with what I still think of as ground-breaking work. How anyone could take offence at one of the best drummers, singers, brilliant arranger/contributor, talented song writer and all-round good guy, is beyond me.

When you become part of the cultural fabric you get a massive response. Some of it will be negative. He does his millions of fans a disservice by giving so much energy in the direction of the negative. Saying "I'm hated because I'm so successful", is ridiculous. If you're massively successful like Phil, you are getting plenty of love but choosing to ignore it. Stop moaning Phil you were the drummer in the same band as Peter Gabriel. Isn't that enough ffs?

He was short, affable, normal looking (not sexy), didn’t have groupies, didn’t do drugs, didn’t cheat on his wife and didn’t trash hotel rooms. He also made mainstream commercial Pop that made the masses happy. And that made some of his peers (I’m looking at you Noel Gallagher), critics and music snobs jealous and nasty of him and his success. No matter though. He’s still a highly talented drummer, amazing singer/songwriter/producer and his dozens of hits, Grammy’s, sold out concerts, multi-platinum albums and exceptional career speak for itself.

Patrick Bateman: Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your a**hole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

@@asciishallreceive3871 It's great! In the late 90s, Phil played big band arrangements of solo and Genesis songs. He doesn't read music and had to memorize the complex parts! Check out Phil's fiery drumming on this version of Los Endos (with Latin breakdown!): kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIWYhqaipcyDi6M There's also a live album ("A Hot Night In Paris") and a documentary about the project on KZbin.

@@asciishallreceive3871 Look up Phil Collins Big Band, it was an amazing labor of love instrumental project he did in the late 90s, rearranging his songs and some Genesis classics. It was inspiring to see him take on a musical challenge - he doesn't read music and had to memorize the drum parts to lead the band!

Phil Collins a musical hero. He has invented the gated reverb snare sound that was the foundation of countless tracks in the 80s and definitely is my favourite snare and tom sound of all time. Plus, he has created THAT drumfill. That alone makes him a legend. Plus, he has a truly unique voice and is a fantastic singer.

The gated snare drum was Hugh Padgam I think.

I think Phil Collins has been reading too much trash on the internet. That's a common problem for people of his vintage, especially artists in the twilight of their careers. Recommendation: Don't go down that rabbit-hole, Phil. It's an uneducated, ill-informed cesspool of trolls, idiots and wannabees. You are one of the greats at your craft. Don't pay attention or give credit to the rubbish.

An absolute down to earth wonderful charming chap whom i would LOVE to just sit down somewhere and talking about all kinds of things for hours. He really is such a real british bloke who had his fair share of personal dramas and I never hated him. Never will. I really comes across as someone you'd love to be friends with.

Phil Collins is awesome. I wish we heard more from him. The 80's and 90's wouldn't have been the same without him.

I am from Zimbabwe. Loved this but was shocked to hear that there are people who have attacked Phil. Me, my brothers and friends loved and still love Phil Collins. We lived on his music. The high light was the album “ But Seriously”… We love you Phil!

Phil has a musical legacy to be proud of. I wouldn't have admitted it, 40 years ago, but even the soppy ballads were pretty damn good.

The eighties was the Pinnacle of pop music, and Phil was a notable portion of that. I grew up during the seventies and eighties and music now is not near as good. Thanks for all the great songs and music Phil.

Always liked Phil Collins. Monster talent and a guy that never took himself too seriously, but took his music seriously. Nice to hear him open up where many others in his industry hide! His sensitivity is admirable!
