John Gibbons is a registered Osteopath, Lecturer and Multi-published Author and is demonstrating how to test the reflexes of the lower limb. John shows you how to test nerve root level of the adductors (obturator nerve through L3 reflex), patella tendon (femoral nerve through L4 reflex), semitendinosus (tibial / sciatic nerve of L5 reflex) and Achilles / plantar (tibial nerve of sciatic through S1 reflex) and a normal response is classified as 2++. Any reduced hypo-reflex (1+) or increased hyper-reflex (3+++) with Clonus and Babinski positive as might indicate some form of upper motor neurone lesion like Multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord tumour or brain injury. Any altered reflex will need further investigation as a possibility of disc or neural pathology. These techniques and more is taught on the Neurological Master-Class at the University of Oxford.

I don't have any flexibility on my left foot, and i have numbness on my left side. Could be a s1 root damage??

S1 will give you weakness pointing toes (plantar flexion) and turning your foot outwards (eversion) rather than lack of flexibility - regards JG

IMPRESSION: 1. L5-S1 intervertebral disc narrowing and spondylosis. 2. Lower lumbar facet joint degeneration. This impression note was on my x ray. How bad is this and could be the reason for my not flexibility on my left foot?

I fell sitting down and fractured my left ankle last year and I have had two surgeries on my ankle, one for arthrodesis and another for ligament repair and my foot still cannot walk on tiptoe and on my heels.
