I think one of the main reasons I follow this channel and became a Patreon is because it’s all about the music. Many people in this “hobby” hear the music to LISTEN to the equipment. But for some, they hear the equipment to LISTEN to the music. I’m one of those. I want the equipment to bring me closer to the musical experience - to thrill me to get dancing around the living room, to bring me to tears, to absorb me in awe…that’s what good equipment does…..oh, and I love me some Tom Waits. What I love about these videos is that John always takes a moment to show us some new album that’s hanging around the living room and that’s a subtle reminder about what this is all about for him and for many others.❤ There are many audio review channels out there on KZbin but not many really mention music perhaps for fear of alienating those with different tastes. John has the balls to invite us to hear what he’s into. And it’s pretty eclectic at that….(sorry for mentioning John’s balls) ….😂

John, thank you for doing this video. I often wonder what kind of sounds I can listen to when you do your videos and I like something in the background. Or in the interstitials. You going through a list of music that may or may not be to my liking is a great place to start to find new music on a level that we can agree is at least well produced, or makes your head and heart happy. Also appreciate that you put everything in the description so that I didn't have to go back through the video to write it down myself. Keep up the great work, and stay on the road to better health. I'm sure a lot of people connect with you on that level as well.

10:50 - I hate that too! One of my biggest pet peeves is when IDM artists (or any electronic producers, really) flood their records with guest vocalists. There are rare instances where it works if they're working within more traditional Pop structures, or if the vocals are more like harmonies used to build texture, but if given the choice, I'd 100% always opt for electronic music without vocals (unless it's a sample).

You might be interested in checking out John DeVore's channel here on KZbin. He is the creator of DeVore Fidelity loudspeakers and in addition to sometimes talking gear, he also does more generalized (or more specific) talks about the industry at large and also does the occasional album reviews with some neat insight. Well produced stuff and he's a very down to earth fellow.

Really appreciate these deeper dives in to the music. Have discovered many gems this way that a personalized streaming algorithm probably wouldn't have recommended. Regarding Bandcamp, I've noticed recently that all of my vinyl purchases from the platform now have free digital downloads associated with them. I don't know if this is a new feature or if they've been there all along. Anyway, pretty happy with this as it provides the best of both worlds, a physical format and a lossless digital backup that can be streamed locally when I'm feeling too lazy to flip a record.

Two of my all-time favorite albums are The The's Mind Bomb and Dusk. Those two were in heavy rotation in my university days. If CDs wore out like vinyl I'd be on my 4th or 5th copy of Dusk and Mind Bomb. And now, after the kids go to bed. I sit in my living room, dim the lights, have a nice beer, and listen to those two on my headphones and just really enjoy them every time.

I totally agree about the music being the most important part of the equation. It so refreshing listening to you talk about music as I too love electronic music (Alva Noto, Aphex Twin etc.) and when I was buying Hi-Fi mags the music they would talk about was boring middle of the road stuff. And now you've mentioned Tom Waits as well, who's another of my favourites, great stuff. More videos about the music please!

I recently moved near a small village on the south coast in east sussex. When I first went into a small antique shop in the village my jaw fell open as it holds many many hundreds of LPs, run by a guy who runs a web site. Needless to say I’ve since spent untold hours in there spending a shed load of lolly.
