That's funny. :) Still, while I'm not U fan, I have lost jobs before. Though I have no personal opinion on Harlan, I would feel bad if he lost his job over a single moment not well thought through. True, it happens, and true, he really should have known better, but unemployment isn't something I'd wish on most people. Still, he was good enough to accept the consequences, so I give him props for that. Thing is, if his comments were enough to get the U kicked out of the Big 12, that'd represent a large potential loss of revenue and clout for the school. At that point, the U might just ask Harlan to move on; and I wouldn't blame them.

I’m a long time Utah fan, but enjoy watching all football. Let’s say I have a biased view of who I want to win. However I have an open mind and unbiased perspective of on field or on court calls and plays. I can say unequivocally that if roles were reversed that my Utah friends would go to their deaths saying that the call of holding was definitely a correct and necessary call and would swear that it had been going on the whole game. The fact is it was a good call. We, the Utes, couldn’t find a way to score in the second half. Our coaches were so conservative in playing not to lose rather than playing to win. Our last possession if we even get a first down with the ball at midfield we can run the clock out. We got a break in the first half with the facemask that wasn’t one. It removed a sack of a huge loss and gave us a positive 15 yards and a first down and created an opportunity for us to get a touchdown. We would have had to punt. Look at the final stats. Our mistakes hurt us. After the holding call, BYU made big plays and we couldn’t stop them from getting into position to score. They kicked a pressure packed 44 yard field goal as the clock was running out. They earned the win. We happily took the calls that went our way. Fact is our coaches decisions in previous games that took pretty sure points off the table to gamble for more points which in the end cost our Utah team at least two wins. That’s the way the cookie crumbles. Sometimes your decisions bring you wins and sometimes it doesn’t. Accept your mistakes. Look at the final game stats. BYU made plays in the end to win a game that was almost completely even in the stats, except We lost special teams and turnovers. There you have it. It wasn’t calls unless we as Utah fans think that we are entitled to only have all calls go our way and that our players never make mistakes to be penalized for. We need to get over ourselves. Mark Harlan needs to put the pacifier in and shut his pie hole. Be grateful the Big12 accepted us into the conference. Just play football the way we should have been. It’s like we were so full of ourselves because we were picked as the sure thing to win the league and that the league was responsible to escort us throughout the year to be king of the Big12. However now we are getting a humility check. Too bad for Isaac Wilson. A true freshman having to be thrown into taking the reins of a team but knowing Rising was the guy and so shared snaps in practice. Week by week like Bryson Barnes last year in seeing if Cam Rising would play or not. Cam has held the team hostage. We need to play with urgency and finish strong so the players can play in a bowl game.
@nathaneyring48582 күн бұрын
I'm a BYU fan and love your perspective. Being honest on my side though, had I been in the Utes' shoes I would have been very frustrated by the call. I've only seen one angle in slow-mo personally that makes me really feel it was holding, which I searched for that to prove myself right as a BYU fan and I wouldn't have cared to look had it gone against me like that. I have to give the Utes credit too for coming to play as hard as they did. All in all though, while there is a sadistic part of me that enjoys seeing the Utes do poorly, in reality I hope that in the coming years BYU and Utah can meet with both vying for the conference championship. Utah has proven in recent years they can do it, and I can only hope that this year for BYU is not just an anomaly!

JOHN, This article is my response to Ute fans. I think you will like it... Reality checks. There is a reason fans cannot be trusted with objective reality. Passion and emotion make for bad chemistry. So how about a reality check this morning. 1. The Big12 welcomed you including the BYU Administration that lobbied for you over other worthy candidate institutions. 2. Part of being in a conference is accepting responsibility for civility within that league. 3. Your AD, Mark Harlan embarrassed Utah Both the University and the State last night. Now let's discuss the game. Utah played their butts off. Having said that the game did not come down to one blown incorrect face mask penalty that aided your first TD, nor did it come down to a holding call that left BYU 80 yards of field to go. With regard to the former, the officiating crew admitted in a bang-bang play they got it wrong. Error benefitted Utah. As for the hold, it was clear and obvious. The Ute CB actually nearly dragged BYU's Receiver off his feet and though he regained his balance the flag was already thrown. Film from various end zone angles show the official looking right at that play and yanking his yellow hankie. He made a correct call. Furthermore, Utah secondary had been warned several times throughout the game by the officials that they were skirting the edge of permissable contact. They had been told to knock it off. Now in the end it was NOT a phantom call, and so the next thing some fans would say in both cases if this were reversed and benefitted Utah is the false notion... ... "You can't make that call at that moment." Really? But the law doesn't change just because the game is nearly over does it? Let's say you jump out of an airplane and you free fall 9,000 feet adhearing to the law of gravity. At 1000 feet you pull the rip chord. But your chute does not open and as you realize plummeting to your death you cannot say, "Wait, you can't make that call, I want a do over." Natural laws are given to us to teach us that a law is applicable from beginning to end. People saying the official should have let the obvious hold go are pretending there is a grace period at the end of games when the law no longer applies. That's ridiculous. Blaming the officials for being the ground rising up to meet the plummeting body is not a worthy argument. The Utes did not lose the game on that play. They lost because BYU drove the length of the field and kicked 3 trough the uprights with 4 seconds left on the clock. As badly as BYU played much of the night, it played better defense than Utah and BYU's Special Teams put 16 of the 22 points necessary to win on the scoreboard. Whine all you want and this is a lesson for BYU fans as well. You do not always get do-overs. But the laws of the game apply all the time, from the jump, to the ground. It's just that in football, officials do not always see every foul or make a correct call. They did in this case. By the way Ute Fans, the officials huddled. I thought they might call the penalty off but the back judge and boundary officials confirmed the call. That was a good call, rules of the game. You have to live with it. BYU won the game. Mark Harlan, Utah Athletic Director, disgraced the University and the College Football Playoff Committee. He should be expelled from the latter and asked to resign by the former. L. E. it's not a low end program. just crappy coaching decisions this year. playing wilson instead of rose probably costed them 2 wins. playing rising while he was injured costed them a game. QB Rose appears to be much better than wilson. the utah offensive line is their weakness. and having a QB that can run like rose would have completely changed their offense for the better (the offensive playbook would have expanded significantly. it will be interesting to see if they win the rest of their games. i would expect them to.....if they play the rest of their games as good as they did against BYU, i think they will win them all. i think rose will only get better with each game. OC ludwig got fired in part because the offense was stagnant and their offense was so predictible. that was partly wilson's fault as he isn't as versatile as rose. wilson's longball accuracy is not very good. he's accurate up to about 20 yards. so when wilson can't run, and he isn't accurate passed 20 yards, the offense becomes very predictible.

Utah really stepped up and played well. The D Line especially was formidable. I thought BYU was going to be mowed down after a while. But somehow BYUs defense kicked in through the whole second half and held. BYU offense made plays and scored, to keep it close and nearly tied on a missed 2 point conversion. The holding call was legit; timing should never be the issue-if it’s a penalty, call it that way whether beginning or end. BYU still had to go 50 yards in a minute with only one timeout to get in field goal position and then get it through the uprights. But then I read the words next day from UT AD. It’s no surprise tensions were high. As a long time BYU fan I know Utah’s main motivation to defeat BYU this year is to destroy BYU for living Utah’s dream season. (“If I can’t have it, no one can!” They had nothing to gain except bragging rights against locals if they won this game since their season record is what BYU’s record usually is. Utah wasn’t going anywhere big this year regardless of outcome. I always cheered for Utah when they were good for representing our state in the past. I’ve been okay losing many times to Utah in the holy war games since not only is it just a game, but because it’s very fun when we occasionally win since they go absolutely nuts. Utah fans began throwing stuff after the game. The cheer cheer coach for BYU was hit by a water bottle and lost consciousness. Police are trying to find who it was so they can be charged. That's not what competition is for.

Many of us were not excited to have Utah (or any Pac12 schools) in the conference. They burned the pac to the ground, and this kind of behavior is exactly what we warned everyone about. Booting them out would not be a terrible thing.

Miami's loss certainly hurt ACC's chances. UofL was almost a spoiler, having only lost by a TD to Miami. But they, UofL, definitely spoiled Clemson. BYU definitely had a complaint about a phantom facemask which lead to a Utah touchdown, they changed the dynamic of the rest of the game. Same as the soft holding call against Utah.

The hold penalty, whether it was or wasn’t a penalty, didn’t cost Utah the game. They didn’t stop them after the penalty because BYU still needed to move the ball downfield to get into field goal range and Utah didn’t stop them from gaining those yards. Also Utah should have scored points in the second half of the game and not have put themselves in that situation. Utah has no right to complain and blame the Big 12. Utah is just embarrassed because they thought they were elite and they were going to own the Big 12 and that didn’t happen. Utah needs to realize that they are not better than any of the other Big 12 teams and they need to be thankful that they were given the invite to join this conference, otherwise go back to the PAC 12.

In the games against OSU and Utah, BYU overcame 99.9% chance of loss in the final 2 minutes of both games. That's literally a cumulative 1 in a million odds. Team of destiny? We'll see...

Mark Harlan was unprofessional, plain and simple. He had no business making his way to the microphone and using his position to give what was essentially a fan reaction. It's one thing if a coach says something in the heat of the moment when they are expected to talk to the press right after the game ends. No one expects the AD to be in front of the mic after every game.

Remember the pick play Tulane ran against K-State? Everyone wants to interpret the rules to suit their own narrative. Utah is getting their magic hineys spanked and they aren’t taking it well.

A great weekend of Big XII football? A contradiction is terms. Poor officiating in the Big XII football has long been a problem. It was one of the reasons that A&M and Mizzou fled to the SEC.

The U coach and AD should re-review the various angles of “the call” and be objective! Then, come out publicly and admit it was a legit call…then, offer an apology! It would go a long way to smooth the waters and show some serious CLASS! Utah has always had a very unhealthy reputation…time to reverse course!

Thank You for breaking down the facemask call as well….wait what facemask?? There was a facemask call? Wait it led to Utah touchdown. Because Utah executed plays after the no facemask call. Then BYU executed after a legit defensive holding call and won the game. Imagine that???
@pharman4001Күн бұрын
To me it's not whether if this is holding or not, it's "how have they been calling this all game". If they have been letting it go, they should have never called it. If they have been calling a tight game, you throw the flag.

i just feel bad utah didn't start rose as QB until now. I mean i feel bad for the players. the utah coaches have made plenty of mistakes hurting the team's ability to win this season. playing rising when he was injured costed them a game. playing wilson as qb instead of rose probably costed them one or two wins. pretty poor coaching decisions made this year. why would they not go with ROSE instead of WILSON as QB when the utah offensive line is their clear weakness. having a QB that can run would negate some of that weakness.

BYU would definitely beat Boise State. Big 12 is a step up, as Utah found out this year.

An hour and a half on this??? I can tell you the answer. It’s no. Utah just mad because they got caught holding a reciever that was burning their db. If they actually just wouldn’t have held him, he might not have caught the ball and it would’ve likely been over. They mad because BYU methodically moved the ball down the field to get in perfect FG position. Utah just needs to stop whining and realize they let that game slip. They couldn’t score in the second half cause our defense easily adjusted to their offense.

You want to pick through bogus calls that affected the game look no further than the bogus/phantom facemask call that negated a drive killing sack in the 2nd quarter and extended a drive for Utah that resulted in a TD. Get that call right and Utah doesn’t get that TD and the final outcome of the game is fundamentally different, the hold call at the end is inconsequential.

They definitely stole a win from Utah. Byu got 6 tries to get 1st down. I'm not a BYU fan or a Utah fan but I watched the game and was astounded by how unfair that last drive was. It reminded me of Chiefs games and the one sided officiating.

Solution: score enough points so ONE PLAY or ONE CALL doesn't make a difference. Refuse to do that and suffer whatever fate occurs... score more points! Call better plays! Develop better player skills. Waste time doing THAT instead of whining for the next diaper change.

Let's conveniently forget about the B.S. Facemask call & very questionable roughing the passer call in the first half that set up a T.D. for the Utes before halftime. A HOLD is a HOLD. Whether it is on play 1 or play 101 - It was a HOLD - Maybe STOP raping receivers & you will not be called for holding. You still gave up a 95-Yard TD drive beforehand & allowed BYU to go downfield on you after you HELD & got called for it.

But really...the boosters are going to pay the fine, whether its $40,000 or $40,000,000 - a better penalty would be to do something like ban the AD from the next 3 games.
@alextemus2 күн бұрын
That wasn't the most egregious holding penalty I've ever seen, but it was still a clear penalty. It didn't guarantee the game, BYU still had to drive the field. The only honest way to look at it is BYU got shafted by the refs in this game and the only reason Utah even had a chance to be close was because Utah needed momentum desparately and the refs gave it to them in the form of throwing out a 10 yard sack and giving a 15 yard facemask, followed by a really soft roughing the passer.

How can a call of an obvious penalty be considered the refs stealing it for BYU. IT WAS A PENALTY AND THEY CALLED IT RIGHT. Ignoring a penalty and allowing Utah to win because of a no-call, that would be stealing it! It's not the ref's fault that Utah is a bunch of whiners.
@jasonkeuma19862 сағат бұрын
It wasn’t stolen. The bad call timing really hurt Utah for 10 yards. The phantom face mask cost byu 25 yards. But, Utah not stoping BYU FOR the next 50 yards is their own fault.
