I think this was a wonderfully choreographed exhibition of storytelling. Kudos to the director, and I'm sure Chrissy is very proud of John for this song. You can see the clear divide in the beginning, and of course, Chance's soulful vocals bringing that "Just-us (justice) play on words could not have been a better ingredient for that soul food soufflé. In the end, you can see the ideal world and outcome from where we are now, however, it is revealed to be sadly just a dream in John's mind. How he went up to the curtains at the end was something remnant of Malcolm X him self. Beautiful guys, just beautiful!

So...I have been listening to this song countless times. In fact, I have been craving this song again and again- not just because of the minor chords used (tremendous fan of songs that use minor chords at appropriate times) but mainly because of the lyrics. Everyone strives to be on top and those who make it are ultimately separated from the rest of the world. Whether by hate or envy, something always divides the human race. But now watching this video, I yearn more than ever for everyone to be on equal standing-no more parted sea. Legend and Chance have created something so beautiful and bittersweet in a time of anger, and as the video ends with the reminder that what we have witnessed was a dream, there is still a silent note, asking if we will finally make the change.

LYRICS: [Verse 1: John Legend] All this trouble in this here town All this shit going down When will they focus, on this? Streets ride up with the TV crews Look ma, we on the news But they didn't notice, before this They float above the city lights Forget the truth, inhale the lies Just enjoy the show They see us reaching for the sky Just ignore that you survive [Chorus: John Legend] Maybe we should go Go to the penthouse floor (let's go, let's go, let's go) Go to the penthouse floor (let's go, let's go, let's go) Let's ride the elevator, they can't keep us out no more Go to the penthouse floor (let's go, let's go, let's go) Penthouse floor [Verse 2: John Legend] All that bubbly, all that wine Oh man, look at the times Didn't they notice, notice? Only future I can see, ain't what it used to be And I didn't know this, I didn't know this Once you're above the city lights Won't want to spend another night, down there on your own The whole world on display for us The altitude is dangerous, but we ain't going home [Chorus: John Legend] Go to the penthouse floor (let's go, let's go, let's go) Go to the penthouse floor (let's go, let's go, let's go) Let's ride the elevator, it's what we've been waiting for Can't keep us out no more (let's go, let's go, let's go) Penthouse floor [Verse 3: Chance The Rapper] I heard this old joke once, it was like, uh Knock knock, who there, it's us, us who? Just us, who dis? Just playin' Just me, new phone, new hair, new era I'm in the penthouse, baby Handpicked from bad apples and bad eggs Held back, I had to grab crab legs And then there were only but a few Conversations held with patience, what a party, what a view What a dress, what a song What a beautiful time My folks downstairs still waitin' in line They never been in these rooms Never stayed with these folks Never laughed at the news, never hated these jokes So as I fly in my suit, in a group, undercover Forcin' a new smile, he tells me another He said "What happened to the boy that climbed up the trunk?" Then he pushed me off the top and said "Jump, nigga, jump!" [Bridge: John Legend] Oh don’t bring me down I need a room up in the clouds I wanna get there babe, I wanna elevate Oh my favorite mix, a little ignorance and bliss In the penthouse babe, go to the penthouse [Chorus: John Legend] Go to the penthouse floor (let's go, let's go, let's go) Go to the penthouse floor (let's go, let's go, let's go) Let's ride the elevator, it's what we've been waiting for We'll tear down those penthouse doors (let's go, let's go, let's go) Those penthouse doors We'll tear down the penthouse doors (let's go, let's go, let's go) Baby, I'm in the penthouse floor Baby, let's ride the elevator Til we can rise some more Go to the penthouse floor, penthouse floor (let's go, let's go, let's go)

How about you disassociate however you feel about "BLM" as a political movement/party and just think about the point of the words "Black Lives Matter" as a statement, as all it's trying to express is that "our lives are SUPPOSED to matter too but you keep killing us, we get no justice and thus show us our lives matter a whole lot less than everyone else's, could you please stop oppressing and killing us and start giving us justice for those you have already killed"... But that's a bit long to chant or put on a board... If people actually took a moment to think about what it really means it would be great but people immediately started jumping to the rebuttal, "All lives matter" which was just stupid.. Yes all lives are SUPPOSED to matter but if some lives are treated as less important than others, then all lives evidently do not matter.
@minglee1497
@minglee1497 6 жыл бұрын
But black lives matter isn’t solely a statement. Black people are not being “oppressed.” Hell the last president was black. And served two terms. The only reason you hear about these occurrences where a person who happens to be black and gets killed is because the news wants to report it. Nothing rakes in more views than something like BLM. Give me some examples of how black people have been mistreated and show me some data that is legitimate on how black people are more oppressed than others and I’ll agree with you. These nothing wrong about BLM, it’s that people are afraid of what it comes with. If people who happen to be black believe all white people are racist, which many do, then there’s nothing wrong with white lives matter either right? Imagine that. The first thing that anyone says is that they are racist and probably memebers of the KKK.

If you're actually interested and want to understand look up videos on things such as redlining, white privileged explained, the vice video about fixing the system explains things very well but is long so look up that when you really have time to watch it I'm it's entirety, look up the statistics showing how disproportionate blacks are disadvantaged across so many aspects of life and think of the real reasons behind it, when you look at the facts it's simply undeniable. If you actually look this stuff up and read/listen to it with an open mind, trying to learn what's really happening, how things INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED to be you'll realise it's not coincidental at all, you just never knew cos it's something you don't experience and it's not something you're gonna get taught. Happy researching yeah 👍😊
@AlThurayya7
@AlThurayya7 6 жыл бұрын
I don't have time atm to reply to everything you mentioned, I'll try to come back and explain things when I do if I can, but one thing to just think about, having one black president is a step forward yes. But also just think, in the history of all the presidents, there has only been one. We've still got a long way to go my friend. Also, it's like if a woman were to become president, would you think sexism was eradicated and now there was total gender equality??

True. On the other hand, this entire video is basically saying that the “rich people” (white) should give up their roles to other people simply because they have a different skin color or gender. This video is clearly directed towards republicans. Notice how he spends the entire video going up and always cuts back to the doors. He’s implying that those at the bottom have little compared to those at the top. One person died at Charlottesville. It was a white woman. Now people are scared because those “racists are at the door.” The KKK is beyond puny in scope. No one is out to get “minorities” but themselves. At this rate in the 22nd century people would be able to do whatever they want as long as they are a “minority.”

omg the message is so extraordinary. The penthouse floor is a symbol.. for..... I guess at this point we can all guess what it is....This was heart wrenching and just at the end when everyone is "crossing the lines" and coming together. DAMNNN

I always find that both sides hate the other and preach about how they want to come together on their own terms, each side wanting them to join their political ideologies in order to even converse with them, rather than put them aside and come together. I like this.

I love the shot with the people in the dining room. It symbolizes everyone having a "seat at the kitchen table", or in other words, everyone has an opportunity to have the power to be heard and influence the world in a positive way. This kitchen table was so full that people are even standing around it. But, that doesn't matter because even those people are welcomed with the love and respect they deserve.

This is a very bold and remarkable song Jon THE Legend has created with Chance. Literally this is about equality of all humans and towards the end when the African American let all the Caucasians inside to celebrate the little get together party, once the man put down the red hat that represented Trumps Campaign and inequality. But then at the revolution of the music video everything disappears and all you hear in rioting from downstairs and Jon immediately closes the curtains. Jon was imagining equality but once everything vanishes its the true reality of this world that we live in and when he says "Lets ride the elevator, its what we've been waiting for" basically explains this , he's been waiting for equality ; everyone that wants equality has still been waiting this very day. This song deserves a Grammy holy lord wow.
