Fun fact, in the books, Watson describes Sherlock in a lot of chapters, and while he just describes what he sees at first, as the stories move forward he starts adding adjectives to the descriptions of Sherlock. You would be surprised at how many times he's emphasized on Sherlock's "long, thin fingers and delicate hands", or his long legs, his posture, his grey eyes, his shoulders... I mean, yes, we need a character's description when reading a book, but I remember getting sometimes distracted, saying things like "dude, I get it, he has delicate hands, moving on".

I totally like to believe Sir Arthur Conan Doyle knew exactly what he was doing giving all his closeted gay fans exactly what they wanted without making it too obvious so prevent himself from being literally cancelled (and worse) by society. As I just learned in university that was not too uncommon , German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe literally did a similar thing in his Prometheus poem by masking his own views and critics of religion and higher instances (especially the christian god tho, there a many bible references in there) and literal hate speech about all that under the mask of greek mythology. That way the people who were supposed to know would know and the ones who weren’t not. (Technically no one was because he didn’t agree with publishing Prometheus, it was literally just „stolen“ and ended up being published against his will lol) but to get back on track: even Shakespeare did it ! - And he’s probably the most famous example! He basically wrote love poems to his male lovers (sometimes more obvious than other times)

If one of them were a girl, the scenes would be drastically different. Same with Supernatural and most likely whatever the fuck MoonBoon is. So, there wouldn't be any subtext. The scenes would be made so different and so touchy, that it would take forever for anyone to see even the slightest bit of subtext between the characters.

0:51 is one of the most important scenes. It's John using his "I'm not gay" sheild, only for it to crumble when Irene said that she's a lesbian, yet she can't help but be in love with Sherlock, Sherlock is her exception. With this, John exasperates, dropping his head in self defeat. He has no way to argue with a statement like that. Sherlock has become an unconditional love for Irene, gender simply not holding meaning anymore for one person. She's implying that John, although attracted to women, can't help his attraction for Sherlock even if he's the opposite gender. She's implying that, Sherlock can intentionally or unintentionally make anyone fall for him.
