A remarkable amount of talented people passed through this building located at 3004 West Lancaster. I know that address by heart. I remember Eddie Gale. Thanks for the great post. A real eye opener. I was not recalling the "pace" accurately. It's all coming back to me now. Carlin arrived later in '59 and one could say things sort of picked up a bit. When George took over "The Coca Cola Hi-Fi Club" he brought along a bit more snap. (Loved that guy as well as all the rest.) Oh the stories there. Should write a book but the editor would cut out all the good stuff. Thank you Earl Fletcher for creating a platform from which so many found benefit, including this writer. Your little KXOL was a giant among giants. Thanks again to John for this post. This stuff is important. Nicely done. Loved the news report on "the cowboys". FYI.. one can hear several of the "Coca Cola Hi-Fi Club" jingles on youtube post titled "WKWF Key West". A funny, entertaining recording from 1960 that was most likely intended as an audition tape for KXOL. It's a fun listen. Runs 26 minutes. Contains some adult language so adults only, okay? -bb

This would be Wednesday, February 4,1959. Odd that they didn’t mention the deaths of Buddy Holly, J.P. Richardson and Richie Valenz from the day before. Maybe they did but it was one of the many edits made to this aircheck.

Eddie says it’s Wednesday evening and the first time given is 7:00pm. The wreckage was discovered at 5am in the morning but reporters weren’t allowed near the crash site until the coroner got there at 11:30am.

I live in DFW and we liked KBOX. It was close to where I grew up and it was on mccree road from 1958-1982. Today this address is gone and houses are built all over where it was located. What was KBOX is now a station that only has Vietnamese programming.

I, too, remember Eddie Gale. I met him when he worked at WNOE in New Orleans and worked for him at WONE in Dayton, Ohio. Sort of lost track of each other after that...sure would like to know what became of him. He was a great jock and PD. I'll always remember his little jingle that went..."Eddie, Eddie, Eddie Gale!"

I was told by Rick Stevens (RIP) that Eddie was killed in a freak auto accident. I've never been able to verify that but I also haven't been able to find him alive either even using private investigator data bases.

@@johndehaven5188 You mean "our" Rick Stevens, 6 to midnight at WONE, Dayton? And, yes, Eddie had a fixation on fast cars (although he was driving a Volvo station wagon when I met him...little Tres had just been born and Eddie's wife, "Bobbie" needed the room.) Shortly after arriving in Dayton, Eddie had a little 2 seater sports car (an MG, I think) then a year or so later...An brand-new shiny silver Corvette! I, myself, managed a brand-new Mustang convertible... life was good!

@@tomnaff8074 I ran into Rick in Clearwater, Fl in 1980. That's when he told me about Eddie. He had heard that Eddie was following a truck with a forklift on the back. The forklift broke loose and went through Eddie's windshield. I've tried many times to find him and always come up dry, so I suspect it's true. Mac Hudson is gone, I read that in the trades. Rick and I came to Nashville and visited you in 1968 or 69. You introduced us to Dallas Frazier and then you took us to a club. I never understood why Rick turned down that job because in the end WONE did him dirty. Chat soon

Does ANYBODY know what the "Eddie Gale Show 'pick hit' of the day" was at 17:34 ? I realize it may have been a joke but it DID sound kind of catchy! Freeman Gosden, great hearing him! Also, it sounded like a great ad-lib correction with radio promo mistakenly being played @23:13! UPDATE - I found the "pick hit of the day" was a song called, "Halvah" by 'Ganimian & His Orientals/Oriental Music' from the record, "Come With Me To The Casbah".

@@frankmerrill2366 I know exactly what you mean, we tend to think of Asia when we think of the "Orient"; however, the term originally referred to the Near East and eventually included the Far East. I discovered a book written in the late 1800's that referred to the Middle East as the "orient" in relation to sacred writing and later learned that Istanbul and Paris were destinations of eminence on The Orient Express. 👍🏻

@@louisb5563 It's true that we "orient" our location (within a regional geographic picture) when we're looking at a map. I understand that some of the oldest maps, instead of having North at the top, faced East (at the top). With the "East" being called "The Orient", I've wondered if that term relates to orienting oneself by maps that may have pointed east, and perhaps it existed in that sense before the region was thusly named? You're right, there was indeed the Orient Express - which didn't go beyond Turkey to the east, right? In my lifetime, though, people usually say "The Orient" when talking about the region with China, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, etc. in it. (I don't think that description tends to include the Philippines?) I know I could Google it, but this thought literally came up JUST NOW as I wrote my response. This happens to me often, even at 76 years old. Just writing something out can bring up new questions I never considered before. Usually the people who are sometimes called "Orientals" (a disparaging term) are those with facial features from that part of the world. I don't even remember it ever applying to people from India, who also sometimes have distinctive facial attributes, so that reinforces my thoughts of The Orient being limited to eastern Asia.

I love how AM stations used "Channel ____" in their promos,People today probably think this is a reference to television, It's not, It's actually a reference to FM (which actually HAS channel numbers!) FM was just getting going in the late '50s, (and in '61 would get stereo!) The references by AM stations to "Hi-fi" and "channels" was a way for existing AM stations to be "with it", Ironically, They had nothing to fear, FM wouldn't be take over the popular market for 20 years!

Oh, OK, so "Color Radio" was a reference to FM too, Professor? No, it WAS radio's way of competing with the growing medium of TV. Remember, there was a time when radio was the ONLY game in town. TV was on its way to coming of age in the 50s. "Color Radio" makes no sense if you're thinking FM because you can't see it like you can TV. An example of this is KFWB, which called itself "Color Radio Channel 98."

On AM in the late 50's/ early 60's, any references that made it sound contemporary was embraced. Ditto for anything referencing hi-fi. And you're also right about AM remaining the commercial broadcast standard until the late 60s/ early 70's. Not until then were there any profits being made on commercial FM, and top 40 didn't arrive to commercial FM in any big way until about 73 or 74.

Many airchecks are done that way.(called "scoped"). A true "aircheck" is part of the air talent's portfolio, so his/her performance (along with how they sound related to the ads,news,etc.) is the focus, the actual records are entirely irrelevant, akin to "stock footage".....

Airchecks were RECORDED that way. It was a way for a DJ to have a sample of their work - like a portfolio. It is also a general sample of the station. A person interested in purchasing a station would listen to several air checks before even considering listening for prolonged periods of time. The music didn't matter - it mattered, but you didn't have to listen to the entire song to get the DJs skills, the style of station, or to know what type of music they played - it was about the intros, the outros, and the vocals in between the songs. The person who uploaded it did not cut anything out.

The recorder would (usually) be wired to keep recording as long as the mic was hot. Often, DJ's would quickly 'pot' themselves down after the start of the song, but the mic channel would be technically hot until switched off at the board. More than once (ahem), I forgot and left my mic on (not open, just potted down). Every now and then, a song would come to an end, I'd reach over to switch on my mic and see it was still on -- but thankfully completely potted down. That's likely why there's inconsistency here-- some songs completely included, others clipped at the top. It's just the mic switch triggering the aircheck recorder switch.

Nope, it's likely exactly as recorded. I've got a million reels of my own work that sound the same, because the recorder on switch was linked to the mike switch. If you left it on, it would catch all that was on program. DJs would often pot themselves down and keep the mic hot.
