I wasn't paying much attention to the second joint at first, so I assumed all those 2X4's would be half-lapped with the 4 dowels going through the center where the half-laps meet. I thought "that's actually a good joint in the right application. What's he talking about it being trash?"... Then I saw the actual "joint". I guess I didn't suspect anyone would think that such a design would actually work, let alone post it after guaranteed failure. I dunno...maybe he's new to this craft and is excited. But if so, it serves as a good example: people who are new to something, and excited about learning it, should not be teaching others how to do it.

13:15 you can set the depth on my sliding miter saw, it has a bolt and locking nut that will set the depth and fine adjust it. Then you can mill pretty well with it. Also, account for the width of the blade in full. You need to creep up on those widths, preferable to be too tight and sand it or scrape it out with a chisel, you can also put a slight bevel in on the corners and really jam it tight so it won't budge.
@chris_toph_772 жыл бұрын
Great video and thanks for debunking the strange ones! I like the castle joint. Btw, there is a depth stop option on the Makita chop saw (I have the same model), and when you use a block as spaces against the fence, you can cut dados with it. That does work rather well for small dados or half laps.

@WildEagleWoodworks2 жыл бұрын
The guy was planing beams. It's actually normal practice for planing huge beams because they're too heavy to just feed through the planer and actually keep them level. I laughed too at the video when I saw it and the Carpenter I was working for explained this to me. Made sense once he did. Definitely won't be a good idea with smaller/lighter boards.

@pidinik2 жыл бұрын
I've seen it used on long heavy beams on jobsites before and with good supports and at least one person on both sides of the beam it seemed to work well. Using it in a shop for boards alone is dangerous nonsense. When this originally emerged the point was 'how to plane stuff that's too heavy for your planer on site'

That castle joint is sweet and I can see why Jordan's been wanting to use it in a project for so long. My vote would be for a pedestal table where you use a log/tree trunk as the upright and maybe logs cut in half for the top and bottom of the upright so the flat parts of the half logs are flat on the floor and underside of the table top. I hope that made sense 😅
@Rottwiler442 жыл бұрын
That’s my immediate though for a castle joint as well, big old pedestal table. It’d be a nice joint for a bed frame as well!!
@andrewwebb21412 жыл бұрын
By the time you set up the planer to run, you could just run the board through and be done 🤷♂️ Dowel trick in joint, I assume the boards were glued first, then drilled out. Which would defeat the purpose of the dowels 🤔 Keep up the great videos, the whole team is fun to watch
@andrewwebb62702 жыл бұрын
Not going to lie, I saw your comment and got EXTREMELY confused as this is my first time watching this video haha.
@Bluestrike22 жыл бұрын
If the glued up piece was really too heavy to maneuver, it’d be faster-not to mention easier and less dangerous-to just grab a hand plane and some winding sticks. For pieces that are difficult to maneuver (due to weight and/or size) or would require you to figure out workarounds due to the limitations of your machines, sometimes the easiest solutions are hand tools.
