Perhaps an alternative method of cutting the 45 degree angle on the top piece of ply would be on the router table with a 45 degree bit. Just a thought.

Great build and explanation. What stops the plane blade catching and messing up the fence? It seemed like you put it flush so surely once the workpiece planes down it ends up taking some off the mitred fence end?

Possibly more of a general shooting board question, but how do you prevent the plane blade removing material from the board edge? Imagine this would eventually bring it out of square.

The front of the plane runs on the work piece which is slightly proud of the fence, you are working back to the square edge so you don't remove material from it. Although it can happen and over time and the jig can be worn out.

This would be an issue if you were using a rabbeting plane where the blade spans the entire width of the plane. However, you will use a bench or miter plane where the mouth opening is narrower than the plane's sole leaving a small area of sole on either side of the mouth (and blade) -- this is what prevents the plane from cutting into your shooting board. Advancing the blade further than it has been before will cut deeper into the shooting board, but the plane will still track along the same path due to that thin area of plane's sole and the portion of the shooting board that this area rides against. Hope that helps.

Can be done with hand tools, the 45 degree angles can be made with a hand plane. A circular saw with a straight edge for a guide will do most of it to.

Hello, excuse the question, but wouldn't a bevel up plane with a smaller angle be better? I ask because I would like to buy a plane for this I work it. I was thinking of the Stanley 1-12-137, but I have some doubts, I seem to see that you use a plane with a quidni bevel down counter iron. Can you clarify my ideas? Thank you

That looks simple and very effective. Is there a reason for the extra space behind the fence? If you did put the fence aligned with the nicely squared back edge of the base, it could simplify the initial placement before fine tuning the angle, and would give you a bit more working room from the same sized components. This does assume accurately parallel edges to the fence, so aligning its back edge orients its front. Without a table saw I guess that is not as good an assumption.

Its to allow for the length of the plane, you want the plane to reference the square edge all the way through the workpiece

So I'm having trouble understanding why the plane doesn't just eat up the fence and the upper level of plywood that the workpiece sits on. I've seen others cut a small rabbet on the upper level that equal to the gap between the blade and edge of the planer's sole which would mitigate that. It isn't present in this case but I can't wrap my head around why it doesn't chew it up on each pass. Sorry, I'm just getting in to woodworking and don't have tools yet.

Nice video John. Question for you. Your old plane cabinet is still on the wall, is there a reason. I have no explanation why but every video I watch my eye is drawn to an empty cabinet. lol. Side note I'm starting to make a table top bench moxon vise. Watched your videos on it. Probably 6 times writing notes as I go.

Yes, a little. The key is that the blade doesn't go all the way across the sole of the plane; there is an edge on both sides. So the plane will leave a small lip on the very bottom of the shorter 45 degree edge. The body of the plane will stay on that small lip easy enough, as long as you keep enough pressure on the right side of the plane, which is riding on the larger 45 degree laminated board. If you were to try and do this with a Carriagemaker's bench plane (e.g. a Stanley No10) or rebate bench plane, then it won't work because the blade goes across the width of the plane and so wouldn't leave a small lip for the plane to ride on.
