See if you can get a used ipad or ipad mini. Some synth programs need the screen space of the ipad. Also, you can also get a powered USB hub which also has an "audio interface" (headphone jack) built in if you have to use a newer phone with no headphone jack. The interface in the hub avoids electrical noises that are sometimes in the devices when they get busy, as well.

I ordered my first midi keyboard yesterday, and it will arrive tomorrow. I am using a Android phone with the CPU speed / core number slightly higher than the iPhone 6. Wish me luck. I took piano lessons for 1 year when I was 5. I am trying to pick up again after decades with all the modern tech unimaginable when I was a boy, and now the KZbin music knowledge.

Hi, can I do this with the more recent iphones? I am having difficulty with amplifying the sound following the connection of a midi usb dongle. It generates sound on the iPhone XR max, but if I put the charger/audio splitter it no longer controls the iPhone. I seem to be able to get just one out per time. This is because those new phones don’t come with a 3.5mm point. Kindly help.

I’ve never used the Korg M-1 app but there aren’t many good sounding free apps that cost less than $20...MKSensation comes with some free sounds but to get the good ones in the app you have to pay for them...SampleTank is the same way...

No not directly in the app...however you can get an app called AUM that will allow to load and control multiple software instrument apps and layer them together

Great video John this was really helpful I really like your set up. What do you think of the M-Track Hub by M- Audio? This could be a great compact interface for a set up like this. I'm thinking of adding it into my setup. Thanks to you I went ahead and purchased the MKsesations and the Korg Module rather than buying an expensive new keyboard this had added a new life to my Keystation 61 & 49. Great apps - also check out Pure Synth which is available and if you'd like to add another Piano / Rhodes the FMTines (both by Gospel Musicians). The Korg Module is also amazing with all the extra sound banks and presets that can be added via in-app-purchase.

+Rev HD yes...the bottom board is plugged up to an outlet...but the top board is powered from the phone via usb...everything else is plugged up to a power strip
