Hi John! Thanks for your user review. Great to see you are using the LX88 on a daily basis - and still liking it! :) You are right on the points you criticize, and in spite of the affordable price we of course want to keep improving our controllers! So you letting us know what you like - and what you don't - is a big help. We take all of our users' comments very seriously, and try to incorporate as much as possible in future products. On the new generation LX+88, which came out a couple months ago, we have already incorporated some of the points you mentioned (the balance white/black keys for instance). Cheers, Ralf//Nektar

These post reviews are really helping me out, thanks for doing these! I appreciate the view of someone who is a pianist and has specific demands of the feel and velocity (and noise hah) of the keys. I'm looking for something that travels well and feels good enough, so this is helping narrow the field.

I just got the 49 today. A lot to learn. First time using anything like this. I like it a lot so far. Just trying to figure it out a bit. The key loudness will not matter to me, but I understand your position. It is like fingers making string noise on a guitar switching positions. Love your reviews.

Hi John and thanks for your review! I also own a Lx88+ and have the same "problem" with the keys. I love this keyboard but for play piano I agree is not the best. Still doesn't have found a controller like this with a very good keyboard piano quality (although not weighted).

John, seeing your thoughts on the Nektar keyboard action and touch sensitivity issues has minded me against pulling the trigger on a secondhand LX88. The updated model with the 'plus' designation may be more to my purpose. My experience of keyboard touch response disparity was with a Thomann 'Swissonic' 49 note midi controller keyboard. I bought two in order to have an organ style set-up with a Ferrofish module. Using them exclusively for organ, I remained unaware of a significant response differential between black and white keys until over a year later (when the warranty had expired) when I connected them up with a rhodes/piano sound engine. Curious that only one of the keyboards exhibited the problem. I put my position to Thomann who said they were unable to help.

Very encouraging to hear that after a year of daily use, yours is standing up, as I just happened to buy an 88 key today! The noisy keys are not an issue at all. I have a real Baldwin piano, and when you step on the mute pedal to muffle the sound (for practice), the mechanical keys are just as noisy, even on a Baldwin! I was concerned that the all plastic build quality, and made in China (which probably means slave labor) might be an issue, but as I say, since you’re still cooking after a year of use, including travel, that’s very good to hear. I was very close to getting an AKAI 49 key, in the same price range, because it’s made in free Taiwan, and the build quality is great, with a metal chassis, but I opted for the NECTAR mainly because of the smooth plug and play integration with Logic Pro X and the full piano 88 keys (even though I have a real piano). I didn’t want any limitations. 👍👌
@J3unG
@J3unG Жыл бұрын
So...your requirement for a keyboard controller is whether or not it's made in what you think is a commie country? I guess you don't know that Taiwan is PART OF CHINA. It's never been NOT a part of China. You are an idiot. BTW...the keyboard noise should never be an issue. Playing a real piano has similar noise depending on the age and condition of the piano. It's not a big deal and really is not an issue. As far as I'm concerned, this thing is just fine for non-acoustic work. Sub $200 for a controller with faders, knobs and velocity pads is the shit. I'm buying one as a result of this review.

Hi John, thank you so much, great review. For me, even dynamics are really important. I want the same volume for every key when I play them with the same force... I don't want any notes to stick out when I play without me meaning it. So my question: is the Komplete Kontrol a61 better in this regard? I'm sure the Nectar has many good sides, too. But I'm focussed on this aspect a lot.

I have been watching stuff on your channel for quiet some time. I dont play keys but I still need some sort of reliable controller because my Fishman Triple play guitar to MIDI pickup, works only when it feels like it wants to work. I also want something with drumming pads, and this controller is very cheap, so I was wondering, would you recommend this for a key noob like me? I will probably upgrade to something better after some time but I just want something to start with for now and this looks more interesting then akai MPKmini. I was also looking at M-Audio Keystation 61 MK3. This one dont have drum pads, but people realy like using it. Its a very simple keyboard and slightly less clicking sounds.

sry for digging up an old comment but i'm considering buying this - just from the various videos i really like the keybed, but the loudest notes have sounded very aggressive and grating in the few videos ive seen. is that what you meant? if yes, could you please explain how exactly does 'adjusting this' work? do you like set a velocity ceiling somewhere inside the default daw (or controller) settings, or do you just have to shrink the whole velocity range? i guess what im asking is whether limiting the velocity works more like a compressor or more like a limiter. im just thinking whether its workable for someone who wants to play a whole gig with this on stage, or whether changing these settings would compromise the expression of the keybed too much.

Hi John, first excuse for my english but I try..(I’m from Holland). I have the same keyboard and have a fix for the noisy keys. I open Up the keyboard and looked where the keys hit the bottom of the keyboard. Where the keys hit, there is a thin black stroke. I remove it and clean it with nail remover. I bought a strip that we use for windows to keep the cold outside. I don’t know the word in english. It is 3 mm thick. i replace it on the spot of the black stroke. Close the keyboard eind voila......no noisy keys. Maybe you can do something with my idea. Good luck and best regards from Holland.

This is gonna sound dumb but what happens to the values of those faders when you switch modes. For example if you have the volume at 40 in instrument mode if you click the mixing button does the master volume of the mix now sit at 40% since the physical location of the fader hasn’t moved
@Johnmike
@Johnmike 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the software you use...some daws have a setting to either “catch” the fader where you move them from...so if in software the volume is a 80 but your fader is at 40 when you switch to mixing...when you touch it the software fader will instantly move to 40...

are the keys on its 88 version different than the 61 version?
@baldrsdreams9727
@baldrsdreams9727 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. The 61 version is synth action, the lx 88 is semi weighted. I suppose the 88 is a tiny bit quieter (less clacking) but not enough so to be a selling point. It's a hell of a keyboard, you won't find a better one in that price range as of this posting, but it's still not a professional instrument.

Hi Michael! Just a quick one - we have launched the new LX+88 a couple months back, it replaces the LX and it's got a new keyboard mechanism. John's criticism is absolutely justified - and as we want to keep improving our controllers, we take all your feedback in and try to incorporate as much as we can. So it would be worth, double-checking, if you like it better!

Hi John. Great video. Can you tell me what is the advantage of an 88-key midi controller over those with less number of keys? Does it matter when composing and recording a music ? Thank you.
@Johnmike
@Johnmike 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on what type of composer you are...if you are a pianist and will be playing a lot of full piano tracks then you need 88-keys...but if you are just doing synth work, programming or beat making...it’s not necessary

I have found that 61 keys is limited in the bass section, a few more keys down there make a huge difference for bass lines. 73 keys would be ideal but nobody seems to make those for controller keyboards.

Saw this from Chris Pallas on the Nektar users FB group. I haven't tried it yet but it might be the answer to uneven velocity on black keys: I finally found a solution where with a plugin first in your chain in your DAW you can adjust the sensitivity of the black keys to your liking! For Reaper users things are very simple: Just download this JSFX here and copy it in your Reaper resources (Options --> Show REAPER resource path in explorer/finder --> Copy the downloaded file under folder "Effects" --> Restart Reaper and you can find the plugin under the JS plugins with the name "NEKTAR Black Keys Velocity Fixer") stash.reaper.fm/v/40501/NEKTAR%20Black%20Keys%20Velocity%20Fixer For non-Reaper (but still VST) users you should download and install ReaPlugs from here www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/ in order to be able to use the ReaJS plugin. After installing it, also download the file here stash.reaper.fm/v/40501/NEKTAR%20Black%20Keys%20Velocity%20Fixer and copy it to the folder where you installed ReaPlugs (usually VSTPlugins folder as usual) under JS/Effects directory. Now you should be able to see & choose the script named "NEKTAR Black Keys Velocity Fixer" when you open ReaJS plugin in your DAW under the "Load" menu in the MIDI category. And now you can enjoy your Nektar keyboard to its fullest!

It may be good for other things but as someone who solely does piano I find it hot trash cause of the noise, velocity issues, and small keys, makes it much harder to play. That velocity issue gets worse with time and eventually you have to turn off velocity.
