I recently saw this episode on Netflix. It was the 2nd to last episode of this great show. It was totally different than all the others; mostly one man (not a team), very little high tech. Filmed in the desert (not Vancouver). Contemporary music (well from the 70s). Very different, truly great. They canceled this show 5 years too soon.

As cool as sg1 was in introducing a new path of science fiction, atlantis was fantastic with the wraith considering they annihilated the ancients.

Richard Dean Anderson defined the series more than anyone else. Cool as Atlantis was, the team really was a specter living in the shadow cast by SG-I. Atlantis, while entertaining, tried to retrace the steps of SG-I (there being an alien, a female, a sort of a contrarian rabble-rousing leader and a somewhat autistic genius) When Anderson fell out of the picture, the whole setting lost much of its appeal. It wasn't bad without him, but wasn't great either. That's the breath and length of Atlantis, really. It had a few excellent episodes, but nothing that really rivaled the spirit of SG-I. This episode though, was definitely one of the exceptional ones, Johnny Cash's song (which I deem to be his best one even though it's a cover) highlighted a change of pacing which really set the episode aside from the other ones in an era when Stargate's formula was becoming stale.

@@sandercohen9712 I disagree, the series was different, in a lot of ways I wasn't expecting. yes, we had the antagonists, main ones being the Wraith, but other factions (Genii, surviving Setadans, etc)....there were an incredible amount of episodes that played on our hearts, things really stood out to me when I binged watched it during the covid fiasco, a lot of moments that seem casual at the time, took on an entirely new meaning, I credit the writing crew and direction, hard to make a niche for yourself when you constantly compared to the original....

He crawled away from his car and laid down on his back to look up at the sky, eyes open. There's planes in the air above him and the Daedalus or some other ship is in Earth orbit so it's possible he gets beamed up and medical attention.

Alternate universe or alternate timeline episodes give science fiction actors an opportunity to step out a bit and play different roles or explore different possibilities for their characters, and Stargate Atlantis made the most of that opportunity in this excellent episode that draws on the entire series for the essential back story while having a completely different feel, different sets, and different motivations for the characters.
