I am a psychiatrist myself and I feel ashamed of this spectacle. It makes me worry about the portrayal of our profession. Dennison is sharp as hell. He's not like Camille, he doesn't match wits in rapid fire or yank him around by his collar. At first, he barely seems to able to grasp the "expert's" testimony and needs him to explain the simplest thing. But, while this lunatic is running his mouth, thinking he's putting on a dazzling show for a roomful of morons, the lawyer is cruising in under the radar to quietly sidle up and park by his jugular. He uses the quack's contempt and grandiosity against him like jujitsu. Instead of clashing with his opponent, he lays brutal traps, then methodically leads him toward his doom. He reminds me of Peter Falk's old detective character, Columbo, who used to stick close to his quarry, giving the impression of a slow witted cop the suspect can easily manipulate into drawing the wrong conclusion. But his frustration grows as Columbo fails to grasp the clues he's being fed and keeps investigating. Eventually his desperation and arrogance lead the bad guy to incriminate himself at the same time he realizes his fatal error in underestimating the slow witted detective toying with him all along.
