Gerald never broke the conciousness of the white record-buying public because he didn't have "THE SONG" while he was alive. Luther had "THE SONG"; "Here And Now". Lionel Richie had a BOATLOAD of those songs. R&B has a certain groove & frequency & utilizes a bit of funk, jazz, soul & hip-hop(now); pop songs are a lot more concentrated on major & minor basic chords, less on the drum sounds & patterns. Gerald had GREAT success in the R&B market in the booth, behind the board, onstage without a mic, a MEAN pen game, great business acumen by signing Men At Large, not to mention R&B royalty AND his brother in the same group he was in? With all that said, he didn't hit "THE SONG" in his lifetime. Salute to the Levert family.

@@LeMicahLevert no disrespect but those are all very popular black songs. I look at it like this because I'm a DJ; would any of those you mentioned be played at a black wedding or a white one? That's my gauge.

That's why I don't like the industry for this they make the black artist feel like if they haven't crossed over they hadn't made it when mostly all his albums and Records went gold and platinum but they don't view the same crossover for white artists to Black to verify they made it. And it's sad when these artists feel like they haven't made it in reality they have

He didn’t win any for Bad, but he did win one for Off the Wall’s Don’t Stop Till’ You Get Enough. Not winning one for Bad seemed kind of legit since he was against the likes of Prince, Whitney, U2, etc. Just disappointing for him as the Thriller follow up, which swept the Grammy’s.

No talented gifted music artist should ever measure their success based on winning a damn Grammy or any award! 🙄 We know who runs the Grammys & other award shows! I stopped watching the Grammys & Oscar’s over a decade ago, because of their biased choices. Since the 90’s the record industry has slowly pushed out R&B real talent! They pushed this BS “crossover “ appeal to white audiences and diluted to so called “pop music” artists who are biracial and “exotic “, with subpar untalented & voice enhancing technology . We saw this trend on American Idol, with the people they chose as the winners. Only a few has still gone strong in the business like Fantasia. But most of their winners was white or biracial. Thank goodness Jennifer Hudson didn’t win with their lame record labels! She is super talented, but they didn’t want her because she has that rich black songstress voice and was not anorexic thin. I am 60 years old and always loved Johnny Gill’s soulful vocals and gifted talent, since he was a teenager in the business. Don’t ever let any whyte award define your greatness! Your legacy is how you managed to be a great professional talented successful entertainer and is still filling up venues after 40 years. A lot of fly by nights can’t even fill up a bar! So count your blessings and understand that there are plenty of us out here who appreciate your legacy in the music industry! God bless. ❤️🙏🏾😊
