My mother used to sing this song to her horse rebel star we grew up singing this song to him under stressful situations parades shows water jumps I know it’s sad but he loved it and it always calmed him downWe her girls also sang it to our horses for some reason it always worked like a dream

Johnny Horton was an legend and icon. He was all country. Wished he had lived Long enough so everyone could adore His songs and the sweet mellow voice He had. Not on records but in a concert. Music now days is not country. JOHNNY HORTON WAS ALL COUNTRY.

I don’t think Johnny Horton ever recorded a bad song. You can pick any song he sings and you will be amazed by it. My personal favorites are The Battle of New Orleans and Sink the Bismark. He sings a great variety of subjects. Lost love, historical, humorous, adventure , just everything.

I grew up as a youth with the British invasion, and they were very talented. How ever, John Horton was four years gone by, by this time so I never heard of him . In the last few years I came across the song North to Alaska and then Y.T. recommended other songs by Mr. Horton, Bismark, some rocka billy stuff and military tinged stuff. historical,I forget now what they call them, Comanche, one of my favorites as well and this song and others so I did a deep dive.. This song is one of my favorites . Not only because of Johnny's talented soulful singing, but also the era in which he represents. He brings me back to a time in America when America had soul

My favorite song of Johnny’s. I love all his history lesson songs, but my other favorites are . All for The Love Of A Girl and his The Mansion You Stole. Nobody does a heartbreak ballad better than Johnny Horton!

I can’t remember which song it is, but he was really famous for a different song in my parents time. Just remembered. It’s that one that goes:🎶 In 1814 we took a little trip, down the Mississipp. I remember a class mate doing a project on that song in grade 7. The song that epitomizes loneliness to me is “ I Am I Said”, by Neil Diamond. I loved that whole “Stones” album, but that song in particular. Listened to it for decades, but one line used to bug me: I am I said/ To no one there/ But no one heard/ NOT EVEN THE CHAIR. I used to think it was a stupid line, and wonder how such a poignant song could have such a line. After listening to it maybe 1000 times, I was really really down one time, and the image finally popped into sight. Being so lonely, feeling isolated and without validation, that you were in a room, alone, with nothing but furniture, and unable to feel connected to anything, not even the chair. That’s pretty lonesome. You have to be pretty down to feel that line. Glad it finally made the whole song flow.

I always remembered the chorus of this lovely song but mostly listened to Johnny's more aggressive (?) songs. I love North to Alaska and saw the movie of the same name many years ago starring John Wayne. Quick question, can you recommend any headphones? I've had two sets and they are both poor quality.

@joyce mcfee I use Bose, and I think they cost around $200. There are other good headphones for less than that, and you can probably shop online for sales, but if listening to music is a big part of your enjoyment, spending a bit more usually makes a difference.

I think you’re getting soft as you age. In your scorings. I think you are learning to appreciate the songs more now and that results in more 10’s. I am not disagreeing with you but I bet if you went back and redone some of your earlier reactions you would change a lot of your 9+ to 10’s also. Keep up the good work. @scottandal I may be getting softer, but I think that it may be that more gold are getting a read on me and recommending songs that are closer to what they think will hit me hard. But when it comes down to it, I’ve still only given out something like 12 perfect scores out of 1100 songs, so my guess is that it’s a coincidence that there were a couple recently.
