I had to say, the cyberpunk aesthetics of the 90s and 80s are rougher, grainier, and grittier than that of the 2010's and 2000's. Also I loved this film's set design, I thought they at least did a good job in that department
@Flashback_Jack
@Flashback_Jack 2 жыл бұрын
The 90s did cyberpunk right; nothing has since come close, including the Matrix, which is probably second best. Johnny Mnemonic captured a lot of Gibson's imagination as I interpreted it in the book, particularly the technicolour geometric abstractions of cyberspace and the cynical punk rock attitudes. Sure it could have used a bigger budget, but it was pretty good for its time.

To this day, I think the Room Service scene and Reeve's performance in it, are an extra-dimensional fragment of a far superior cyberpunk film that inexplicably ended up edited into this movie.

I sympathize with Gibson and the director. Nevertheless, this is still one of my favorite "so bad it's good" films. It's so cheesy and just the type of film you play at parties and riff on with your friends while eating popcorn and drinking beer. Dolph Lundgren steals the show and Keanu's performance is a hilarious mixture of Nicolas Cage and Tommy Wiseau (Disclaimer: Keanu is awesome and I'm very glad he's made a comeback with the John Wick movies). The "room service" bit is pure gold. Great review, Oliver! Keep up the good work. Also, since Superman celebrates his 80th anniversary this year, can you please review Superman Returns?

Thanks to a sci-fi journaIist friend of mine, I was at a pre-release screening of "Johnny Moronic" here in Vancouver. William Gibson, who I had met several years prior at a convention, was also present at that showing. There was supposed to be a Q&A session, but as soon as the end credits began to roll, Mr. Gibson immediately left the theatre, ducking out of said session. We met him outside the venue and a little piece further down Granville St., shortly afterwards. By his laconic reaction which wasn't complimentary in the least, we figured the worst. I'll never forget what he said... "It's best I left and it's best, I say nothing. The producers are inside." The best disavowal of a movie, I've ever heard.
@Alfador42
@Alfador42 6 жыл бұрын
The worst part about this is, in my humble opinion, the fact that if they had tried keeping the movie as close as possible to the actual short story, I think the movie would have been amazing. I don't get that need to scramble movie adaptations so much. And I don't buy the argument they (studios and movie producers) often make about the absolute need to change and morph a book so that they can make a movie out of it. That's bullshit.
@Bonez0r
@Bonez0r 6 жыл бұрын
D It's to appeal to the biggest audience possible. Even if an original story is the greatest one ever written, something in this genre is still written for a niche audience. If that's translated 1:1 to the big screen then it's only going to appeal to that same niche audience. That's not what big movie studios want. So they start meddling, resulting in a mess of a movie that nobody wants to watch.
@Alfador42
@Alfador42 6 жыл бұрын
I see your point but I disagree. Johnny Mnemonic is a perfect example of that. There's intrigue, there's action, there's humour, there's suspense etc. A little something for everybody. The fact is, you can't ever make a movie that will please everyone, every slice of society. That's impossible, so if indeed, studios are bent on pleasing everyone every time they release a movie, then, I consider that a commercial pipe dream. Not to mention that they obviously failed with their Johnny Mnemonic enterprise!

As a cyberpunk, I loved this movie in spite of its numerous faults. My dad and I use to argue over it. He hated it. I didn't. It really hasn't aged well, but it still holds some charm for me, due to how cheesy and 90s it is. Really wish they released the German BD/Japanese Cut over here. While it doesn't fix the movie's larger issues; it really does provide some much needed backstory & development for Kitano and Dolph's characters. I found it much more coherent and enjoyable over all as a result.

I just watched it a couple of days ago - all I knew of it was that it got bashed back in the 90s when it came out as being a terrible movie. Anyways a bad movie can be good - and this was sort of that, except I wouldn't say it's bad, it's just stupid - but really entertaining. It's always enjoyable seeing really bad takes on the future, so that's another big plus.

28:20 i loved Johnny M, and was also an avid SHADOWRUN player in 98 when the first MATRIX trailer dropped. i went into this movie suspecting that the reason the trailers had so many stunts was because it was literally, THE MATRIX, the evolved internet from SHADOWRUN, which also resembles the internet in JOHNNY M.

The version I watched was scored by Brad Fiedel and I liked that. I had no idea it had 3 different versions and it's quite shit how they cut a lot of Dolph Lundgren's scenes, he plays a bonkers character and it would have been nice to have more background for his character. Neuromancer is my favorite book, so for all these years Johnny Mnemonic is unfortunately the closest I ever had for a movie set in that universe. I even bought the screenplay. It's really the second director's cut I would want to see the most, apart from John McTiernan's cut of the 13th Warrior. I had high hopes upon learning that Vincenzo Natali was attached to Neuromancer, but unfortunately it fell apart. Hopefully Tim Miller will do the book justice.

"Takahashi lost his daughter to NES". Should have bought her a ZX Spectrum. I remember when the film came out, and I believe Barry Norman called it Johnny Moronic. There were also jokes made at the time that Keanu's brain could hold a maximum of 2 Megabytes. They should have cast Ian Dury as Ralfi. It wasn't a 90's cyberpunk film, unless you had Ian Dury as a dodgy side character who supplies things. Udo Kier had a similar role to here in the Cyberpunk flavored Barb Wire, released a year after JM.

Would be absolutely worthy of a remake. Also, that laser whip thing is a usable weapon in Cyberpunk 2077 - you can see it in one of the trailers.

I wouldn't call this film a failure. I think it's a triumph! I liked Henry Rollins - the way he said "OK, 'Just Johnny'" was awesome. Ice T looked silly in my eyes. It's just so much fun and I thought the action was good. I wish virtual reality and the internet was like it is here. With ai's you can talk to and intimidate with your cyber powers. I think this film was as influential as Blade Runner is framing what cyberpunk is. It's one of my favourite films ever.

The irony of your review is, yes the special effects were original/cool for the time. BUT I think the ending is very cool. But ALSO The doctor explaining what important info Johnny is actually holding in his head and With Ice-T/J-Bone announcing that its the cure and the company didnt want you to have it. Sounds like today, 20 years later. Cures for the major diseases held back because then NO money for minor treatments and major research.

Seeing the (nearly) opening screen: "Internet, 2021" made me chuckle.Why do futuristic science fiction movies always do this? Make the year too close to the present time? Either keep the date ambiguous, or add an extra 100 years on there.

Finished watching this yesterday on 2/24/2022 but originally watched it on January of 2021 where the film as well as original story takes place in and all I have to say is what an underrated film this was. Such an interesting film as well mainly because its based in 2021, and that they were predicting what 2021 was going to be like; thankfully 2021 was not like that but I do have to say its somewhat similar and they did predict one thing; a pandemic alongside sickness taking place which they were right as we have this awful pandemic taking place which has now been 2 years since it first started. Not sure why this movie gets so much hate but out of all honesty I do see some reasons. Overall, it was a very interesting movie, yes its kind of all over the place, interesting and difficult to explain but it did have a great storyline, characters, cast such as Ice-T as well as young Keanu Reeves alongside soundtrack. A bit creepy, and confusing in some scenes but other than that it was amazing. Plus the fact that its based in 2021, really goes to show how far ahead they were thinking/predicting which even though much that they predicted hasn't come fully true yet, it slowly is, especially with the chips and of course the metaverse being a thing now. Not only that, but the fact that its origins came from a book that was written long ago where things weren't as futuristic as it is now, really goes to show how futuristic the author was even if it cut short in the end which to me was fine as most stories end like that otherwise you'd have to continue on or perhaps have another film for but other than that it truly was truly an amazing film and a film that was very interesting to watch. Glad to have watched it especially in 2021, and in 2022.

This movie was like a 2h video audition for K.Reeves when the Watsowskis were searching for their lead for the Matrix and as you mentioned in your wonderful review many people didn't go to cinemas for the Matrix cause they believed it was too similar to JM ...22:26 It looked boring and not that interesting but it's true 90s it was a really different movie but as a kid of the 90s I never liked this movie it reminds me of other futuristic sci fi movies that failed to be successful or to have the cultural impact of Blade Runner&the Matrix like Strange Days Arnold's 6th day or Virtuosity(1995) with Denzel Washington and R.Crowe (before Gladiator) that dealed a lot with VR it was a trend in the 90s even movies like Disclosure had VR scenes that looked kinda cool then but they aged horribly ...VR scenes and Cinema don't mix IMO

Thanks. Here's a movie that could really do with a remake! Something edgy & dark would be great, to fit the dystopian themes. It's interesting you mentioned both Virtuosity and The Lawn Mower Man. It's become clear that Hollywood was steadily leading up to something like The Matrix - though it's ultimate form was still a revelation. I've been trying to find movies that were the intellectual & technological predecessors to The Matrix, but that's apparently an over-specific thing to search for online! I'd be very interested in your thoughts on how movies like TRON, etc., led up to The Matrix, ways in which The Matrix leaped beyond its precursors, and some examples of its descendants. Also - I forgot Henry Rollins was in this! tavi.

Honestly I prefer this movie over The Matrix wholeheartedly. I mean its still not a very good film but I adore Keanu Reeves in this and I'm a sucker for this style of Cyberpunk. I do wish I could see a version like the original director intended. Sign me up for artsy cyberpunk film.

Cesar Rodriguez The Matrix may be a better film in terms of pacing and filmmaking technicality but I could give a shit less about the whole plot about machines rising, and humans living as power cells in a AI simulation, with them living underground or whatever. I prefer Johnny's Cyberpunk world they live in, like I said Johnny Mnemonic isn't a very "good" film technically, but I still think its better in terms of its world and I wish I could of seen more from the franchise.
