talk about having a great apprenticeship, and then he was able to like get paid to get the tutelage of the great George Jones how he used his voice. I saw Merle Haggard sick in the last 2 months of his life, same i was amazed hoe he used his voice

Oh he was MAD!!!! I had to sit my guitar down and run out the stage door around the building through policeman and traffic through the front door. Tell them who I was & get to the soundman and tell him to cut it off. He was pissed!

I have never seen Johnny Paycheck play the bass before. Every other clip I have ever seen he is playing a regular guitar. He was actually a very good bass player. These guys all make playing look so effortless, great musicians. Great song.

Lets get this strait. Paul Wayne did not work for George Jones, ever. I worked for George in the sixties along with my two brothers, Don and Gary Adams. We took Paul with us a time or two. Paul Angel started Donny Young/aka/ Paycheck in the music field in Greenfield, Oh. George influenced Paycheck and Paycheck influnced us. Paul Wayne did give me a start as his drummer. I will always give him credit for that.

I was blessed enough to play guitar in his band October 1993. It was John,his brother Jeff Little on guitar,myself on guitar,Dean Townsend bass guitar,Hank Miles drums,Dennis Russell piano, & the great Walter Haynes on Steel Guitar. Greatest experience ever! He could sing every song a little differently each night & every single version would make your hairs stand up. Especially when we did Old Violin & In memory of a memory. R.I.P.

mr. dawgbone, i have to agree that george was an established artist long before john, But, the great thing about being able to share info with the people who were there during the developing days of a great style, Here's what was said, george was singing more like Hank until john came along, george started changing his style when paycheck became part of him. i got to hear these great stories from the people who were there. not from a book or an opinion of someone who never knew george or john.

there has been times writers for books, etc. have tried to get john to say that he influenced george, but they never got that out of him, i know because i was there! i have heard him say that he learned a lot from george, and if i were to listen to people like Darrell Mccall, Don Adams, Cliff Parker, Jim Vest, they say george would try to throw john when singing harmony, john was so good at what he did by staying with him it developed a style. thats just one small piece of the style conversation

Willie Nelson played a Baldwin guitar.....well until a drunk stepped on it, that was 1969 and it’s replacement was his Martin N-20 known as trigger! Of course he fitted trigger with the pickup from the destroyed Baldwin and let’s just say that the rest of the story is honky tonk history.

Sonny Curtis on the steel is not the Sonny Curtis who played with Buddy Holly. This one was from my hometown of Chillicothe, which also hosted Johnny as a guest for several years. Charlie Justice, the fiddle player, also played on some Connie Smith records, and I have a CD of him playing in a band called Slim Starr and the Nighthawks in Columbus back in the '60s. They play a couple of George Jones songs. Quite a tight Ohio network of country musicians it seems.

In the 70s and early 80s I had a band playing the European circuit. We backed and fronted many touring recording stars. We played with johnny on all his tours. He and Dave Dudley were our favorites. Just down home fun and natural people. May he rest in peace.

Imagine my surprise at seeing Danny Williams as the host of this particular clip! for those that did't grow up in Oklahoma City, Danny was a radio and tv legend from the late 1940's till around the late 2000's. I was Danny's sidekick on the KOMA morning radio show in the 90's, he was one of the greats in the business. He's since passed on as has Johnny Paycheck. Wow, what a great clip! And probably one of my favorite songs from Johnny Paycheck. Thank you to whoever posted this, you made my day!

Some years ago Koch started a reissue programme of the Little Darlin' catalogue with the promise of putting all the material out on CD. They released some Johnny Paycheck, some Bobby Helms and then for some reason it stopped. There was a suggestion of financial problems at Koch, but it was a great pity the programme was not followed through. What was put out was excellent.

Amber, you are correct about Johnny being Baldwin guy... but that is not a Baldwin Bass he is playing here. Baldwins featured either a "batwing" headstock or a modified "violin scroll" headstock. Here is a picture of him with his Baldwin Virginian 550 a model also owned by Willie, Jerry Reed and Lenny Breau. (and me)
