We humans are far from perfect. I think some songs, like this one, come pretty close to perfection. It tells a story that a great many of us understand, and have felt. It takes us along on an imperfect journey, and then drops us off on a note of forgiveness, and hope for the future. What more could you ask from a song?

Yeah, this song is about a girl who made a mistake, and he is trying to ask her if she 1) learned her lesson, 2) is really sorry and 3) if she plans on staying. As others have said, loving someone includes forgiveness, even when it hurts. He was doing the right thing though by asking her what her intentions were. That was to protect himself.

I think Dominika’s interpretation was correct. His girlfriend was probably young and learning about relationships and hopefully after rejection by the rich guy knows that money doesn’t guarantee good character. She couldn’t kiss him yet because she felt she wasn’t worthy of his love but he’s telling her that she still is. Also the female singers I think are what he’s thinking in his head. This is my positive interpretation of the lyrics.
@ToddSauve7 ай бұрын
Actually, she wanted to kiss him now and make up for her mistake but Johnny is cautious about it initially. "How can you tell me how much you miss me, when the last time I saw you, you wouldn't even kiss me?" That is my take on it. But I could be wrong. It has always been my favourite from Johnny Rivers.

You seem very close and respect each other it seems, very much a couple I think who love each other and a kind of match I never found in my lifetime. I envy watching the both of you interact. I am not complaining, just that I never found that, married once for 14 years, it ended and never did find the girl. LOL, they say it is never to late but honestly life is getting late for me and I am not really looking anymore. I was 11 years old when this song came out. Been one of my favorite go to songs still whenever I hear it. Wasn't a huge Johnny Rivers fan, rest of his music to me was so so, but this one was a homerun for me.

It is a marvel of singing, production and musicianship. Sorry the first part of the story upset you Andrei. But like a book or a movie, a song must be heard to the end before you can render a verdict on it. And we have to make room for forgiveness in our hearts and lives or it will turn into a very bitter experience. We don't want to allow one mistake, even a big one, to rob us of what may be a very big blessing like a good wife. 💖💖💖

Words in parenthesis/brackets simply denotes words sung by someone other than the main singer, such as "back-up singers. For example, the main singer will a sing a line followed by back-up singers or duet partner singing "La la la" it will be written as ... I feel so happy! (La la la) In this song, even though the words in parenthesis are words that the male character in the song would be saying, is sung by female voices for a more melodic effect. Because Johnny Rivers himself is not singing those words they are placed in parenthesis. I and a lot of other guys have found out too late that we were nothing more than a "temporary back-up plan" until someone better came along". That is why so many male commenters are SO envious of Andrei for finding someone like Dominika, who knows what true love and being faithful is.

It's interesting when a song hits a nerve and we're triggered emotionally, for whatever reason. The fear of losing the attentions and affections of the one you love is a very real awareness. For some of us, we have lost in love and we have to deal with it as best we can. The possibility of losing one's love is also a challenging thing because it brings out insecurities we have about ourselves in those relationships. Nobody is perfect. I think this song encapsulates the very real experiences we go through in our love lives and I can appreciate how the two of you reacted so differently. Music is a healer, but also a revealer. We must be aware of how our egos can be played with, toying with our true spirits. Bless you both and thank you. : )

Let's get this couple to introduce us to the music they listened to in their "formative years". And then we, the uniformed audience, can provide OUR REACTIONS. This would be so much more interesting and NEW, rather than listening to the comments they have on music mostly alien to them. How many more reactions to we have to muddle through from teenagers who never heard the Beatles, or people raised in foreign lands about Bobby Darin/Joe Cocker/The Band/Cat Stevens/Simon & Garfunkel, etc. Start a new trend for heaven's sake.

She left him for a rich guy. The rich guy dumped her. Why? If she was special - honest, sincere, attentive, giving - then that rich guy would not have dumped her. Andrei is absolutely correct. Oh Andre, cheer up, it's just a song. I doubt that after half a dozen hits Johnny Rivers was writing from personal experience about being on the poor side of town. I'm also not sure what town he might be talking about. Does Los Angeles actually have a poor side? I think there's a rich side, and then an almost rich side, and then a middle class side and then a working class side, and maybe a poor-for-LA-side. (That's just a guess, I don't know if Johnny Rivers actually lived in LA, but you get my point.)
