He and Donnie are both very good souls! I have had the pleasure of meeting Donnie a few times, and meeting Johnny wants. But I have seen Johnny with Lynyrd Skynyrd in concert. And I was usually in the front. I am blind and he gave me his hat a few different times, right after singing Freebird. So I have a few of his hats. They are some of the most hospitable, warm, nice guys you could ever want to meet. I’ve met my share of celebrities, but they stand out because of how down to earth and warm they truly are. Not saying that other people weren’t, just saying that they really stand out because of those qualities that they have.

But Johnny in particular because I work security at concerts and he was the only star that I laughed and interacted with. They are exactly right. They are honoring the fallen family members. So please, for you folks out there that still call them a tribute band, remember, most of these guys grew up together and are a part of the Skynyrd family. Let's enjoy them and the classic songs while they are still with us and doing it. One of the best things I feel about being famous is, you can do that. You can get new members and continue to keep the band alive. Julian and Shawn Lennon, singing dad's songs, Clapton, doing Cream songs, and so on. In my heart, they will always be Skynyrd, because a group of totally newcomers doing Skynyrd in a bar or club, would be a tribute band. Not a Van Zant himself. I only wish Donnie would have joined the group. How cool would that have been?

Especially when Johnny van Zant sang "Sweet Home Alabama" a few times in stage now, which.... was a famed tribute to those who were born in Alabama like the comedian and voice actor Maxwell Emmett Buttram (who was born in Addison on Juneteenth of 1915). Let's stop the tribute band nonsense, the not Ronnie, Allen, or Stevie comparisons, and remember, these guys all grew up together four hours from where I made my home for the last thirty three years, Winter Haven, Fl and remember that they are all a part of the Skynyrd family and have been there since the beginning, before they were rock stars so to speak, because these guys are better musicians and down to earth good old country boys who will take the time to talk to you as if you were the president of the United States, and doing what they know and love, music, and doing what we want them to do, keep the Skynyrd boys looking down on us proud and thankful for keeping their names and music alive. @@slabbusterrtr7690 People forget that Ronnie had an iron fist, literally. He was not only the singer and the frontman of Skynyrd, he was the Conductor. The Maestro. Johnny likely feels more pressure from his memory than any other entity to give it his all. They don't and will never compare in song. Ronnie was a bluesman in a rock n' roll band, Johnny is actually a rock n' roll singer and it shows in post-crash Skynyrd songs. But I think Ronnie would be proud.

History shows that great songs/music of all genres will always outlive the composers/writers/musicians/performers, bands. Here's just a few...Bach, Mozart, Francis Scott Key, Sinatra, Cash, Holly, Valens, Elvis, Berry, Hendrix, Edward Van Halen, etc...too many to name. It is an honorable human endeavor to carry on the worlds greatest artistry. This is why we have museums for physical works of art and inventions that changed the world and inspired future generations to share our creators human gifts given to us all in some form or another.

Man, they just made my stomach flipped when he said we may have been to a funeral with "Free Bird" playing and I DID. My dear friend David Bosler had free bird play, and I remember it playing over and over as we waited for his service to begin. I remember also that when it stopped playing and it was quite, we could hear a few of the older women said, "Whew... I'm glad that's over" and we just cuckled!

Johnny Van Zant didn't even mention Artimus Pyle at the beginning of the interview, he listed all the original members from 1987 except this one, which shows that they are not in the best relationship ... Artimus left the band in 1991, and in a recent interview I think it's about 5-6 years after the interview says he and he made a band by his name, and that no one has the right to use the name lynryd skynryd mentioning that ronnie van zant was the soul and heart of this band, it may be true that this band did not have the charm of that period but I personally respect johnny van zant for the work and striving he has shown over the last 32 years.

He also didn’t mention Ed almost at all until the recent year or two after he past. It was better than It is with Artimus but their was still some tension their. Ed was very honest and said some things about Johnny over the years I’m sure he didn’t like. But Johnny is still a good guy, good ol boy like his brothers, Ed was that way to. He respects Ronnie and also puts his own persona on stage, that I have nothing but the utmost respect

Hell yes, Johnny had the right to use the name Lynyrd Skynyrd. He's Ronnie's brother.

When Allen in87 got sick skynyrd should have retired this is not skynyrd should be called tribute band. Sorry but those are the facts. This is a money grab. They will continue without rossington and justify it. U will see

Johnny. . . Your brother himself would have chosen you . . . Your the closest thing to Ronnie that could even stand a chance of being the lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd .. . And you got nothing but my respect for stepping up and doing this job . . . You've got to have some big balls to try and fill Ronnie Van zant shoes . . But you have done a damn good job and that's says alot . . . Lynyrd Skynyrd is forever . !!!!

Ronnie was a scrapper, football player, and even some boxing, all of you dissing on his little brother ! I think he would slap you upside the head for that, Johnny has had a successful career without Lynyrd Skynyrd. If you think he's just doing it for the money, you're a moron. I am personally very thankful and grateful to all those that have stepped up and continue on. What a blessing .

I don't think Ronnie would mind at all that his brother is singing his songs. He obviously loved his family, especially his daddy. What I wish is that they would have made a slight name change so we would know if it was original stuff with Ronnie at the helm or otherwise. I would have changed it to Lynyrd Skynyrd II.

Very true. That's the biggest point that so many overlook. It's NOT Lynyrd Skynyrd, it's the Tribute Band. They followed the agreed-upon protocol when they decided on the 10 city Tribute Tour in 1987. That expanded until early 1989. The Skynyrd II name was adopted by Allen, he even had the artwork created. Artimus said the band even tentatively agreed upon "Mylvyn Skyrydyr". I soooooo wish they just did the right thing and properly renamed it. I'd be a bigger fan.

I love Skynyrd especially the original lineup and I don’t agree with all the bad press Johnny and the new guys have got I think they should continue to play under the Skynyrd name for as long as people are buying tickets and buying albums. It was tragic what happened but if people still want to see them play i say rock on
@ThomasSchoellerFineArtPhotos
@ThomasSchoellerFineArtPhotos 3 жыл бұрын
There was a bit more to it than that :) :) and btw, Johnny doesn't get 'bad press". The harsh criticism derives from other facts tied to RVZ, Allen Collins, Artimus and other witnesses. 3/13/1978 the survivors decided upon and signed an agreement that the band's name never be used again. Don't you think even for a minute, that the group of musicians touring under that name isn't fleecing the people that purchased tickets? No disrespect to them as musicians or as humans at all. I say "rock on" too, but rock on using a different name or be more direct about calling it the Tribute Band.

Its sad people dont understand its his own brother for f sake. Of course he isnt trying to replace his own brother. If it was for me and i was Ronnie and i died. The first i wanted was to let my brothers carry on what i started. Some bands they get replaced singers. Hell better let it be the brothers. Brothers 4 life. We are also 3 brothers at home i can sure ass hell tell you if my big brother knew folks talking crap about me he would give em hell.

RIP to Gary Rossington. This lineup was the best tribute band to Lynyrd Skynyrd. The rest of them that try to dress like the original guys are just clowns. I saw Skynyrd for the only time in 2006. It was a dream come true. At least it was a Van Zant singing instead of somebody else, which is good enough for me.
