Simple, it seems the car has lost it's intended position for some reason, some sort of spawn error. but the game knows which space it's supposed to be on which is clearly on the other side of the map. when a player is supposed to move forward, it seems it must enter a rail on the left side of the road. usually this would be straight beside the car allowing the car to simply home straight into it without ever worrying about pathfinding. at that point it follows this rail until it passes the last space before it's destinattion space and then snaps into the right rail and stops at the destination space. Because the game assumes the car is always right besides this left rail, it has no pathfinding and will drive straight into it like a homing missile. because the game thinks the car is on the other side of the map, the car takes the shortest route possible driving straight through the map to enter the left lane as it is supposed to. after that, it follows the lane as it normally would and the camera movement shows it is following the left lane indeed, you can tell it is turning at the right moments. the reason its invisible is presumably because it has snapped to the bottom of the map, there was presumably no ground inside the mountain so the car likely snapped straight to the bottom of the map. the camera seems to only follow the car's x and y cordinates, but not Z so the camera always mantains the same height. It seems the game only accounts for x and y cordinates for the waypoints that the cars follow so the game doesn't care that the car is underground, you can see the car is counted as on the space it was trying the land on even though it is underground. the reason the blue void is there is just because it's the skybox of the level as you can see in some cutscenes.

Writers did so because of their very crappy benefits, low pay and over all horrible jobs. I was wrong about it being from the early 2000s though. Television channels needed to still show something though so they improvised, with the popularity of reality tv shows being one of the biggest results of this. The strike was a success and costed the entertainment industry around 1 or 2 billion dollars in opportunity costs and was a long term success.

If I recall correctly, the point of the game isn't to complete rounds but to collect friends. First person to 3 friends is the winner and laps is related to how many laps there are in certain minigames. I don't remember how you're supposed figured that out (I used to play the hell out of this game with my sister as kid actually) but I do remember that being the pre-requisite.
