The Zero Project Romhack is the ideal version of X3, you can play Zero whenever you want and he can use the boss moves as well. It also fixes the charge shot X had in X3 and makes it much better.

Actually, X and Zero had clashing ideals in X3, but that was explained in the game's manual, X feels guilty for killing Mavericks who where just inocent robots before they became infected, but for Zero, it's just another mission that he have to complete. (yeah that should be told in the actual game but it is a thing)

ZeoLightning ZP 4.0 changes the upgrades. In 4.0, Dr. Light tells Zero that he can't install X's upgrades to him, in exchange for the ability to air dash and double jump right off the bat. Black Zero is changed as well.

Yeah... I didn't bring up that X3 was outsourced so you could go easy on it, but rather so that the blame for all of the game's failings would go to the right team of developers. Although, if you want to be completely fair, Capcom really shouldn't be excused of any guilt since they outsourced the project to begin with when they could have handled it themselves. There is one thing I think X3 does great and it's how you can get most upgrades by taking a route that doesn't exploit the bosses' weaknesses. Had the game been better designed, it would've been a subtle but meaningful way of rewarding the player for their skill and learning the game. Also, and I know you don't really give a shit, but did you know that the script for X2 was changed a lot more for the English release beyond removing the whole Serges is Dr. Wily thing? For instance, instead of cornering the last of Sigma's rebellion, the intro stage is just another routine mission. The X-Hunters all have distinct personalities: Violen is full of himself, thinks X is no big deal and even addresses himself in the third person; Agile appears calm and collected, but he's actually pretty emotional and his temper tends to flare up when things don't go his way; and Serges talks like an old man. There is also no talk of a unification of some sort - that is something the translation made up for reasons I'll never know. Also, when you beat Agile in the X-Hunter stages, he calls Sigma by name rather than just calling him master, and when you beat the boss rush, Sigma tells X outright to meet him at the Central Computer, the Central Computer being Magnas Centipede's stage, hence why you end up going back there. There are other smaller details, but those are really the most meaningful changes.

To clear up any confusion, Zero was the final creation of Dr. Wily before death, intended to surpass the original Mega Man in every way. Only, for some ODD reason, things didn't really work out so Wily sealed Zero away along with the Maverick Virus that would become a central theme of the X series. Apparently, the virus itself leaked from Zero's stasis pod, causing Reploids to become Maverick. Sigma was originally created to be immune to the virus itself, but when he had a run-in with a Maverick Zero, a program Dr. Wily embedded somewhere in the "W" emblem of Zero's helmet was triggered. Said program was designed to turn whatever robot defeated Zero into the new seeker of global domination, ensuring he'd always have the stronger robot. Only, Sigma evolved into a computer virus himself. Reason a confrontation between X and Zero was hinted at was because as long as any trace of Dr. Wily, even his creations, remain in existence, true peace between man and machine can't be achieved.

Not just the X-Hunter fights, the route taken in Any% is nearly 100% (as Johnny mentioned, you can get the upgrades in whatever order you please, so routing isn't an absolute nightmare) since they go straight for the shoryuken. And unlike the Hadoken, you don't have to go through some arbitrary nonsense to hope for the capsule to appear, it's right there for the player to take.

10:57 - I can explain that; it's part in reason as to why it was kinda hard for me to like the soundtrack of the game too. It's simply because the composer this time around used too much vibrato on every other note in the song for the leads, instead of spacing out their use in order to make their appearance welcoming and satisfying rather than persistent and annoying. When too much vibrato is used, it not only belittles the value and color it can inflict on a good sounding lead, but it can also make the song's chemistry lack the proper amount of power it should present for such a game of this calibre. Speaking of, Mega Man 4's soundtrack actually did the same thing where they over-abused vibrato events in the trackers.

MMX3 is honestly one of my personal favorites in the series, but I do think MMX1 is the superior game and that Johnny brought up a few good points. Maybe a bit harsh in some areas, but overall nothing I could truly disagree on (RNG appearances of Bit & Byte, ride armors, etc).

Well, the Nightmare police, which is what Bit and Byte are classified as, aren't 100% RNG on when you fight them. They work like the X-hunters in X2; they only start showing up after 2 Maverick stages, and Bit will randomly appear during your 3rd, 4th, or 5th stages, with Byte appearing on your 6th, 7th, or 8th stages.

The way I rate a game's OST is by asking myself "how many tracks do I find myself listening to casually?" Megaman X - Opening Stage, Boomer Kuwanger, Sigma Stage 1 and 2 Megaman X2 - Opening Stage, X Hunter Stage, Zero Megaman X3 - Opening Stage, Gravity Beetle, Volt Catfish, Doppler's Lab 1, Vile Stage Technically by that somewhat arbitrary scale X3 actually has my favorite soundtrack. Though notably my favorite track out of all the above is X2's opening stage. I seem to have a thing for the hard games, because I also love Megaman & Bass and even like more tracks from that game than any of the X games. Could be the fact I play the games on a keyboard..?

Personally, MegaMan X3 is my personal favorite in the series. While the game is hard I never found it unfair. I actually enjoy the weapons because I find creative ways to utilize them. The enhancement chips and alternate ways to defeat bit, byte and Vile and the effects the have in the end stages add a ton of replay value. Finally I just love the flow the game has, like when you're suped up and ready to take on anything it feels amazing. You're entitled to your own opinion I'm just laying out mine and if you want to hear more of my opinions of individual parts of X3 I have a let's play of it on my channel.

The idea is that the golden chip was meant to be some kind of super secret, while at least the helmet upgrade confirms in-game that there are four "????" upgrades to be found. Dr Light then warns you that if you take one, you can't use the others, so the player would be forgiven for thinking "wow... there's your replay value." Plus, even if you somehow find the hidden room by accident, the capsule for the golden chip won't even be there if you don't meet the conditions.

The way the X Hunters appear in X2 can be manipulated, to an extent. You can't choose where they appear, but you do control if and when they stop appearing. If you enter a stage that doesn't have an X Hunter and dedeat the Maverick, all the remaining X Hunters will just move to other stages. However, if you enter a stage where an X Hunter is present, and you defeat that stage's Maverick without defeating the X Hunter, then that particular X Hunter will no longer show up for you to challenge, while the other remaining X Hunter(s) will randomly choose another stage in which to wait for you. And (if I remember correctly) if you don't like where the X Hunters are at the moment you can simply game over and return to the stage select and they will all randomly choose a new stage to inhabit. The simple rule to keep in mind is that if you enter a stage with an X Hunter, make sure to defeat him before taking on the boss or you will miss that opportunity.

Hostius Hostilius I know, this isn't the first X2 review on which I've had to explain this. It's really odd, because if you just pay attention it's pretty easy to figure out, yet so many people seem to overlook it and just deem it as "some random uncontrollable" part of the game. The devs were pretty smart to implement it the way they did, because it still allows players to manipulate it just enough to be able to play the boss order they want while still getting Zero's parts.

Yeah X3 has a special place in my heart too. I understand it´s faults and see that the soundtrack does not click for everyone. I love it. Almost every part of it. I think my history with Megaman Zero made me love high difficulty Megaman.

I wholeheartedly recommend Justin3009's Zero Project romhack, it's a delightful way to revisit Mega Man X3 which includes not only Zero without handicaps, but also various bug fixes, game design fixes, localization touch-ups and even reworking the game to utilize ACTUAL SAVES. That's badass!

WesleyB Crowen Actually 1- zero can use a few new upgrades that barely make a difference. 2- "zero without handicaps" he can fight bosses now and nothing else, and he's too OP he defeats them easily. 3- "ACTUAL SAVES" doesn't mean much when emulators already provide that. 4-Why are you complaining about zero in MMX3? This is a prototype of his gameplay. After that he's fully playable in all later games and gets his own megaman zero series.

Oh boy. 1. Air dashing as Zero is great, thanks Dr. Light. Not that he needed it but it's convenient that he collects parts for X just like in X5/6. 2. His Z-Saber got nerfed to account that, so he's not THAT OP like he potentially is in vanilla. The thing also fixes a major annoyance in that the player is no longer forced to switch to X (who most likely going to have very little health) every single damn time the player approaches the door, making coursing through the stages just a bit smoother. 3. Emulators, huh. But what about the actual system (running through sd2snes)? The fact that a romhack added the ability to manually store a save in a game that had you type numbers on a notepad before is very impressive and convenient. Or you'll also say Game Saver Plus by Nakitek is just as accessible for your savestates on an actual snes? 4. ... where in my comment did I complain about Zero?

WesleyB Crowen 1- x and zero play very similar why does it matter who gets upgrades? I guess because zero's stronger at the beginning. 2- they nerfed it because of its massive damage. He still makes bosses easier which i agree is better for those who didn't like how hard bosses were. 3- i actually don't care about that, super mario world on the snes lets you save the game, doesn't matter to me if a romhack does it but its a very nice addition indeed. 4- i'll correct my self, i meant others who complained about him and said this romhack made it alot better, to me it didn't make much difference.

I really enjoyed X2, not as awesome as the first one but still a good sequel that built on the original. X3 on the other hand, it did add new things but idk I just found annoying. The soundtrack took a nose dive, the difficulty was more frustrating, and it was just a bit forgettable.

Megaman X2 is my favorite in series. Johnny forget to mention, or probably didn't noticed, that some of the special weapons have extra environmental effects. You can control the weather in Wire Sponge's stage by using weapons in the orbs. Silk Shot completely changes to reflect the stage's theme.

I love X2 as well. My few complaints is how some of the Light Capsules or other invertory placement are set up that are kinda annoying to get to & you have to backtrack to get those certain items once u get the Mavericks weapon that is required. And the fight with the X Hunters to get Zero's body isn't worth it since you'll be fighting them at the Fortress levels anyway & get Zero back unless you don't wonna fight them. X1; at the least, that if you followed the orders right for inventories, u can only backtrack once to get an item Chill Penguins to get the Heart Tank after getting Flame Mammoths & is a less of a chore. I don't count the Hadouken u get for the extra Capsule in Armored Amarillo since that's more of an reward if you get all the items or weapons in your inventory ( though dying to that stage 3 or 4 times is silly; but oh well ). Which is why I prefer X1 a little bit more since it's more safer & less chore than X2. But still. Even with those minor issues, X2 is still an fantastic game compared to X1 & an good follow up. Definitely in my top 3 favorites of the X series. Along with X1 & X4.

The SGB run of X3 years ago attempted to get the saber (but messed something up), so he's aware of it. Notably he also didn't elaborate on getting the Shoryuken in X2, and the Z Saber is basically X3's equivalent. Eh, sometimes these things just slip the mind.

There's a romhack for Megaman X3 called "Zero Project" which slightly updates game balance, and, what's more important, makes Zero properly playable character. He can get boss weapons, some upgrades and some more. Good romhack that makes MMX3 actually pretty good, though it's not as good as MMX or MMX2

On the subject of going fast in X3: Strike Blade is the key but you have to take into account its short range where the 2 blades reverse directions. Hitting most enemies with both blades results in a 1-hit KO.

12:01 to 14:02 To be honest, I really don't see how people think that the SNES music of Mega Man X3 is more better than the PSX version of Mega Man X3. The SNES version of X3 mostly uses one instrument (the Guitar), and like Jonny said, it can be ear grating and repetitious. While the PSX version of X3 sounds like it was put with a lot of good effort instruments and very cool modern sound effects.

Killing Vile in the first encounter (with his weakness) in X3 is one of the three requirements for how you get the Z-Saber from Zero (the others being not dying as Zero and using Zero at the 2nd Fortress' Mini-boss).

I personally really enjoy how the weapons in X3 are actually functioning to counter the maverick that is weak to them. Not just in resetting their AI, but actually functioning against them. A few examples: Toxic Seahorse always jumps towards you, the icycle shot stays in place after you fire it for a second, allowing you to make him land on it while doding out of the way. Works similiar with Volt Catfish. Tunnel Rhino always stays on the ground and charges at you, so you have to jump over him from the wall. Toxic Seahorse's weapon archs down, so you can shoot it while jumping over him to still hit him. Neon Tiger always has the perfect height at the wall to get hid by returning spinning blades. Gravity Beetle always jumps towards you, and he doesn't jump too high, making the ray splasher's pretty narrow range usable. Crust Crawfish wants to be right in your face. Triad Thunder lets you stop him from doing that. I know it kinda destroys the boss battle, but it's something I really enjoy. Unlike Megaman 5 where the Power Stone hits absolutely nothing or Mighty Number 9 where some boss weapons just put you in a disadvantage.

Dammit Valentine, why do I keep seeing you pop up? Anyway, when you put it that way, the weapons seem kind of.... okay? I seem to have this problem where, outside of very specific weapons (read: Metal Blade), I never found them to be worth using with regularity, and X3 is no exception. Not counting how they trivialize bosses, I just found them too clunky. The only ones I enjoyed using were the Spinning Blade, Triad Thunder, and maybe the Frost Shield (only in the Zero Project mod though, which thankfully makes it and the Tornado Fang fast enough to be viable). The real stinkers in particular were the Parasitic Bomb, which was lame to use outside of its charged form, and the Gravity Well, which was just bad.

Honestly, X1 was the only game where I could see myself using a majority of the weapons, even if that mostly boiled down to the Fire Wave and Storm Tornado. X2's weapons were a bit finicky and underwhelming as well, but it also holds the Crystal Hunter, one of my favorite weapons, so it's fine.

Actually, the X3 weapons in general are miles better than the ones in X2 and X4. They're not as good as the X1 weapons, but there's not a single weapon that I didn't see myself using outside of weaknesses besides Gravity Well.

Best thing about Johnny's style of review is that he's modest and NOT full of himself the way some others are. I know he doesn't like X3 but he doesn't come across as a "this game sucks and you suck too" steamroller. All of us here in the comments who are saying we like X3? "Repetitive enemies" Thank you for mentioning this, it's my biggest problem with the game and no one seems to mention it. Stages in X3 just all bleed together in my memory because there's basically only four trash mobs that you run into over and over. X5 and X6 get the most shit for being indicative of the franchise's downward trend, and I think those are pretty crappy X games, but man at least their worst decisions were spectacularly memorable. Meanwhile X3 is sitting over here being the just most forgettable frigging entry to the series.

Also, just heads up for those who are probably not in the know, but in X2, you don't *have* to break your route to encounter the X-Hunters. Their limit is based upon whether or not there are two more Mavericks as Johnny has stated or if you failed to defeat one in a stage and got a game over in that same stage. You can actually reset their patterns by going back into the stage that activated them and leave to put one on the next Maverick the recently acquired weapon you gained works on. Just a heads up.

I have a physical copy of X3 from my dad. And I’ve had it for as long as I can remember. It was my introduction to the series and why I love Megaman X as much as I can. My favorite song in Megaman as a whole is Zero’s theme from 3 and the opening theme from the same game.
