The Zebeth name might have been a mistranslation due to the "th" phenome in Japanese sounding like the English phenome "s". The Localizers might have assumed it was supposed to be Zebeth rather than Zebes due to this. It's the same mixup that caused Aerith of Final Fantasy VII to be originally known as Aeris. When such words using the "th" sound are romanized, they are often written with an "s" rather than "th".

The one thing that this game made me learn that has helped me in every single other Metroid game is to jump and then move while you're doing the platforms because of you jump without moving she's far more controllable are doing left-to-right when you're wanting to jump more up then over so whenever I'm in the vertical shaft I always jump and then move which greatly increases my control

2 of the main reasons (maybe I have more, but I'm not enough sure) of wanting this re-review were: 1-see if I learn more ways/tips to play better this game, and hopefully being less painful. 2- the Screw Attack I can't say that happened as I originally wanted, but I knew that things don't use to be as expected. And still was a good video. Can't say how should be a flawless video, but I don't need to complain this time. Happy 35th year for metroidvaniers and players in general. Have a good time.

I did some reverse engineering of the password system of my own and devised this fun little password: 000000 000023 WFy000 000002. I call it the Tourian Swimsuit Challenge. This starts you in Tourian with only the ice beam, swimsuit and 255 missiles. Since you don't have any missile pickups, they won't show on the HUD, though they are still usable. And of course backtracking is impossible since you don't have morphball. At least not without entering brinstar and using a fast reset. I could've set the "maru mori taken" bit to punish that with a softlock, but if you're gonna escape tourian just to fight mother brain, you might as well be doing a normal playthrough. This is extremely fucking difficult, two hits from basically any enemy is enough to kill you at full health, which also means you have to farm the metroids in the first room for a bit to get enough health to not be one-shotted by a spaghetti-o on entering the second room. Also, saying that the password is game code is not accurate. The variables may be in a memory cluster that gets overwritten with the data in the password (and even if it were just that simple, it still wouldn't be game code--setting some variables does not mean modifying machine instructions), but the password is also encrypted (byte 17: shift), checksummed (byte 18: sum) and base64'd (18 bytes -> 24 characters), meaning the game cannot simply "throw it into memory" and make it work. The password has to be decoded, rearranged into 18 bytes of data, checksum-validated, and decrypted before the game can use it to set variables. Wanna see what conversion to base64 looks like in a C-compatible language? buffer[0] = alphabet[ (dataptr[0] & 0xFC) >> 2 ]; buffer[1] = alphabet[ ((dataptr[0] & 0x03) > 4) ]; buffer[2] = alphabet[ ((dataptr[1] & 0x0F) > 6) ]; buffer[3] = alphabet[ dataptr[2] & 0x3F ]; WOOF! That's not a direct memory map at all! Look at all those complex bit manipulation operations! You better have a strong understanding of bitwise operators and hexadecimal if you wanna reason about this. This is because you are taking 8-bit values and rearranging them to be 6-bit values, but since 6-bit bytes aren't a thing, you still have to fit those 6-bit values into 8-bit containers, so you have to make sure it gets formatted right. 3 8-bit values map to 4 6-bit values evenly XXXXXXXX--XXXXXXXX--XXXXXXXX [AAAAAA][BB--BBBB][CCCC--CC][DDDDDD] which has to become 00AAAAAA 00BBBBBB 00CCCCCC 00DDDDDD so you have to AND mask with specific bit patterns to isolate the bits you want, shift them so they're in the correct place, and OR them with bits from other bytes. This gives you a 30% longer sequence of bytes that you can then map into a custom alphabet of 64 symbols to represent it legibly (hence why it's called base64). Metroid uses `0-9A-Za-z?-` as its alphabet, while standard base64 uses `A-Za-z0-9+/`. The encryption is twofold: the 17th "shift" byte and the space character. The shift byte is used to determine how to shift the bits around, which encrypts the data, so setting it to zero results in no encryption. If I understand it right, it will shift the first 16 bits to the right SHIFT times, rotating any bits that fall off to the left side. The space character is an anomaly in that unlike `-`, which represents the 6-bit value 111111 (63), is an 8-bit value 255, and it will "overflow" into previous character's last two bits replacing them with 1's. My guess is that when the game is outputting the password, it looks to see if the pattern "11--111111" is found at the boundary between any two characters (chr[x] & 3 && chr[x+1] & 3F), and if so, replaces it with a space, making "3-" and "0_" identical. I haven't seen the game generate any passwords with spaces in them, though, so it might just be unimplemented. I did not bother to implement encryption in my password generator. So my explanation of the shift encryption could be wrong on the direction and/or which bytes are rotated. Personally I find the prospect of encrypting a password system silly when the player is unlikely to be able to reverse engineer it by just looking at the passwords regardless of encryption, and if someone is knowledgeable/determined enough to reverse engineer it by either disassembling the ROM or putting in hours upon hours of R&D to figure out what each bit does, encrypting won't stop them anyway. And on that note, I'm surprised nobody knows what the 12 unknown bits are to this day, you'd think somebody who knows his 6502 would have disassembled the game and figured it out by now, alluding to unimplemented features or something. The checksum is very simple: add the first 17 bytes together MOD 255 and store it in byte 18. There are TONS of possible collisions. The checksum is the only thing that separates invalid passwords from valid passwords, and it takes up the last 2 characters of the password (the second to last character holds the last 4 bits of the shift byte and the first 2 bits of the checksum byte), which is why ENGAGE RIDLEY MOTHER FUCKER is a valid password despite the fact that it crashes the game. The sum in "ER" happens to match the sum of the bytes in "ENGAGE RIDLEY MOTHER FUCKE". The reason this password crashes the game is because of the 9th byte of the password (which I confusingly call byte 8 in my documentation because I start from zero). This byte's last three bits define the starting location, ranging from 0-7 (000-111). Only problem is the game only has 5 valid locations (0-4), and those locations are, respectively, Brinstar, Norfair, Kraid, Tourian, and Ridley. Location IDs 5-7 are invalid, and ENGAGE RIDLEY MOTHER FUCKER sets the location ID to one of those invalid locations, which, since the game wasn't programmed to handle those room IDs, means the game gets put in an unpredictable state. In the general sense, it crashes, but it can do different things depending on hardware, the exact layout of the cart ROM, the state of the PRNG and other long-running memory segments that vary with time, the frame you press enter on, the accuracy of the emulator (if emulated), and other things.
