Regarding Samus losing all her equipment at the start of every game, I always just headcanoned it to be that Chozo weaponry has an expiration date. They were a peaceful, nomadic race, but their weaponry is something to be feared. So maybe the equipment permanently deactivates after a certain amount of time has passed or when the user leaves a certain planet. It's not a perfect explanation, but it's what I use.

@alfiehicks1

I've always assumed she just sells it. Can't imagine bounty hunting is a particularly lucrative business, so to keep financial security between contracts she just pawns off her recovered artefacts. The galaxy is supposed to be at peace, anyway. If we imagine there to be at least some stretch of time between Metroid 2 and this game, then we can assume that Samus doesn't need her equipment. To her knowledge, she totally eradicated the two biggest known threats to galactic peace - I doubt she ever thought she'd need to do any total extermination jobs again.

Also we straight up see the SAX using the abilities Samus lost. My favorite way this is used is how if the SAX catches you it shoots you with an ice beam and a super missle. In other words the same way you killed Metroids on previous games. Because the SAX sees Samus as a Metroid because on Fusion she is.

1:11 It's always nice to hear the mention of Yokoi. You could picture him as the head honcho for R&D1 Everyone knows he is Nintendo's Handheld godfather. But his role in R&D1 is what insisted on Kid Icarus, Metroid and even Wario Land to stil get games later on. Yamauchi trusted him so much and he was the first mentor for Miyamoto and other coworkers.

Yokoi-san also birthed the Mario Land trilogy, so we have him to thank for the wackiness we got in Wario games later on as well. We question a lot "why touch Mario Land?" With some good reason... but honestly, that was a cute experiment. It was bringing Mario to handheld (and Kid Icarus also was there. With Metroid too) and thanks to that, we got 2 later on and Wario Land.

“Not that Kenji Yamamoto, this Kenji Yamamoto. The one who didn’t plagiarize songs I still like listening to.” I’m not sure if this is exactly what you meant, BUT plagiarism aside, that Yamamoto’s original score for Dragon Ball Z Kai is absolutely stellar. When he got booked with plagiarism and they had to replace that score with the old DBZ score, a small part of me died inside… For anyone crazy enough to be interested, I still have the first 3 volumes of the funimation release of Kai which came out before they swapped out the score, and I am NEVER letting those babies go. From the mangled corpses in the opening screen, the bubbles in the lava after Crocomire is burnt to the bone to that little light spark at the end signifying the animals you saved before the Zebes explodes. Honestly as a beginner I really have a hard time with wall jumping in this game. Also I think it'd be cool if we had a Metroid game where Samus was to keep her arsenal from the last game and got new tools, with her now needing to use what she had from last game (maybe the first area could be dedicated to showing how they all work) along with the new tools such as a Grapple Beam upgrade that could pull enemies/objects to use as a flail, a drone to traverse small areas that the morph-ball can't get to or be in like a maze of electric seaweed for example, missiles that launch Samus back and she could use to rocket jump ala Soldier in TF2, etc. Then again that would be too much for newcomers to the series to get into.

Even though I only played it less than a decade ago and had more experience with the GBA and GC titles, Super Metroid is my favorite in the series for its atmosphere and hidden depth. That said, it's very hard to recommend to totally new players, especially those who aren't used to how metroid games are structured in general. Fairly recently, I saw a group of friends (like 8 or 9 people) try to play it for the first time (or the first time in over a decade at least) and over half of them either bounced off of it hard or at least struggled with learning the game due to the controls (Samus's jump/spin jump in particular) and a lack of affordances in areas like the bomb blocks in the elevator room to Norfair. Can't really blame them for bouncing off of it and I'm sure I looked up a guide more than once during my first playthrough. As much as I wanted to defend the game, I had to recognize that those flaws will stop quite a few players from getting deeper into this game.

I'm one of those guys too. I have a self imposed rule that I won't use walkthroughs, save states, or anything of the like the first time I go through any game. And without any guidance, I didn't even make it to wrecked ship on my first run of SM before putting it down. I never even gave it a second look because of how badly it pissed me off, until I saw the SM/Z3 rando at GDQ. I love LttP so as soon as I saw that I had a new randomizer to play I grabbed a guide and learned how to play SM and now I can say I like it. Still not a favorite of mine or anything, but just having the knowledge of what the game offers took it from a game that I loathed to one that I don't mind revisiting from time to time.

I grew up on Fusion and I’ve probably played that more than any other game to date. That being the case, I’ve tried and tried over and over again to beat Super Metroid. Fusion just refined so much of Samus’s moveset, not least of which being the ability to grab onto ledges and making the shinespark less finicky, that I have a hard time looking past what I consider some flaws. But now with Dread coming tomorrow, I’ve resolved to FINALLY finish this game, after which I’ll be following the mainline story (and my heart!) straight back into Fusion to fully set myself up for Dread :)

I believe it was my third attempt in my life and.. it clicked hard. The moment you get back to the surface of zebes and samus's theme starts playing, i was fully convinced this was one of the greatest games of all time. If you're having trouble getting into it, give it time and patience cause it's absolutely deserving of both.

If your wondering about the "is it just nostalgia" thing lemme say this: Im not the biggest fan of metroidvania games, this and aria of sorrow are the only ones ive ever completed. AND ive never had patience for any game before the ps1 era aside from a few exceptions. And even with all that, i played this game for the first time ever when it came out on switch a couple years back and absolutely loved it. It was so good, i genuinely think its one of the most well aged (i feel i could probably word that better...) games from that generation.

Similar case here, and I always mention that nostalgia bit to people. I hated Super Metroid as a kid, but about 6 years ago when I got back into gaming, I decided to complete it. It instantly became my favorite game, and remains so to this day. The nostalgia isn't there, it's just that damn good

Phantoon's attacks are based on what you hit him with (Super Missile, Missiles, etc.) and he's an incredible push over because you can just go through his flame wheel (his response to super missiles) using the charge beam spin attack (which for some reason just makes you ignore the attack and go through it.)

My theory is Samus has an emotional attachment towards her base suit. It's the one the Chozo initially gave her so she for the first few games she kept switching back to it. Later, she got over handicapping herself but fate keeps contriving ways that she's reset anyway.

As someone who is far younger than Johnny and didn’t play Super Metroid until very long after the Prime games were already available. I can say it absolutely holds up. I can maybe understand that it might feel a bit floaty to some people, but I really think you get used to it rather quickly, and the design of the game is still absolutely stellar. Give it a shot.

The one thing I'm not excited about that game is the control scheme. From what I heard, you can't use the dpad to move. A huge shame. I prefer a control scheme where you move with the dpad, free aim with the left analog stick, and switch aeon abilities with the right analog stick

This game was amazing. It's definitely one of the best games ever. No hand holding while still having a highly functional tutorial. It wasn't made to completely force you down a linear path, but it does have an intended path until you learn all kinds of tricks to pull off. And nothing in the game was designed to absolutely stop you from progressing in unintended ways. Not even game glitches due to weird programming issues or such like some of A Link to the Past's area skips.

Is it weird that this was my first Metroid game, even though I am terrible at video games, but I remembered really enjoying playing this game. In fact, it was one of my very first video game that I got to play. Super Metroid was just one of my favourite childhood games ever, along with super smash brothers melee. Even though my friend and I started playing this game around when the Wii came out, her sister just so happen to have a Super Nintendo, with that game. So we always took turns playing the game, by alternating who’s playing every time someone dies. My friend and I had a blast playing it since both of us love competing against each other, we just went all out, trying to see who can get the furthest, who can beat a boss the fastest, etc.

I was never much into metroid, I never really had access to many of the games or the time to play them. But I was replaying Super Metroid for a second full playthrough, and I discovered that if you are holding a full charge and go into morph ball, it drops about 5 bombs around you. I'm sure many already knew that, but I'm pretty much learning from scratch. I thought it was so cool to discover something like that.

Super is a game that I have SUCH conflicting opinions on. On one side: I absolutely love the stuff you can do in this game. Unintentional like the mockball or intentional like shinespark or walljumps. It's just fun to get through this game. ... but on the other side: I can't jive with the controls AND the weapon select system. Specially since I played this game AFTER Fusion and Zero Mission. Those games are just so snappy and satisfying to control, and for me that's the most important thing in a game, specially one where movement is as important as Metroid is. I also don't really like this game much visually. The atmosphere is amazing and most of the bosses look awesome, but again, I got spoiled by later games which made sound effects, visual effects and Samus sprite a lot more "in your face" and it makes Super look a bit meh in the end. Also I think the level design can be a bit dickish, nothing major but stuff Johnny mentioned like the sand in Maridia and other stuff like it... It can be a pain. But in the end, I always liked going back to this game, even if not as much as the GBA games or even Samus Returns. It's my least favorite of the "good" 2d Metroid games, but it's still a blast.

My biggest obstacle with this game is the wall jump. Whenever I get to the animals that try to teach me how to do it, I have to put the game down because I just can't do it. Even if Super isn't my favourite, (that would be Zero Mission) there is absolutely no denying that this is one of the most influential and important games ever made. That fact that so many games to this day are still modelled after Super just to go how much of an impact it has made.

I've never played a game so deep in its control scheme where you can pull off so many cool tricks. Personally, I only played Super Metroid for the very first time less than a year ago. I definitely think it holds up brilliantly and would recommend it as a first Metroid game. Being really shitty with the controls and slowly getting better at them is part of the experience of the first playthrough. Yeah, I couldn't get the hang of the wall jump. Yeah, shine sparking took me 3 tries to get a single one right. But the rush when I pulled them off was crazy. Absolutely love this game.

I find it interesting that you hesitate to recommend Super Metroid to new players. For one of my cousin’s birthdays, I bought the Wii Points for my little cousin’s Wii and DL’d Super Metroid specifically to his system for him. He was 13-14 at the time. I honestly think it speaks to the craftsmanship of a game when a child can pick it up for the first time almost 20 years after the initial release and fall in love with it. I would recommend Super Metroid to literally anyone with even a passing interest in video games in general.

I relate to Johnny's, "Am I too old?" when discussing whether a game has problems or not. I grew up with PS1 RPGs, I was fucking spoiled by the golden age of RPGs to the point that I just can't enjoy RPGs today because, in my eyes, they're not as good. Yet when I play something like Chrono Cross and someone points out some of the major problems with it, I shrug it off as, "Oh you're too harsh" even though they're more than likely right. (Also not helped that I feel RPGs of today try to hard to cater to NES/SNES era of games, their stories are about as in-depth as those games but are stretched out to 60+ hours, and rely too heavily on FFV job system. [Bravely default 1/SL/2, Octopath Traveler, Yakuza 7 {Love this game but it does fall into that category}])
