The funny thing about the run button in Earthbound Beginnings: I'm pretty sure Nintendo just added an emulator speed-up button and called it a run button. I could swear the NPCs and other moving elements speed up along with you.

+The One True Nobody! It *is* a general speed-up button, but not an emulator one. If you get the "EarthBound Zero" ROM (which is the same thing, but leaked years ago instead of on the eShop now) the B button has the exact same "run" functionality that speeds everything up. If I recall, it was something added for development/debug and they kept it because they liked it.

Mother 3. Strange. Funny. Heartrending. I cannot think of a game that has a more accurate tagline. It's definitely strange. It will make you laugh, and it will make you CRY BUCKETS.

I didn't cry when playing this game, but I did EVERYTHING else. My heart broke at the final boss and in the beginning of the game, my hands and the rest of my body started to sweat when I started to fight Claus, and I physically screamed "No" when Flint jumped in front of Lucas and took TWO hits of PK love.

19:06 I think it's important to note that the experience on Tanetane Island _is_ part of Lucas's reaction to what he's seen. Especially when he hears Flint say "Daddy's gonna beat ya". This is how he's internalized the trauma of seeing his father lose his temper and lash out physically at Abbott and Ollie. The mushrooms have brought out his deepest fears and made them reality in front of his eyes.

I can tell this game and the story it tells really meant something to Johnny because towards the end of the plot synopsis he started speaking like a pastor, using the contrast between loud and quiet speech to convey and emphasize the emotional impact of each point he made. Great review of a great game!

The ending represents the rebirth of the world. The world is reborn in the image of whoever pulls the most needles, which is Lucas by the end. Since Lucas is a good person, we can only assume the new world will be born a good one. I don't really see much ambiguity, multiple characters tell you this. I guess the only ambiguity is if the cast of characters actually survive onto the new world or if a new population emerges. I prefer to think the characters are reborn though.

+minigunexo a bit of trivia, Ness was rumored to appear in EarthBound 64. Possibly use time travel to help Lucas and stop Porky. The development of EB64 has always fascinated me. I'm a sucker for beta information and concept art. I recommend you do a bit of research. You'll find a lot of interesting parallels between that game and the final product.

Johnny, you didn't mention the dialogue after the end screen if you move around. Maybe it's optional, but I always thought you had to read it. Though it isn't clear, it implies that everyone survived and the world was reborn. Or some think they're in heaven. Also, did you notice the big Fassad reveal in Chapter 8? It's way less predictable than Claus being the masked man.

If you look on amazon the reviews warn about people selling games with memory battery not working. Thats why I didn't get the game. The lack of an American Release really hurt it. I like to imagine Lucas became silent because he was driven by one purpose and didn't have much to say about it until the final confrontation when it actually mattered. Driven by his anger, sadness, confusion, all in an attempt to save his brother, but realizing at the very end that it's simply not going to happen and finally breaking down. I've always felt like an ideal title for Mother3 would be something along the lines of "Mother: an EarthBound story." It keeps the significance of "mother" as well as the titles design itself intact, conveys the fact that while being a game in the EarthBound series, it's not quite a conventional sequel, and covers how the game's story is told in chapters.

Every one I've read consists of 'This game is such an advancement for social justice' and 'this game is obviously better than every game ever made'- I just want to know if its a fun game. +LucaGoes If I may, it's probably best to play the game WITHOUT knowing the story. It's designed to screw with your instincts as a gamer, and one of the plot-centered characters embodies that notion. If you want basic review stuff though... The graphics are that old retro style that seems like a slightly more pixilated Earthbound, and uses mostly text as a means of communication. The gameplay consists of walking through a linear world, interacting with the monsters that live there- by either killing or befriending them. When in a fight, you take control of a little heart. on the opponent's turn, you have to avoid enemy attacks in a kind of "Bullet Hell" style. There's status afflictions that change the heart's color, and enemies all have unique attacks that can change when paired with other monsters. The story, as I said, is best experienced blind. It's not terribly deep or complex, but it's told very well in a unique way that only video games can.

About the story, I also recommend you no spoilers, but I can give you a little summary of things you both see very early and doesn't affect your reactions: There were two races that lived in this world: humans and monsters. At some point, there was a war, the monsters lost, and they were trapped in an underground world. At some point your protagonist falls into it. You don't know why or how and it's not important. The story simply revolves around trying to leave the world. What's most interesting is the well -written characters and dialogues, and you see that from the very beginning.

The gameplay is pretty fun for the boss fights on pacifist, but the vanilla fighting for the attack and defend options for the genocide and neutral routes are pretty archaic. The game is also short, but imo, it's short and sweet unlike a lot of new games out which try to drag things out ridiculously just so that people won't whine about it non-stop.

Also, the most shocking and emotive moment for me was when Hinawa is announced dead. Looking at the comments, is it bad that I'm tired of all the "Undertale's fandom is cancer" comments? Like, I know it has a noticeable bad side (all fandoms have bad sides, but some have noticeable bad sides), but I keep seeing those type of comments EVERYWHERE and it's becoming exhausting. +strange guru I feel like it slightly fits mainly because despite Lucas being silent as there are very slight nuances that shed some light on Lucas' character (I think the reason why he's silent is because he went through so much shit that he just doesn't want to say anything, but that's my own personal theory). Either way, each game has their own unique way of telling their story, and I think that's completely fine, but what will Johnny think of it?

I think this game should be called Brother. Think about it, Mother is about a space army wanting to rule Earth by revenge of a man experimenting his own son/ a powerful Alien named Gygus. Only way to calm him down is to remind him of his mother. EarthBound is about to defeat a stronger Gygus over by hope and peace on the planet earth. Mother 3 is about working together over a harder challenge of life, while heart broken of losing your loves. You see your brother, but as a puppet from Pokey. You don’t care about pulling the needle out of the ground, you want to have your Brother back.

Great video Johnny, been watching/listening to a bunch of your stuff lately, thanks for the goods man 🙏 I just finished Mother 3 for the first time (just recovered from those gut punches in the ending too) - I saw this video long before playing it, and I'm just watching it again now to help encapsulate the experience I've just had a little better. It's perfect for that. 🙏 Just commenting to say, also: Going in, I was aware of Lucas' newfound silence in the latter half of the story courtesy of this video, but I just wanted to say, I think the text that comes up during the optional fights with the illusions of his relatives on Tanetane Island sequence (the trip segment) give a really valuable insight into the nature of Lucas' inner monologue, and I think it proves beyond a doubt that Lucas' acquired silence is a direct result of him being lost in his thoughts, tortured by his mind about how much he should blame the loss of his brother and mother (and by extension, the physical absence of his father - really the complete disintegration of his once pretty literally picture perfect family) on himself. They make some quite clear references to such a sentiment in that section. It may be worth looking up the dialogue to see how much it seems like they tried to serve that role with this section of the game. I probably need to do it myself - I missed a couple of the fights. Anyway, six years later, just wanna say, totally agree with your analysis here, can't discern a clear favourite myself (on personal taste I truly feel all three have different virtues that make it hard to discern) - and yeah, very much appreciate your content mate, well wishes from Australia (now that I'm saying 'mate') 😊🌏

I have to say, this is one of your best reviews. I'm glad you enjoyed your time with Mother 3, which is one of my favorite games of all time. While some people criticize Mother 3 for not containing as large of a world or as much exploration as Earthbound, I feel that the story and the much more developed characters more than make up for it even though I also really enjoy Earthbound. Agreed. I mean, Undertale is still phenomenal, but Mother 3 has better story and more "moments", as well as better developed characters. I can easily cry at Mother 3, but at Undertale i don't. Undertale feels like it's an Indie RPG that is inspired by Earthbound and tries to be "the next Earthbound" when really it's an entirely original game. Mother 3 is the TRUE "next Earthbound", mixed with stuff that the other 2 games didn't do. I don't know exactly what I'm trying to say, but you get the idea.

Honestly just coming back to this review YEARS later cause I was finally able to play mother 3 for the 1st time, and the ending SHOOK me. I (in Lucas’ place) I think the ending occurred the way it did due to how much pain Lucas HAD to be in during the final battles. There’s no way bro wasn’t grieving and probably overcome with such negative emotion, that the ending was a literal picture of his world falling apart.

This is a great review because there are a lot of valid criticisms here that I never thought about when playing Mother 3. How Lucas isn’t initially a mute, the plot dump at the end, etc. I always look forward to John’s reviews because his perspective will usually bring up something I hadn’t considered which is always fun to hear even years later.

Now, when I play RPGs, the stories they tell are always outstanding to me. The only problem I ever have with RPGs are LEVEL GRINDING. So what I normally do to compensate for the time I feel like I'm losing is put on a show next to me, like Twin Peaks, Quantum Leap, Breaking Bad, Lost, or something else. But when I played Mother 3, the music was SO GOOD, that I couldn't turn down the volume! I absolutely LOVED this game. I don't know the name of the music piece you use at the end of the video.
