i always assumed the reason leon and krauser's fight sounded like happy slaps was because they're not actually deflecting with knife on knife, they're just redirecting (i think it's also called "passing") each other's strikes like trained martial artists typically do. its a nice touch considering their training, i haven't played an RE game but this one i might pick up sometime, it looks fun
To respond to John’s question to new players who have only played the remakes on if they feel 4 remake was a good escalation to 3, I’ll admit there were times I was absolutely missing the dodge mechanic. There were times where I was more reckless than I should’ve been cause my mind was still in “I can dodge if I’m in real trouble” mode only to obviously be overwhelmed not too long after lmao. Overall though I do think 4 remake was a perfect step forward and I still had so much damn fun playing this game that it not having a dodge button didn't really bother me most of the time.

So one thing I want to talk about the story is that I *really* like how Krauser and Luis are utilized in Leon's personal journey here. Leon's personal conflict has to do with the RC-incident and his government training making him lose the idealism he had as a rookie. Luis embodies that idealism as a fan of Don Quixote, a man who's obsessed with the romantic notions of knighthood. Krauser, being the one who molded Leon into what he is now, symbolically works as the one to kill Luis. It's something I can really appreciate here. I also agree with your assessment on REmake 4 is more of a compliment to the original rather than a replacement.
@Da_ComputerMonster Жыл бұрын

Haven't watched the video yet just scrolling through comments to see what people are saying and I disagree with the game being a compliment completely, it's a spit in the face. RE4 is one of those games where there's not a single thing I can GENUINELY and LEGITIMATELY hold against it and the remake is like a what if scenario where "what if Resident Evil 4 wasn't good?" I'm almost done with the game and during my time I haven't felt anything but boredom and disappointment, it lacks soul and is just such a downer of an experience. It's getting its dick sucked dry for now but I'm calling it, it's not gonna age well when being compared to the original. Crowbcat's video sums up the conversation better than I could.

The original RE3 had a sidestep that wasn't in any of the other classic RE games, so I don't think it's a problem or mistake to lose it for RE4's remake. The parry feels much better and keeps you closer to the action, so I feel it accomplishes the same gameplay loop as the original RE4. That version was all about forcing you to close the gap and melee, so now the parry lets you do it faster.

I’d have loved to see a type of hallucination mechanic ala Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. Saddler could occasionally appear like Alma from F.E.A.R., randomly appearing from the corner of your eye then disappearing. You could also hear whispers from time to time calling out to you. Maybe the fountain pours blood for a few seconds. Maybe a tentacle drags across the floor quickly leaving to show the plaga trying to reach out to you. Ashley could be affected, randomly making her suddenly walk towards the enemy to be taken. She might ask Leon if he’s okay or Leon might check on Ashley. This can all show that Saddler, even if he’s not close to you, still has control. Maybe it might mean, he’s near Leon and Ashley, roaming the area like a tyrant in his own right. Also, why not let you get a free ticket for completing all the missions since by then you should be nearing the final level for your weapon. You could also have an extra ticket somewhere in the world that changes each playthrough and tickets could be sold for money.

Coming from someone who has played the original RE1-5 and all the remakes, regarding the lack of the RE3R dodge, I _do_ miss it. It's certainly not a big loss in RE4R (Leon has plenty of combat options as it is) but, despite my overall indifference toward RE3R, against certain enemies, like Nemesis, the dodging felt great! I feel weird suggesting this, considering that I think RE should still have horror as a priority, but I'd love to have an entry that includes the remake dodges and parries. It doesn't have to be a mainline title but those mechanics feel so satisfying that I'd love to see them brought together in some fashion.

You can shoot it to detonate it early and use it for crowd control. Once it's detonated you can place as many as you can detonate before Mayhem Mode runs out. They do no damage to you but insane damage to enemies and kill bosses in one or two uses. Luis is actually ridiculous. Do running melees for shoulder charge instead of the pipe since it's faster. As for the dodge mechanic, I feel it did not need to be here. Seeing as Leon can duck under lots of attacks such as grabs or hatchets, you still have some ability to dodge certain attacks without sacrificing the durability of your knife, if you are skilled enough. The game doesn't tell you this except for the scythe enemies and certain boss fights, and I kind of appreciate that. I think it makes repeat playthroughs far more rewarding to master this and, while it isn't nearly as reliable as it was in RE3, it feels way better to pull off. It gives an extra layer to those split second decisions and I think it makes the combat feel a lot more interesting.

The fact that they replaced that Krauser QTE BS cutscene with an actual boss fight (in fact, they got rid of most QTEs outside of combat) makes this the superior game to me. The Salazar statue was particular aggravating to me, because, when I played the Switch version, the QTEs glitched out and require me to mash the button twice as fast: I simply couldn't mash fast enough and was stuck in a dead game.
@TheKingBahamut Жыл бұрын
So it's not just me! I only found it to be aggravating on Professional difficulty; on Normal difficulty, I could mash just fine without much trouble.
@thecardusguy5610 Жыл бұрын
It’s not a one-time glitch, it's a direct result of the 60 FPS option of the HD ports of RE4 which completely messes up certain game elements. You have to be twice as fast when mashing if you play on the PS4, Steam, Xbox and Switch versions of RE4. Plus I seem to remember that QTEs are sped-up on professional even in the old versions of the game (GC, PS2, Wii etc.) so you have an unintended AND an intended disadvantage.

I also heavily missed the dodge mechanic from RE3 but if I'm being honest, it would break the game. A cool compromise if they decide to do RE5R would be to give Sheva a dodge (like Jill), and Chris a parry.

I like that the Vegeta clip you used is from the rare Canadian dub of the Cell Saga.

Honestly I wouldn’t mind them remaking re 1 again in the re engine with new stuff (black tiger) will scare the heck out of me also 6 with a new tone that the remakes have and with a lot of changes

While I can't say the story in RE4 was ever the reason I played the game and I do miss some of the camp from the silly codecs, I do think the plot and characters were usually improved here, except for Ada I guess, she feels less cool than in the original. As far as the cut rooms go, the only ones I kinda miss are the sewer prisons where you first see novistadors I think? Which you could argue was reworked and the cave before the minecart segment that had traps all over the place and a doctor salvador. As you said, I am glad this remake is of high quality like the original yet it doesn't invalidate it as they're quite different, besides that classic RE4 is still widely available unlike OG RE1-3 so even if the remake wasn't as great, it'd be easy to go back to it without emulating. But if you were to ask me which one I prefer, I'd still probably give the edge to the original due to all the memories I've built up with it over the years, but both games are great so eh, moot point, both are worth playing, which is pretty special.

The dodge was there, but it was WAY more nuanced. Most obviously, it didn't have this massive payoff of auto aim and i-frames during. When I watched Maximilian Dood play R3make, he basically schooled his chat that if he could dodge through the game why should he fight? He steamrolled the game and I could see that it broke most basic encounters. In this game, he used the "Sprint" button to juke toward the Right-to-left axe swing of a Ganado as a test and it completely whiffed. He noted you have to dodge into where the swing was coming from there. It's definitely intentional because it looks like when Leon does it in cutscenes, but it's not invincible and still requires you to sidestep away from where attacks are tracking toward. From my personal experience It feels like an evolution because it's not so obvious when you do it but it's still effective and doesn't force you to aim at the enemy if say maybe you wanna aim at something else like an explosive barrel.

It's good to hear someone praise this game. Even for it's more controversial mechanics. I've seen a surprising amount of negativity around the game. Like yeah everybody loves what was only improved. And misses what was taken out and I get it. But what we got in return isn't bad. Yeah I hate hate the durability to. But as Johnny said. It had to be balanced in some way and there are alternatives. Some guy said he spent at least half of his cash just repairing the knife. To which I say. Were you EXCLUSIVELY using the main knife and not shooting or using kitchen knives? And were you not combining treasures to sell to the merchant? He said he hated the quests for being the most boring uninspired typical crap. Which yeah fair. But ITS EASY MONEY! Money you can use to make this stuff less of an issue. Resident evil has A L W A Y S been a RESOURCE MANAGEMENT GAME! If you can't spend wisely or know when to use something else i'm sorry but that's on you. He also threw shade at Leon for not being fun and silly anymore. And yeah I miss that to. But this makes more sense. He survived a horrific incident and got forced to be a government agent. And now has to deal with yet another literal nightmare. This time MUCH worse than just some zombies. WHO WOULDN'T BE BITTER?! But his seriousness and dedication is what sells new Leon for me. When he gets something to suppress the Plagas he tells Luis that Ashley is the Priority. And he's basically willing to lay down his life to protect her. And you see similar stuff throughout the game. I admire that level of dedication. He's there to do a job and he's gonna do it if it kills him. "By removing Leon's personality they removed the soul of resident evil 4" Yeah I agreed with him on that. But that doesn't make what we got a bad thing. A big generic sure. But generic isn't always bad. And he even went as far as to say Leon had NO quips or funny dialogue. Like ... dude. Did you even listen while playing the actual game? He says this stuff in combat! I'm sorry I spent most of this comment talking about someone else. But this guy just pissed me off. So i'm really glad to hear Johnny speak so much positivity about it.

"I bet you if Resident Evil 4 came out right now you'd have to buy the gun" Mark in your SGB playthrough. Well, two of them, to be exact: the Skull Shaker and the Sentinel 9.

With regards to the dodge thing, I think they focused more on 4 being an evolution on 2 with the knife defense deal and the occasional QTE commands

I love the rebalanced weapons in this game. That's one thing I definitely prefer over the OG, and something I worried about after Village. Village made every new gun better than the last in every way, offering no incentive to keep old weapons. Re4r rewards you for whatever loadout you choose. For instance, the first shotgun does an insane 20.2 dmg with it's exclusive. Enemies are smarter, but have smaller health pools, so stuff like the Punisher feels great even at the Island.

To be fair, I had this issue with Village as well. Though, my biggest gripe with its weapons was honestly still the rifle being weird when not aiming with the scope... It'd shoot sideways!

Interesting thing to note is that in addition to the U3 fight being removed, they changed the black cloak verdugo so that it is called U3 insteadand at some point it just completely disappears from the story instead of showing up when you fight Ramon. I imagine that might be in a DLC story. And w/r/t RE5: The Stairway of Heaven is visible on one of the screens Wesker is looking at at the end of the game so if you don't want an RE5 remake you may be in for some disappointment, idk.

When this game came out, i got it as a gift and i decided to finally fully dive into the resident evil series. Id only played Revelations on my 3ds years ago funny enough but i really liked it. So i played the OG re4 and just finished re2. Im LOVING both. I think i’ll play 5 next, then 1,6,3, CV. The most random order i know lol. But then i’m gonna play the remakes 1-4. Then 7,8. An obsession has begun
