RE5 is weirdly enough one of my favorite RE games because it feels like a logical progression of what I love about the horror franchise model. At first, RE began as a legitimate horror franchise, but the horror elements of 1,2, and 3 didn't age so gracefully due to the limited technology at the time, leaving them as games you could conceivably picture as scary but not as scary as what came after when technology evolved. Then 4 uprooted the horror elements to make a more hectic and wacky affair, though still observing horror tropes such as body horror and the tension of being isolated in a foreign environment. 5 is to me the video game analogue of Dream Warriors, Jason X, or Tremors: no longer pure horror, but instead campy goodness.
@williamcorey47002 жыл бұрын

The further focus on action at cost of horror and survival and the lost of most of the campiness of RE 4 made RE5 the beginning of the slump RE suffered for like 7 years. Because people were starting to get sick of overblown bullshit with each RE game just getting more and action oriented with tons of explosions and trying too hard to be a movie.

Indeed, reminds me of a recent retrospective on the original Planet of the Apes and how it had a primer (of sorts) in the form of skilled actors to make the far flung material far more digestible: “Filmmakers wisely knew that what was essential in pulling this off was for the apes to look realistic. Luckily John Chambers was on board and instead of putting the actors in tacky gorilla suits, used prosthetics that made the apes look much more realistic. But it was also the presence of A-list actors underneath the makeup that carried it over. Rather than follow the Hollywood tradition of using poverty-row actors like Lon Chaney Jr. (Chaney specialized in werewolf and Frankenstein parts), the filmmakers used acclaimed actors… But ultimately the 1968 classic has never been surpassed because, as Rinzler’s book shows, it was the product of literate and talented people.” In this, it makes me wonder if video games are different enough that having more skilled actors/more authentic performers would not have automatically further elevated a game as superlative as RE4. Especially in recent years with the reality of “crunch” showing that favoring the cutting of corners isn’t an artistic decision… I think I’ll leave the source unsaid, as who they are kind of belies any attempt at the respectability they seek to heap on Apes…
@osurpless2 жыл бұрын
@CYB3R2K30 They have their virtues, and to me, mainly that the movies connect a hell of a lot better than the first one with Beneath the Planet (def a cash grab). To the point that I avoided the superior Escape from the Planet for decades because I assumed it would be average at best; where the humans are actually quite sinister (Hasslein). The biggest flaw with Dawn of the Planet (2014) is that the name should have been interchanged with War in 2017?

I am not aware who voiced "The Majini" in RE5 though all of the enemy names like in RE4, are in Swahili. Learned this only somewhat recently (2 years ago or so) but most of the enemies and such have very interesting names if you find out the Swahili translation. Majini is "water (flowing)" or "a current" seems like Swahili is just bit different but my understanding is it can mean just "water" or "flow of water" or so on, or, that is added by the "ni" after maji. The spider like enemies are called just Spiderheads and over all, I would think I think personally about realities in africa more because of RE5, not less. Be it very campy, the story underlines themes of exploitation in Africa, especially from western capitalist sources, while most of the surroundings in beginning speak of the poverty people are in instead of being lifted up. While they can be seen as racially insensitive, the parts with tribes people speaks how Africa still has their remote and more tribalist tribes, even today, which can be weird but is also culturally rich and diverse thing that has beautiful and unique art and structures. Sheva underlines her wish to help her people and friends throughout the game. It is simple, it is campy, it does not try to be deep, because these are not that deep of themes, but just things we do not think about most of the time. The game certainly lacks the misguided Japanese views of pre 90's or so where they saw Africa as uncivilized continent that needed other people to civilize and teach them better and "evolve up" to the same level with rest of the world, and RE5 instead reminds that we are not saving Africa as hard as we'd wish, that Africa has troubles and multi cultural aspects of it's own and is also a uniquely beautiful place that has no other on this earth.

Addressing the tribal enemies I think it might be a call back to RE4 with the castle druids/ cultists. Where the enemies went for a more older aesthetic. I guess Capcom was like let's do that again for RE5 but since the enemies were African they went for an ancient African aesthetic. The tribal section serves as the games castle section. This can also be backed up by how RE4 starts with a village section and ends with a commando section. This game does the same thing.

@@richardfitzwell4618 nobody said the game is racist just because the enemies happen to be black. It's true that the game isn't explicitly racist. Does the lore say anything about the tribal enemies being citizens from elsewhere that regressed to their primal instincts / attire? Because my impression was definitely just that countries have tribal land, and on that tribal land are people in attire consistent with their values / culture. It didn't seem to me like it was meant to be like, "Before the outbreak, these people were driving cars and wearing nice suits. Now they're reverting back to their primal instincts." Again, maybe I just am unaware of a lore drop that said this. But that's not the impression I got at all from them. The environments in which you fight them are consistent with the idea that they were already tribal. It's just that the virus broke into their tribe.

I recently went on an re binge playing all the games for the first time, mostly in order, and man this was the one I could not bring myself to play more than a couple chapters in. I’ll chalk it up to not having a co-op partner, maybe someday I’ll play through it and re6 in co-op.

The entire news issue with "muh racism white guy in Africa" thing is such bullshit and should be met with nothing but laughter these days. A Hallmark in shit game journalism. Literally no one who was interested in playing the game back then cared.

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed RE5 because this game next to RE2 is my top favorite for me. I remember the hours me and my dad sank into playing this and both of us having a blast with the CoOp mode. My Dad controlling Chris and me as Sheva we dominated the hordes together and freaked the hell out when we say the giant Zombie Mutant animals, I think the Gorilla one gave us the hardest time. But it was a blast.

I'm not sure about the villagers 'regressing' personally. When I played, I got the vibe that these villagers were the type to always wear traditional garb and live off the land. The addition of the Las Plagas only served to make them regress into a more violent state like the villagers in RE4. They didn't change their ways to something else entirely, they just got twisted and violent. But that's just my take on it.

This game means a lot to me and I have loads of clips saved to my PS4. Favorite clip is from the Chris and Jill DLC where a friend and I had crossed signals, she went one way and I went towards a boost section as the anchor wielding enemies came at us. I got grabbed and kept pressing circle and Chris just kept yelling "HELP! HELP! HELP! HE-" until he got killed. She was riiiight there too haha Ah, good times

7:41 I don’t care. I’ve heard a lot of people saying racist like they were giving out candy bars and or ice cream It doesn’t mean racism doesn’t exist it’s just means the more accusations of racism are made for no reason than assumptions the more racism becomes a static noise in people’s heads

Just want to take a moment to say that subtitles within the image and not the letterbox is actually the appropriate thing to do. Movies are played in cinemas where you wouldn't see the letter box, so the subs would be on the image itself. This was a big deal when Blu Rays started becoming popular and so did projectors, and it was a pain in the ass when a movie would have the subs out of the picture for anyone that invested in a projector, as the subs wouldn't display properly since projectors cut out the letterbox. Nowadays, it's quite different, but when RE5 first came out, I'm sure they took this into account.

I’m pretty sure the Tribal infected was done to replicate the Zealots from 4 seeing as they both appear as the second type of enemies,but shessh it comes as a tasteless and stupid considering they try to explain as the people in that village didn’t interact much with people outside the village but like did only happen to them surely the townspeople couldn’t have much contact with other places when they got the plagas

Probably too much for the game. With more AIs in the game, the worse of performance it will have. Plus you will have to dumb down the AI. Halo Reach had this problem where they made the AI worse than previous games just to have a more enemies.

This game plays amazing on PC at 120fps. I'll never understand how anyone could say a game is better at 30fps. I feel like Johnny attributes unrelated things to 60fps. Like that Uruboros boss with the flamethrower has always had the potential to bug out, even on the 360 that fight was stupid. The only problem with the PC version of the game is in the tanker level, there's a part where one of the characters gets caught in a cage, one of those big gulper guys is supposed to spawn in but they don't, you have to download a 3rd party fix for it. Other than that I've never had any technical issues with it and it's always been flawless.

I'm at least glad RE5 got an updated review sooner than I expected haha, definitely felt like a missing part of the marathon given the channel had some history with the game. I don't have much to say on the game itself, I remember playing a bit of coop at a friends house when everyone in my circle was starting to get PS3 Slims and not being too impressed by it, and much later down the line trying the game again when the demo dropped on the Switch, and still having very similar feelings. Gotta say, not a fan of Jills redesign. Your comment on the shameless rehash of the military base kinda makes me think how the final portions of these games often feel the weakest as they're just so much less interesting compared to what precedes them, and while my experience with this game in particular is strictly other playthroughs, RE7 feels like the worst offender of the bunch in that regard.
