I know this is a long video, but watch it until the end. We learned a lot about Dominica, his language, living situation, and about the other monks living in the temple close by starting around 17:05 and to the end of the video. So watch it all the way through for the full story.

Please don't visit temples unnecessarily and ruin monks' lives. Monks isolate themselves as a practice of monastic tradition (this is highly praised by Buddhist and Hindu traditions, even laymen do this at least once a month). To be a monk, this "boy" left his parents, family, relatives willingly. Monks are not supposed to mingle with laymen as it is against their practice. This is why Buddhist laymen leave them alone and only visit temples during special days. It appears that you lack cultural awareness and decided to take a half-naked woman to the temple and mingle with the monk, treating him as a little boy [this is unacceptable in a buddhist society. Chit chatting, sharing snacks and food, reminding about their families, and demotivating (by words, actions) them in a way so that they leave monastic life are big no no]. This affection is not gonna help him in long run. So, please leave him live alone, support him by not visiting his temple unnecessarily. Monks in SL are supported by the community around the temple. I'm not blaming at you. But, please respect the local culture and traditions to your best.

@@slhermit I understand your concern but sometimes the rest of the world needs to know. Often in Ireland and UK there are problems. monks who teach at Ampleforth college in England abused boys for many years. The "privacy" helped. I know in Jersey a number of boys and girls were killed, murdered for years. In the UK a child goes missing every 5 minutes. Many are never found. Learning Buddhism is noble and privacy is crucial but so are the real life of an individual. Thank you Johnny FD and your friend for an amazing video.

A few points: 1) I think this is a watch tower to ward off animals coming to eat the crops. These are pretty common in rural Sri Lanka, where farmers spend some of their nights in tree houses (away from their homes) when their crops are mature to scare away pests such as wild boar and elephants. Possibly the monks take turns to stay at the watch tower. 2) I don't think it makes sense to ask complicated questions from someone who barely knows English other than a few buzz words!! It's even worse to make conclusions/deductions from answers given in such a scenario. The person answering would not have understood the question in the first place, and would be answering to what he/she thinks you asked. More often than not, they would pick up on the buzz word (like "temple" for instance), and say "yes" "yes". Good that you used Google translate at the end.

Hi Johny and Kristina, It's great to have you in our country! I started following your channel after stumbling upon your video on the Arugam Bay hippie market. It's amazing to see the the pains you have taken to communicate with this monk and trying to understand our cultural aspects (on the contrary to what most comments here say, as a traveller myself, I know it's not practical to expect to have a translator by your side all the time when you're an independent traveller) so please don't worry about it. You have done an amazing job, showing us stuff that sometimes even Sri Lankans themselves wouldn't see in person! So thank you for that! I hope you have a wonderful stay! Ok. First we don't address the monks "this guy, that guy etc.. and we don't do hi fives with monks. It's the religious respect and those little monks don't care that much about it and you two might not aware of that. So that's kinda alright. He is telling that he should be live here till 18 years old because after that the kinda graduate as a adult monk and should go to another monetary or template. This place you showing is a Buddhist monk school. We Sri Lankens call it "Piriwena" The tree house monk may be bad at learning or a new comer to piriwena. May be he doing his detention punishments as a watchman. There is a academic learning system for monks in Sri Lanka and they have universities too. So they can graduate, post graduate and go further to so much titles.

This is a very heart warming video. They have surely become monks on their own will and with the permission of the parents, if they are alive. They can leave and give up being a monk, if they want. They are little ones and rules are not very strict. If it is In a Buddhist area they will get alms (food) and will be well looked after by the villagers. But as there are not many Budhists in that area, they may have to cook their own meals. These temples seem to be historical but as you can very well see most of the lands of those areas are owned by others. Buddhists have no hard feelings about that but sad to see Buddhist culture is erased. We love the freedom we enjoy in our relogion. It is a harmless religion and everyone is treated equally. We have great respect and gratitude for these monks, as it is because of them, our Budhist mark still remains there. (Selfish and possessive feeling perhaps) But it's heart breaking to see their hard life, they are kids after all.
