In this video we'll be taking a look at Surge the Tenrec. Surge debuted last year (2021) in the Sonic the Hedgehog comics put out by IDW. A mean, green tenrec, Surge's instantly-iconic look and edgy attitude made her an instant hit with Sonic fans. In this video I'll be taking a look at Surge's background, her debut in the IDW comics, the 'Imposter Syndrome' miniseries centred around her and her clash with Sonic. This is the first IDW video I've done like this and it was a lot of fun to read through the IDW back catalogue. It's great!

I absolutely love how Surge is a tenrec, which is yet another species of animal whose irl appearance is somewhat similar to a hedgehog (just like how Knuckles is a echidna) and thus the false doppelgänger motif is really well applied to her design!

I adore Surge, but I also adore her partner Kitsunami and makes me sad that people tends to ignore him, since I think their strange friendship that evolved from her bossing him around to actually asking him for ideas and plans, I like that, I like that there's some short of character development and I hope Surge and Kit actually grow as good friends while at the same time being dangerous villains trying to destroy everything.

Surge is my personal favorite “Faker” archetype character. She’s Sonic’s cocky and rebellious nature gone sour. Best of all, she’s directly linked to Sonic. Her entire purpose is to kill Sonic, even if she doesn’t know why she wants to. She has such a fun personality and can be genuinely vicious when she tries. Leave it to IDW to give us one of the greatest line ups of original characters to date.

Surge is a really good example of a victim of circumstances instead of being an evil villian like Eggman,Starline,and Metal if situations were different she could of been a hero just like Sonic and friends. Not to mention she's also a reflection of Sonics actions if Sonic was a little more strict with his moral code her tragedy could of been averted.

Idk if I'd put Metal in the "evil villain" category. People seem to forget he's the original mirror for Sonic. Just like Surge he was created to serve a purpose, it's just Surge has a little more freedom of thought than Metal has. Metal for me is better cause he does have complete choice not to do what he wants, but wants to for his own selfish reasons anyways

The thing is that Sonic is strick with his moral code as he dosent belive in killing his enemies as he thinks everyone deserves the chance and freedom to change and he will not be the one to take it away. While yes this has had negative effects on others but again that dosent mean his moral code is lacking or weaken then others it's simple a different one then others

Simply put, she's Sonic's version of Wario.Vulgar, violent, and selfish.She's basically strict and messed up when it comes to people other than her partner.But to surge, she works for her own goals, and she's not stupid.And Shadow is Sonic's acquaintance. and now that he is no longer Sonic's rival, she works wonderfully in the concept of bad Sonic.

Surge is honestly a very tragic character. Starline did horrible things to her and Kit, that they've become so mentally broken and scarred. She could've been Sonic's greatest ally, but after everything she's been through, she's become his darker, unhinged half.

Fun fact: it's been confirmed by Ian Flynn (IDW main writer) that Surge, purely in power, is faster and stronger than Sonic, and the main reason for Sonic's current advantage is years of battle experience, as Starline's trials up to this point do not match the entirety of Sonic's adventures up to this point.

Surge seems like a proper rival for Sonic. Shadow and Sonic are on equal footing with each other; however, their rivalry has very quickly diminished over the years and are more bittersweet friends than anything now. They are more akin to the relationship that Sasuke and Naruto or Vegeta and Goku have, except less prone towards sudden violence towards each other without reason. Surge is not a hedgehog but is based on an animal commonly mistaken for hedgehogs. She clearly could be more dangerous than Sonic; however, she is inexperienced and highly emotional that causes her to give into rage and not think strategically, which Sonic is able to think quickly counteract her.

I like her because she’s not just a female reboot of scourge the hedgehog, everything about her from her backstory to her powers and personality is completely different from him (the only thing they share is fur color and eye color and her name kinda sounds like scourge) I also really love that she has electricity as her power and her partner has water manipulation, right now her and her partner don’t have much real field and battle experience (proved by her fight against metal and when she lost against her first fight with sonic) but if they really honed their abilities and got a lot more experience, they had the potential to be Sonic’s next most powerful enemies like shadow, silver, metal, and any other enemies they’ve had over the years

Absolutely love Surge and Kit. And these two characters deserve better friends. They really have been through a lot. They don't remember the past and they have been manipulated. And I hope these two become ex-antagonist and become friends with Sonic and friends. I can see Surge and Sonic being buds base on their personality and speed. And Tails helping Kits regain some confidence and self esteem. Those two deserve a lot more better than Dr. Starline. And hopefully become friends with Sonic and his other friends.

Fun Fact: Tenrecs are part of the Afrotheria clade of mammals; which also includes elephants, aardvarks, hyraxes, elephant shrews, golden moles, and sea cows. Isn't taxonomy fun? The Kratt Brothers made an entire episode about tenrecs in 2015 as part of their Wild Kratt animated series if you want to learn more about these crazy little critters. 🦔

I love surge, but honestly she's low-key a Blaze imposter too. Considering they're both extremely fast and powerful female rivals that are equal to Sonic, both have high ponytails, both have an aggressive personality, and both have kinetic abilities ( electrokinesis and pyrokinesis ). And they're both not-hedgehog fakers. ( Blaze is technically a sonic imposter in a way, since she IS the alternate counterpart of Sonic from her dimension. Hence her EXACT contrasts and similarities, as well as her design directly complementing his i.e. Purple/Blue, Pink/Red and have the same shoes but unique to their own style. This was all intentional.)

I haven't read the comics yet but I'm definitely tempted. This character kicks ass for sure. First and foremost, she is absolutely based and said what we're all thinking - that there's no valid reason why Sonic shouldn't be trying to outright kill the extremely dangerous villains instead of just playing cartoon cat-and-mouse with them, and his 'moral code' makes no damn sense and allows the villains to constantly harm more people. I really hope this leads to Sonic getting some character growth and becoming more properly ruthless in the name of protecting people - a real hero, in other words! He's been a dumbed-down harmless kid's-show hero for way too long, even though this character type doesn't remotely fit a serious setting. Let's see what he's like when he actually grows up a bit! :)

I think my favorite thing about Surge is actually her connection to Kit, just by her being inspired by android 18, Kit is automatically associated with 17. At first I thought “yeah but it’s just surface level, cause 17 was stronger than 18, Kit isn’t stronger than Surge.” Until I realized that he IS, cause he’s saved her skin every time she’s lost a fight. The only time he didn’t was the time she lost against sonic and fell down the pit, and she still would’ve been toast without him if she hadn’t found the dynamo cage. I definitely do like Surge on her own, but I definitely can’t wait to see if/how Kit’s personality will change once he notices how much Surge actually needs him.

Adding to the mod, I'd also recommend the Sonic Robo Blast 2 fan game (a 3D Sonic game running off of the classic DOOM engine) and seeking the Surge mod afterwards. Her play-style and abilities makes her unique in that game. Such as Volt-jumps and electric charges that can absorb rings nearby!

I really like Surge as well. A lot of people in the community always say she's just a "female" Scourge, when they're two very different people. I get the comparison appearance wise, but in regards to character, two different identities. This is a very good in-depth video of the character. Glad to see she gets some love.

There's a webcomic called "Jake Fights the Void" where they did a one-off gag page depicting a game show called "OC or Archie", with the punchline being just a picture of Scourge. Scourge is definitely more fanfic than Surge, though, largely because so much of Scourge's personality could be summed up with the words "Catastrophically Horny."

This is super interesting, I knew Surge and Starline were references to glitches but I didn't know Kitsunami was. I've never seen anyone talk about that glitch until now is there anyone who knows how to do it or where I can see it.

Well, thanks for all the spoilers. 😅 Now I kind of know too much before I even started reading the IDW comics of Sonic. 😕 I thought that I just clicked on a video with just an opinion or a few information, but not the whole plot. No offence. Anyways, I like & enjoy the way you made the video, just wasn't prepared for so many information at once. I'm on the search for general information, because a friend of mine recommended me reading the IDW Sonic comics, because she and I, we both like Sonic. Maybe you could make a video about Kit, the buddy of Surge? That would be pretty cool, because I love Blue characters. 💙 I'm mainly familiar with the Archie comics & Fleetway comics, but the IDW ones seem to be cool, too. I would like to give them a try.

Surge is my new favorite. Now I really want Great Eastern entertainment to make a plush of her just like they did for tangle and whisper. A lot of people say she's like android 18, and when it comes to her purpose, just like the android were programed to kill goku then yes I agree but I can't help but feel like surge was based on caulifla from dbs because of her personality it really gives me caulifla vibes.

I'm thinking Kit is going to be important to Surge's story arc. He's just as screwed up as she is, but he's also more logical and thoughtful. He's also the only person Surge ever seems to listen to... Even if she's not great at following his advice. I'm hoping they learn who they once were, and become even more epic characters for it. We could use a few more nutcases around here. Poor Team Dark are feeling overworked!

I wonder if Surge could evolve into a character similar to Launch (Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z). Where she could end up being evil part of the time and nice the other times when she's more normal.
