Great video. Really liked this short series. One thing I do say is, you don't need to seal any of the head gasket components. Should be just fine though. That engine is in really good shape!

Thanks for your comments. Yes I agree with your comment but opted for the gasket sealant anyway. Cheers

Replacing the head gasket on a Tohatsu 9.8, in researching head gasket sealants I came across some strong recommendations, NOT to use copper based sealants as they will corrode the aluminum block and head surfaces. This is consistent with NOT using copper based anti fouling on aluminum sail drives. Wondering if that was a manufacturer recommendation or something you just added?

I read various articles and watched several videos regarding gasket sealants and decided that I would use one. I guess its an individual choice. I have had no problems so far. I cant remember if the manufacturer recommended a sealant or not. Cheers

OMC/BRP manual for 9.9 / 15 hp says to apply a thin coat of gasket sealant to both sides of the head gasket. Doesn’t mention anything about coating head cover screws. Regards

@@danielrobert7181 Thx for the info. FWIW, my son and I got the gasket installed and the motor working. He forgot a small O ring on the fuel pump which caused fuel to leak but once got that sorted out a pretty simple repair/ rebuild.

Thank you for this content. I have the same motor but a 9.9hp but going to trying to upgrade it to a 15hp. Do you have a video showing how to adjust the carb? No money to take to the shop so im stuck doing my own work. Please upload more videoz on this motor.

I have rebuilt hundreds of v8, v6, inline 6, and even flat heads for cars. Boat motors maybe more simple in how they are built, but I have never done one, so I consider myself a novice.

Nice video. Amazing shape motor. Mine looked like that 25 years ago. Do you have any idea what the hole on the right side of the thermostat cover is for. It opens into a cylindrical cavity in the head. The reason I want to know is that I broke off the upper right hand fastener and then proceeded to break off my drill bit when drilling it out. I am considering filling that cavity with epoxy, tapping it, and using it to attach the cover. It should work ok but I'd love to know what that cavity exists for in the first place.

That is a really good question. I wondered the same thing when I was working on my outboard. I couldn't find much on a google search but in the outboard manual it describes the removal of the thermostat assembly and "temperature switch if fitted". So I suspect it is a location for a temperature switch, if you have one. If you don't then I can't see any problem with doing what you suggested. Cheers

If you remove the lower cowling it will make access to the lower fasteners on the engine much easier.. good video nonetheless!

How do you know if the thermostat is bad?? My 15hp has a good water pump and is pumping plenty of water to keep kool!
@albabmg
@albabmg 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like your thermostat is OK. I check mine by placing in a pot of water. Gradually heat the pot until you see the thermostat open. The thermostat should open at about 62 deg C or 143 deg F. You can use a thermometer to check this. Cheers

@@albabmg I had a new thermostat in my parts so I installed it. It looked like the old one was bad because it was sticking out in the front and the new one was not! Plus the old one was black.
