Hadn't noticed this vid before. Great explanation, and very detailed. I can imagine how hard that assembly would be without the "tricks and tools". Re the LTD, yes those Fords had the headlight current going up though the switches. The XA Falcon (and similar variants) would sometimes suffer from the smoke getting out of the switches... You can imagine - at nigh of course, a smoking headlight switch when you are driving along the freeway! And the difference between those era Fords and the boats you play with is that the Fords will rust without actually going near the water!

Stu, what I’ve used to align the carrier retainer plate and the bearing carrier is two pieces of long all-thread. Once the carrier is seated, remove one piece of all-thread, insert a retainer bolt, then remove the other piece of all-thread, and insert the other retainer bolt. Tighten to specs. Easy peasy.

Is there a particular alignment between the drive shaft and pinion? Read a line in my manual regarding water pump replacement saying to be careful not to pull the driveshaft up because the gear box MUST be disassembled and the pinion realigned to the driveshaft. Can’t find anywhere in the manual saying what that alignment would be...

I also vacuum seal my lower units I only do that because I had a weird curve ball thrown at me one time on a lower unit it would not leak under pressure but due to the cavitation of the drive shaft in the water while running it was causing a vacuum ever so slight that would allow water just sneak off of seals this was also in conjunction with a pitted drive shaft. It all come together as a perfect storm that took vacuum sealing and some cussing to figure out. LOL I enjoy your videos is always a little when I got to do to get a danger marine shirt I would be the only one in Texas with one. LOL

Enjoy your videos.Very well explained.Can relate this to my 20hp Johnson.I had asked you about play in fly wheel on my 20hp Johnson(being able to kind of jiggle it back and forth alittle without anthing else moving other than the crank moving with it)) and you had said that is normal.Could you incorporate a demonstration of this 30hp by trying to "jiggle " the fly wheel back and forth.I am curious what yours does?I was told if you can jiggle those alittle that is rod/crank wear and it gets bad enough you get rod knock?thanks

Dangar Marine, I have a couple questions about pressure testing... 1) Is 10 psi a good rule of thumb for all makes and models? and 2) what kind of pressure loss is considered acceptable over what period of time? Cheers!

Yes, 10 psi is good regardless of size and as long as there isn't a drop within about 20 seconds you should be fine.

The pressure on the bottom end be 10 lb PSI on a 48 horsepower Johnson same as the 30?
@jimbogasoline2042
@jimbogasoline2042 6 жыл бұрын
butch c I'm not familiar with Johnsons, but usually in outboards, the 20 hp - 30 hp all share most of the same parts (especially main parts). Usually 40 hp - 60 hp are the same. I'm guessing your 48hp has a different lower unit. It probably is close numbers in the pressure test. What you are really looking for is if it holds pressure for a certain amount of time, like Stu said in the video, its probably just several seconds. If there was a leak, the pressure would drop pretty fast and would be noticeable.
@ronpowell2373
@ronpowell2373 6 жыл бұрын
It is the depth under water that determines the test pressure. So 10PSi is actually pretty good for almost all engines of the outboard type. In actual use the prop shaft seal is under about 3psi pressure when at rest, and typically under a slight vacuum when under way. At high speed - above 20knots or so, the exhaust outlet under water is in a pretty high vacuum area. The drive shaft is rarely under much pressure at all, the most being when the engine is at rest, and even then only a pound or so. When the boat is on the plane that are of the engine can easily be 'dry'.
