Hey, my guesstimations (loosely based on my "Mercury Big Foot" experience) are that the larger lower gearcase just provides you with a beefier unit. The added drag due to the larger case and prop won't be significant at speeds under 50 mph. The larger diameter of the prop shouldn't impact much but, as you are pushing a light and easy planing hull (vs a pontoon), the higher pitch will move more water (whithout dampening the motor's acceleration curve) and provide faster holeshots.At equal wot rpm, you also ought to get a few extra mph. But then, I could entirely be wrong. LOL! Stay safe and be merry !

Man what do you think would be the right prop for my 1998 70hp Johnson I have a 13x19 right now and I'm at 37-39 mph at 5600 rpms but I have to trim up really high to get those rpms ranges my rooster tail is above my motor some. Should I drop to a 13.25x17 pitch to get those rpms up. I had a 14x17 which was the biggest diameter you could fit and at 6000 rpms I was at 35.5 mph.. I just feel like I'm lugging my motor bad with this 13x19 All are aluminum props by the way on my 1999 Lowe 17 bass. Online it says for the motor the WOT range is 4500-5500

Hey. I'm in the same boat. What Prop would be Best? Hahaha. We were discussing it just tonight. Captain Mark, my neighbor said, You could go through 20 props before you find the right combination. It gets very mathematical. I, personally never worried to much about it dealing with the smaller outboards. If I needed a prop I would go with the standard size. But now, I'd like to know! Hahaha. I could do 3 pages on the subject but I won't. Spare you and myself! Anyway, do as much homework on it as you can, it's all on the interweb. Just another pain in the azz! Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay Tuned !

Interesting how parts on those motors are so interchangeable. Kodi has gone over these swapping parts before. I was thinking the 55 would have been faster anyway before the lower unit discovery. Still will be interesting what top end will be.

Yeah What he said. Hahaha. Mines an 87 also. Keep an eye on craigslist, offerup and ebay. Sometimes an old parts motor will come up. Check with Kodibass, he might have one. Or get the CMC tilt and trim unit, the one for larger motors, then you can put any motor on it you want. But they aren't cheap. You can find a used one sometimes 300 - $500. Or a powerhead swap with a dead 90's motor with T & T. Thanks again !

I can't wait to see how much difference it makes. Still holding out on putting my 55 carbs on my 40, and I have some Chris Carson racing reeds I can install too if needed. I hope it helps out on torque mostly so I can drive my higher pitch prop a bit faster. Would love to run from maybe 26mph, on up to a solid 30 or 32. Keep in mind I will still be using the 40 block and gearcase so it's smaller. I would have had mine done by now if it were not for 12 hr shifts,piss pouring rain on my days off,

no. will actually go slower! you cannot add more fuel and just hope it goes faster without changing the heads (stock .565'' depth, milling it to 45ss spec .515'' will bring compression up to burn the extra fuel). anything beyond that and you need to open the exhaust. so remove air box, up jets to no 56, carson reeds and shave the head while bumping timing to 21 degrees give or take will give you a boost up top, and wont loose much bottom end.

@@user-bn3zo3mh5v the difference between a 50hp and a 40hp of that era are (for the 50hp) tighter heads, 52-56d jets up from around 38d, reeds with stops, timing to 19-21 degrees depending on year. adding larger carbs will simply make it run rich, and slower without it being allowed to burn extra fuel. give it a shot, but be sure to check the plugs as they will be wet and get fouled really quickly, and carbon will build up on the piston crowns rapidly increasing the chance of detonation over time.
@user-bn3zo3mh5v3 жыл бұрын
@@ct1762 I was able to get into the 55hp carbs and the Chris Carson reeds for about 125 bucks so figured I would give it a try. I can switch back quickly if need be.
