Articles from the USA today are from some months ago, so keep that in mind. Pay is average in Johnson City. Rent is over 1700 for something decent. Homes in Johnson City are over 300K, and you will need to put 20 percent down. Johnson City is a beautiful area, but affordable is questionable based upon income. On the subject of health care, a article from Brett Kelman stated Tennessee is trying to Rein In Ballad’s Hospital Monopoly After Years of Problems. One thing I am glad of is that some doctors allow you to pay directly to them and not have to use your health insurance. Beautiful area for sure, but you may want to look for more affordable rent and home options outside of Johnson City.

What distinguishes the happiest communities from others? In addition to having fewer residents, the happiest communities had shorter commute times and more affordable housing, with a smaller proportion of the population being foreign-born. They also observed that individuals in the happiest communities are less transient compared to those in the least happy communities, are more likely to attend church, and significantly more likely to experience a sense of belonging within their communities.

What is the best state to move to if you are selling to inbound buyers from significantly wealthier states to retire in Tennessee, to gain an advantage. Mississippi and Alabama? Some states were paying to move their if you have school age children.

@@otishaag987 Thank you for taking the time to comment. Great point. USA Today studied and ranked states by more than affordability. Probably why Mississippi and Alabama didn’t get selected as the number one state.

We moved from Johnson City almost Three years ago and the reason we left is because there’s not any jobs and the few you do find doesn’t pay much. The Southern part of Tennessee pays more than North East Tennessee does plus the taxes are ridiculously high!

Closest tornado we've had since 2002 when I moved here was in Glade Springs, VA, about 45-60 minutes north of Johnson City, TN.

You can't expect zero risk, that goes for more anywhere. But the mountains usually break up the storms. Its pretty low risk. But tornado risk is increasing everywhere, Pittsburgh for example used to be super low risk but I believe there was several just outside the city this year. They normally did not come that far east, would stop at the OH/PA/WV border.
