Johnson Evinrude 15 hp 1982 Idle problem ( reed valve ? )

Hi all, to be honest, that engine is still in storage(im just to busy with other things). But if you have the same issue and you want to have a start. What i made up out of all the comments I got is: It is most likely a clogged fuel system. its just lagging fuel to keep running. I still have to rebuild the carburetor. And ultrasonic clean all the parts. I did let check my engine if the compression is fine and it still is so its still worth repairing. What I would do now is. First, clean or let someone good clean the carburetor and replace some parts of that if needed. If thats not the problem switch to the fuelpump. There are kits for both of them. Fuelpump kit (0393088) carb kit (0398453). I cant obviously say if this is also a solution for you, im not a specialist in engines. But it might give you a start. Good luck! Let me know if it worked or not. And if I one day got to work on this engine I will put it on this channel.

It's probably a clogged jet. Reed valves seldom fail even on these old things. As you clean the carburettor it will just run fine. I just bought one like this. :)

Simple. You have carburetor issues. Buy a kit, clean the carburetor well, don't over think the problem. Won't idle without choke means lack of fuel. Lack of fuel at idle with mixture screw 2 turns or more out means idle circuit. This carburetor has a hose in the bowl that sometimes develops cracks and causes idle issues. A new hose comes in the kit. Make sure your fuel is clean and water free.

Lots of good tips in here. I will not touch the reed valves. I start to make sure that all the other components are ok. (and well seeled. It can be an issue now) Ive ordered the parts but Im still waiting for it. Thanks for the help now! When I have the parts Ill make a new video.

Let me know. I'll be happy to assist you any way I possibly can. Trust me, my advice is 100% spot on. I've rebuilt more carburetors & worked on more outboards, from tune-ups, waterpumps, trouble shoots to total rebuilds, since I was 16 yrs. old & I'm 52 now. I even had my own outboard repair business. I would HIGHLY recommend that you install (if possible) a FUEL-WATER FILTER/SEPARATOR between the tank & the motor. It will prevent a lot of headaches! Fuel pump is my guess. Turning the lean/rich constantly is useless too. It takes the motor 30 seconds to adjust to even a 1/8 adjustment.

You need to remove the carb, disassemble & SOAK IN A GALLON CAN of carb cleaner for several hours. Buy an OEM carb kit & float. Be sure to remove the core plugs so you can properly clean it. You can buy a gallon can of carb cleaner for about $30.00 at any auto parts store. It can be used for many years, to clean all sorts of parts. Flush all the cleaned parts with water, then dry w/compressed air. Be SURE to blow out ALL the tiny channels & passages! Re-assemble per the instruction incl.w/ kit.

I have a 79 Johnson and it is doing same thing as this motor. I rebuilt the carb, new fuel lines and pump, new thermostat water pump, new coils, new power pack, new plugs. Does the needle valve seat need to be replaced? If yes how do I do that? The motor is not overheating!

Its actually very good possible that it is the feul pump. I will start to replace the fuelpump and rings in and around the carb before I open the engine itself. But its still freezing outside. Thanks for your advice .

Start & allow to FULLY warm up. IN GEAR, at idle, if you need to adjust the low speed needle, do like this; With motor idling as low as possible w/out stalling (AGAIN...IN GEAR!) SLOWLY turn needle 1/4 turn at the time, wait 10 to 20 seconds for motor to adjust, keep doing this until motor begins to idle rougher, then, back needle out the other way, again, SLOWLY, 1/4 TURN AT THE TIME! When motor smooths out, you can leave it there, if satisfactory, or, keep backing out until motor runs rougher

Ill keep you updated here :p (or a new video). I have to disassemble the engine anyway to replace my starter. The bolt of it cant be turned tight so I have to start it totally manual now. That part will be replaced with a good part from another junk engine. To replace that part Im going to see the read valves anyway.

You don't need to replace manifold repair the stripped starter bolt. Buy a HELI_COIL kit for the size you need, follow the instructions, basically, drill the threaded hole with the drill bit size the instruction say, use the thread tap included to make new threads, then insert the heli-coil with the tool (all included with the kit) and you're all fixed. Total time, between 15 and 30 minutes. I did it on the same motor I used to have. Now, in my next few posts I'll address the running issues.

Hey, now the summer is over I had put the engine aside. But soon I have soon time and I try some options, like testing the ignition, and checking the reed valves. I will put the results in here and or upload it in a new video. So pay attention to my channel. Its all new for me so it takes some time to figure it out with theriginal manual. sebrassino I have a 1966 9.5 evenrude runs great at low speeds trolls all day but when I throttle up it bogs down ad won't go into the higher rpms cuald this be a timing issue or my jets please help any comments would be great

causing fuel to become contaminated with water. You can't use old fuel, and you should always add a high quality MARINE fuel conditioner to help preserve & stabilize the fuel. I use several brands; YAMAHA FUEL CONDITIONER, QUICKSILVER FUEL CONDITIONER, STARTRON FUEL CONDITIONER, to name a few of the top brands that REALLY work. Also, be sure to use the proper zip straps to secure the fuel hose to the fittings. You can buy them at most outboard dealerships. A lot of people use standard zip ties

How are you doing with this problem? Like others have said, the reed valves aren't to blame most likely, the engine is running on two cylinders...I don't think the fuel pump is bad either because you can keep the engine running by choking it. The engine sounds lean due to an air leak, or carb problem...You are over doing it cranking that needle valve in and out so violently. I hope you haven't broken the tip of the needle valve off inside the carb. Set the needle one turn out.

I agree low speed circuit is clogged, however the choke does not bypass the circuit choking it only close the intake causing an increase of vacuum, this additional vacuum pulls the needed fuel from main circuit

...THEN, turn back the other way, finding a happy "middle ground" BETWEEN BOTH INNER & OUTER spots where motor began to idle rough. ANOTHER way, idle a slow as it will run, SLOWLY turn needle 1/4 turn at the time, waiting 10-20 seconds each turn. As motor smooths out keep throttling lower, and adjusting to compensate idle to match throttle setting. Then, use the IDLE STOP/ADJUST knob on the side to set the idle at the best- lowest setting, so you won't turn lower than that causing motor stall.

Oh, yeah. One more thing...DON'T mess with the reed valves! They are NOT the problem. They rarely are. If they weren't functioning properly, the motor would spit & pop/backfire through the intake/carburetor. You're only making a lot of work for yourself, extra expense & may actually cause damage to the reeds if you start messing around with them. You have a fuel delivery issue, not a reed issue. BTW, what is the compression? It should be at least 100 psi with not more than 5 to 10 psi difference

Yep, same as some said. Carb. If you have not already resolved the issue, it likely is the low speed circuit of the carb. Mine did the same thing. I found a blockage in the very small pick up tube that runs up the middle of the float. I however cleaned out the entire carb, but the blocked pick up tube was actually my troubles. I had to use the choke like you to stop it from stalling and would only run at higher RPMs. Once I cleaned it out, it ran like a champ.

Try replacing the fuel filter and hose. It fixed the same problem with my 1984 8hp Evinrude. As simple as that: a dirty filter.

You also need to do a de-carb (use the old spark plugs for this, because they won't be any good after the decarb. I use YAMAHA RING-FREE. It REALLY works & you'll notice a huge difference how it runs, more power, smoother idle & will even have a slightly different sound...better! Do a SHOCK TREATMENT, per the instruction on the bottle. Then, either run a maintenance dose with every tank, or do a decarb once per season, or more, if you do a lot of trolling. If you need any advice/help, l

REPLACE all FUEL LINE WITH OEM/MARINE USCG approved fuel hose. buy the proper zip straps, designed to fit around the circumference of the hose w/out pinching. Using standard zip ties will do that & cause leaks/suck air, etc. You may or may not need a fuel pump. I would replace it anyway, it's probably about shot. Buy one off eBay, new, about $40.00 Replace the spark plugs, be sure to gap @ .030 Set the LOW SPEED NEEDLE by turning it all the way in GENTLY until it stops. Back out 1.5 TO 2 TURNS.

Those little square fuel pumps don't always take well to a rebuild. It's about a 50/50 deal. I now just buy a brand new fuel pump. You can buy one off ebay, with free shipping for about $40.00 Make sure you get the right one for your motor, they do have several different types. BTW, a couple tiny drops of water in the bottom of the carburetor bowl can cause it to run horribly, make sure your fuel is not contaminated. The ethanol in todays fuels acts like a sponge, sucking moisture from the air &

between cylinders. If it's not exactly in the 5 to 10 psi difference range, don't panic. As long as it's not WAY off between the two cylinders, you'll be okay. I just finished restoring 1975 & 1981 models..compression was 135/141 on the 1981 & 145 psi on BOTH cylinders on the 1975. THAT is practically factory new readings! I've had these particular outboards with readings as low a 95 psi & still run great.

Hey unfortunately not. I'm postponing recording a possible solution. But most likely it is a dirty carburettor. I have to complete rebuild the carb. Since everything is very old or either broken. So if my advice to you. Start making sure your carb is working as it should. Clean it in a ultrasonic bath. And make sure the fuel pump is good too. That one is on this engine in bad shape too.

I had the same problem with a 1984 8hp Evinrude. I rebuilt the carburetor and used new gas without improvement. Surprisingly, the problem resolved with a new fuel filter and fuel hose.

Engine has been in storage for years unfortunatly. Recently (2 weeks) ago I removed the carb and fuel pump for a rebuild. Reason I didnt done anything about is cause I want to film rebuilding it. Wich will happen in the next months. But as many suggested here that will prob fix it. Still have to repair the thread for the startercable then.

Steve Walker I took the engine recently to someone and we tested the pressure of the chaimbers. Both slightly under 10 bar. So its still worth it. Im starting now with a carb rebuild, fuelpump rebuild and replacing the starter after that. Electrical is all ok. I will video it.

now that's what I am taking about the old school it might be the carb I can see it runs pretty good hey man instead of rebuilding your carb just get a new one and take out the old one in and put a new one in and see how it runs if you prefer to rebuild your carb that's up to you and give me an update on that 1982 15 hp and lets see how it runs after get all of that done update me if you can well I am in the same shoe your in my 1984 15 hp evinrude is not spaying water out I stuck needle in the pee hole and the exhaust tube hole some time it spays and some it don't so your are not alone good luck on your 82 15 hp Johnson buddy

Those things are over $200. Like others said....replace fuel pump(cheap),clean the carb and make sure theres no leaks in any fuel line. Mine was just like that and now it runs like a clock. Leave the reed valves alone .
