I always buy a rebuild kit. The complete kit for the motor im working on. I recommend this as the old plate is usually scored and the cup may be to. Always use marine grease in the cup when installing the impeller. This will ease insertion and help it seat and if you like to run it before you put it in the test tank it will help you not smoke the impeller. Smoking a new impeller in a ungreased cup only takes minutes and then you will be tearing it all apart again needlessly.

I enjoyed your video, I thought you were very thorough in describing each step of the installation but one step I did not understand is why you rotated the impellor clockwise when inserting it into the water pump housing. My 6 hp 1973 Johnson flywheel rotates clockwise looking down on the engine therefore I have to make sure the impellor is installed counter-clockwise (from the bottom view) so that the impellor ears are oriented properly. They should be pointing opposite to the direction of rotation.

- During re-assembly, rotate the propeller in the forward direction. Watch the driveshaft rotate, That will tell you which way the impeller rotates.

DO you need gasket sealer on the pump housing gasket or does it go on dry?

I’m as I type this putting a 5” extension kit on my 1979 6hp so I’m replacing the whole water pump assembly while it’s apart. Before doing this when I ran the motor, the pee stream was pretty week. I noticed in your video that your impeller was oriented clockwise from underneath where mine was in the counter clockwise position when I took it apart. I don’t know if someone years before me installed it wrong or it was right and your video is wrong...LOL. Guess I’ll find out because I’m putting it back together the way you say in the video.

The rubber fins will orient themselves properly regardless. If they stayed in the counter clockwise form, it wouldn’t push water.

My rollpin seems to have sheered off. At least there is just a bit of the pin left in the hole. I can remove that but have no replacement. Can you tell me where I can order one? Thanks a lot, your video's are amongst the most usefull on youtube, they're awesome.

OEM part number 0303261. You can find them on www.marineengine.com or eBay or the like. You may could get away with one from an assorted roll pin set off Amazon here amzn.to/2N7VAbC

Just bought a 1965 Johnson 6 horse with it not pumping water. Upon removing the lower unit I noticed I didn't have a roll pin in my drive shaft. Also when I removed the water pump housing there was no gasket just a metal plate. Do I need the roll pin? Do I need a gasket there since there wasn't one? Ty in advance

You don’t have to have it but it does keep pressure on a seal that prevents water from getting up there

Did you make sure you put the impeller key back in? If not the driveshaft will spin but the impeller won’t. Also make sure you get the water pump housing under water when you test it (deep bucket)

I have a evinrude 8 and my impeller is not spitting water, I took it out and it looks fine, could anything else besides the impeller be the problem?

Check the 2:40 mark in the video. Make sure you have not forgotten to install you impeller pump key and that if it’s there it’s engaging the impeller

What exactaly does that roll pin do? Mine didn't have one in it but it had the hole for it...I ordered one and put it in it...but when I took it aparte again the pin was bent..

+sc91260 if you look here goo.gl/aKKGp5 it compresses the lower bearing seal spring. Why the 6 hp has a lower bearing seal spring and not the 9.5 motors, I am not sure. If you check out the reinstall video I show you the slot the pin passes through
@thisoldoutboard7 жыл бұрын
+sc91260 I did a little more digging and found this statement "This pin is holding seal set, if you run the engine without this pin it can cause the upper seal to slide sideways and not seal. The seal keeps water from being sucked into the motor. It also seals the air/fuel mix for the bottom cylinder. It may not idle very well without that seal in place. And if you're running in salt, you'll certainly do some damage without the seal working properly."
@sc912607 жыл бұрын
Thanks...ill try putting one in again.
@thisoldoutboard7 жыл бұрын
+sc91260 I also read that it needs to be a stainless steel pin so it doesn't corrode, especially if you are in salt water

The pin makes sure the driveshaft and the Impeller spin together. If you don’t have the pin the driveshaft will spin but the Impeller wont thereby not pumping water

Twisting the impeller clockwise into the housing while you are holding it upside down will have the impeller in backward when it is installed on the motor. Sorry to have to dispute what you are telling other to do, but that is wrong. I have been doing this for more than 55 years and i know what I'm talking about. Put the impeller on the shaft first, lower the cup over it, press down gentle while turning the flywheel clockwise until the impeller is seated in the housing cup. Then lower the housing down over the impeller cup and bolt it down. Now the impeller is in correctly.
@outboardfixer5 жыл бұрын
Unless that motor turns counter clockwise that old impeller is in backwards.

Mark Weaver should it go anti-clockwise in that metal case??
