I tried to do all this on my mower following the D110 manual. Took over four times as long as this video. His instructions are exactly correct and very well organized. I’d rate this video five stars out of five. How I wish I’d seen it long ago. Thanks for the best maintenance instructions!

The comment above is very well said. Looking into your future, your attitude, skill, and organization, you are perfectly suited to enter the engineering field. There are a lot of "engineers" that have a piece of paper and do not get it, you are. I too service everything myself and make improvements. My equipment will last forever. Great Job.

Excellent video. I bought a S100 from Lowe's this year an didn't get an owners manual. This video helps a lot! I had no idea about all the grease fittings. Now I feel like I know exactly what needs to be done to get the mower ready for each season. The deck leveling instructions can be used now, because I think I'm already getting some uneven cuts. Lowe's probably didn't adjust that when they put the unit together. Thanks for posting this.

You are my HERO - highly competent and effective, positive proof "where there's a will there's a way". A little reminiscent of the long lever arms that were on the walls at the US Army Anniston Depot where tanks were manufactured and repaired in WWII, and the work force was 90% women. They made it work. I really LOVE the way you lay out what is needed for the work. The warning about CHEAP (poor quality - no other way to put it) bonnet hinges - excellent point. "If you don't, you gotta do what you gotta do" -- love it. Good to know how to remove the mower deck -- I do so seasonally as a snow blade is installed.

Great video. I believe I have a bad vacuum issue with mine and I just replaced my pump. I noticed it doesn't go toward the front of the motor to the cover, but to the oil dipstick. Does that mean I could get a no pump issue if low on oil? We need a video for just fuel pump troubleshooting on this odd motor!
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
Why do you think you have a bad bad vacuum issue? Why did you replace the fuel pump?
@theoverlanddisciple2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines no start issue, verified spark at plug, changed fuel filter. Noticed fuel didn't look like it was flowing. Arrow is in right direction replaced fuel pump, still nothing. Not sure if I just got a bad pump but I can suck/blow trace amounts of gas through it.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
Check to see if you have a electric fuel shut off valve under the carburetor. You will know you have one if you see a cylinder looking round object with a wire sticking out of it under the carburetor which is below the air filter. To check this you must have the emergency brake on and listen very carefully turn the key from off to on and listen for a click at the solenoid. keep turning the key often on and you should hear that click if you do not you may have bad wiring or a bad fuel shut off solenoid. Fuel pumps hardly ever go bad. Also check to make sure your fuel cap vent is clear
@theoverlanddisciple2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines thanks I'll check those things. I did have the electric fuel shut off and I pulled it off and removed the black tip to ensure fuel would flow, but I never saw anything. I kept trying to "prime" it so to speak and the motor locked up! I did hear a loud bang, so I'm sure I slung a rod. May be the end for this old gal! 🤣
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
Pull the spark plug out and see if the engine will crank over make sure the ignition wire is away from the spark plug hole and if fuel comes out of the hole then you have a Carburetor issue. If nothing comes out of the hole then you may have a locked motor.

I just got this same mower 2nd hand, 200 hrs, engine, transmission everything looks really clean. it was taken care of. used it a couple of times on my front yard which has in semi steep incline. For some reason now it wont go up the incline, even when deck is not down, or it goes real slow. I dont want to have to take it in since i just paid for it. Do you have any idea what I need to look at to fix this? the fan also looks new. so prob not that. Only thing ive done is change front tired to new. I didnt grease them
@JohnsonsSmallEngines4 ай бұрын
You describe a transmission failing. The only thing you can try is a new transmission belt (check idler pulley too) and if that doesn't work the transmission is bad. If the transmission fan looks to be new and someone tried to repair a bad transmission at some point, you may have purchased the machine with a bad transmission. You wouldn't know it was bad until you ran it on your hills.

Make sure the engine speed is at full when your running the deck or the deck will shake more. Did it shake from new?? If yes then most likely it’s a normal shake. If no then what happened to make it shake? The S100 is a very generic tractor, lighter weight, thinner material that may make it shake more then a heavier gauge machine.

? Making sure the oil was filled properly I’ve noticed when engaging PTO a large amount of black smoke came out from right side of engine. Any suggestions.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines7 ай бұрын
Black smoke normally means to much gas. Maybe your running with the throttle in the choke position or the choke is sticking in the on position. Also too much oil is not good. Make sure the oil level is between the dots on the oil dip stick.

I have a rattling noise when I take by foot off the left brake pedal on my John Deere LA110. What do you think I should check first? I thought it may have some to do with the Hydrostatic drive belt belt pullies. My mower is about 16 years old but it pretty good shape. Thanks in advance!
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, you are correct. If your left pedal which is the clutch/brake pedal shakes a little bit or you do hear a rattle of some sort. That usually means you either have a bad spot in the transmission drive belt that’s making it rattle or pulleys that have worn funny through the years or worst case scenario you may have a transmission drive pulley that is now loose and rattling around. All which can be repaired. I would first look at your drive pulleys where the drive belt runs and replace if necessary. If you’ve never replaced the drive belt or the drive pulleys in 16 years I would say it’s due. You can also check the rear transmission drive pulley by engaging the emergency brake (All while the engine is OFF)get your hand up near the pulley and try to move it up and down. If there is a lot of play up and down your transmission drive pulley may need to be replaced. But I have not done many of the transmission (itself)drive pulley through 30 years of business.

Brad, I have a question about my 2012 John deere D110 tractor, the 2 pullies for the main drive belt,I can't seem to get the bolt to come out, it just spins clear through around and around,I bought myself a air ratchet,having trouble getting with the pully bolt, thanks,mack.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Жыл бұрын
One is a carraige bolt, try and pull down on the pulley while you are taking off the nut so the square part of the bolt sits in the arm locked in. I think the other has a stud welded to the plate so that nut should just come off. Are you having issues with both? or just the one with a carraige bolt?

Does the D110 have a plastic transmission? Does it need any regular maintenance?

Hi, after replacing both spindles, blades and idler pulleys and after attaching to tractor I noticed that little 1" square pulley brake pad on the ground, is it worthwhile to jb weld it back on or just chunk it in the tool box? There's what appears to be 2 10mm brass adjustment nuts on that bar that runs to each drive pulley any insights on how close that bar without the pad should be from the pulley? Do those 10mm nuts tend to back out over time? Thanks for the video.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
I would just replace the brake. JB weld will not work. I personally tighten the 10mm nuts so the brake is just working when you disengage the mower deck. Then when the brakes wear you will need to back off the 10mm nuts to allow the brake to seat on the pulley to perform there job. The nuts are locking nuts and they should not loosen where you adjust them. Please give this video a like/thumbs up, subscribe and tell your friends about my channel to help it grow. It would be greatly appreciated

Excellent instruction video! One question; what did you do when "you engaged and disengaged the deck"? How did you do this, please??? Got me stumped on what you actually did! Appreciate your advice. Cheers from Down Under.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Thanks for your reply - I think you were meaning just applying the blade operation lever when you were installing the deck belt - so doing so was just to take up tension in the belt? Also (because I tend to be heavy handed when tightening up nuts etc, I always use a torque wrench - got myself into much trouble in the past by not using one)! So, can you please tell me what the correct JD D110 nut torques are for the spindle pully nut and the four spindle to deck screws which can't find posted anywhere on the net and JD wants $140 for the service manual; which IMO is just plain extortion!!!! Appreciate your help please. Cheers, Ian

I only use a torque wrench on items that must be torqued per instructions. The only way you will be able to find the torque values on every nut and bolt is to find a torque value chart for nuts and bolts. Then you will need to find out what size bolt or nut and the hardness of the bolt or nut, then go to the chart for the torque. I would suggest trying find a chart online to help you.

I noticed in this video you used regular motor oil. And not JD turf guard. I own a E 100 series always using JD oil. I live in Orlando, temperatures always in the 90s. What SAE oil can I use? Turf Guard oil is expensive. Also, have you any videos on the JD LT-190 series. I feel like I just went to JD maintenance college. Thank you for your response.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
You can use pretty much any good motor oil. I feel as long as you’re changing the oil on a regular basis Andy oil filter if you have one your engine will be fine. I have yet to see an LT 190 in my shop.

@JohnsonsSmallEngines2 жыл бұрын
John Deere recommends after the first 8 hrs. Then it’s up to you but I would recommend at least once a season/year or every 30 to 50 hrs. Make you also replace the oil filter at the same time.
