Thank you for this clear and informative video. I'm a 77 year old pensioner and I thought this might be the end of the tractor. Our local John Deere dealer charges $200 an hour plus parts and labour (Canada). I'm partially crippled and although I have to engineer my body to perform tasks that I thought were simple not too long ago, thanks to your help I'll have that good little tractor back and running after the weekend. Thanx so much.

YES! I'm a 72-year-old woman who lives about 45 minutes away from a John Deere repair shop. The labor and travel costs would have been outrageous so I found your video. I have a John Deere D125. I call it my "Jane Doe," since its size pales in comparison with my neighbors' tractors. Your instructions were amazing. The only issue I had was the way the spring was attached in the back. It was wrong side up and I couldn't get the angle right to remove it. I loosened up "something" and was finally able to get it out. Other than that, everything went smoothly. It isn't any fun, though. Some of those areas are really difficult to reach. I just went out and made a stripe in the middle of my field. It works!!!! Thank you so much. And that attachment to the spring that broke is a piece of doo-doo.

Thanks to your video, I was able to knock this out in about 20 minutes. I hit some snags trying to remove the old one out. Putting the new one in went super easy. I found it easier to remove the 10mm in the rear. I did this on a John Deere D125 and that part is for that lawnmower as well.

This is an incredibly well done video! Thank you. I followed it carefully to install a new cable on a JD 120. The only difference I found was a second clip attachment to the frame. Great video, it made me much more confident about replacing the cable on my D130 and your reference to the part number gave me confidence that I had bought the right part even though it looked different. I encountered two minor differences and one problem. The two differences were that the black trim panel on my D130 does not extend so far forward as the one in your video, also my D130 has an extra cable clip on the frame a bit further back directly above the mower deck (I found that fairly easily) it is a hook type clip so was able to route the new cable through it. The main problem I had to overcome was the spring. My old spring was much smaller and instead of a hook on the end it has a sort of snake head end that had to be wiggled through a hole (not a slot) in the tension pully arm . Managed to make the new larger spring fit with a grinder. I ground down the hook shortening it by about 1/3" and tapering the end so it would push down into the hole. I expect getting it out again is going to be a real b***h, so I am not looking forward to servicing the mower deck next year.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Жыл бұрын
I’m glad you were able to get the job done ✅. I would hope the new cable would last more than a year! Hopefully your won’t need to do it that soon. Thank you for watching. @@JohnsonsSmallEngines Oh I expect it will last at least 10 years like the previous one. My concern is unhooking the now modified spring to remove the mower deck for servicing which I do every year at the start of the new growing season. It took a lot of effort to get the ground down spring hook into the hole so it will not be easy to get it out again.

Well done :). I made the classic mistake of stopping the video once I thought I had all the facts and then spent a few minutes puzzling over why the silver bolt housing wouldn't slip back on the shaft, lol...bungee still deployed , DERP! Note to self watch the whole video :). My D105 does have the adjustable stub on the deck but I have never taken the time to find out how tight the belt should be when activated. I have larger clipping sizes than what I opine should be there with two blades chopping so may look for some adjustment advice. Once again, well done. Subscribed

Great video Brad, very informative and easy to follow. While changing my cable I ran into a problem I cant seem to solve. My old cable snapped at the spring, so I ordered the same part number for the replacement. I installed it the same way you did in this video, but when I pulled the level to engage the pto afterward, it only seems to move the pulley arm about half the distance it needs to move to engage the mower deck. Its almost as if the cable is too long. If I reach under and pull on the spring manually the mower engages as its supposed to until I let go and release the manual tension. My mower deck is also one like the video that doesn't have an adjustable tensioner for the cable. Is there something I'm missing here? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you order the same part number from your old cable? Or did you use the cable part number in my video? Because you may not have purchased the correct cable for your certain model even though you said, it’s the same one. I always double check the part number to the specific model that I am working on to make sure I get the correct part. that is all that makes sense. Other than the possibility. The belt is too long now, but that doesn’t make any sense did it stretch, doubtful. I would double check with your specific model on the John Deere website or contact John Deere just to make 100% sure that you have the correct part. Sometimes there may be a serial number break that is needed to get the correct part. John Deere would be able to help with that better than me.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Thanks for the quick reply. I ordered the right part based on the number from the Deere dealer, which was also confirmed when I pulled the old one off and it was stamped in the jacket of the old one. Even the service dept at my local dealer doesn't understand why its not just a simple in and out so I've been checking the internet for someone who may have had a similar situation. I've been trying to avoid bringing it to the dealer because of the lengthy downtime it'll cause but its starting to look like that's the best option. Thanks for the help!

I just put that cable on my D100. I bought an entire new deck and after I got it I found out it needed this type of cable. My original cable just inserted on that end where the spring is and the spring was not even half that size. I don't know why they made that spring so large. I've spent over a grand with the new deck and this cable around 1,040 bucks, but I didn't want to buy an entire new mower since the old deck was pretty much trash with too many problems to fix. It does seem to engage the blades correctly but I haven't had time to mow with it yet. Probably do that on Monday afternoon.

Excellent video, I have a D120 and the head of the cable that fits in the bracket on the deck ( mine is adjustable) seperated from the cable, so need to replace cable, want to say everything on the D120 is smaller as Spring on deck only one and small also no return spring on bracket that holds holds engagement pulley. I also need to replace one spindle but Deere only provides Self Tapping bolts and mine has bolt and lock nut

How can you adjust the belt tension on this model where the cable bracket is welded instead of having the screws you can loosen?
@JohnsonsSmallEngines

There is no adjustment. It is the spring that puts tension on the belt when the blades are engaged.

Great video, thank you. I don't need to replace the cable yet, but my problem is that the blade engagement handle is so hard to engage on my L110 JD (bought in 2003). It's like at the other end the idler on the deck doesn't want to engage smoothly and sometimes it puts a lot of pressure on the little bolt/screw and lock nut that holds the lever arm of the handle that it breaks that screw and I've replaced that screw many times. Is the problem the idler or other pulley on the deck? I don't know why the blade engagement handle is so hard to push up and begin the blade action. Any experience with this problem at your shop? Thank you for any advice you have.
@JohnsonsSmallEngines
@JohnsonsSmallEngines Жыл бұрын
Disconnect the cable from the mower deck. After disconnecting, see if it it easy or not? If it is easy, your mower deck blade brake arms or the blade engagement arm is sticking. If the cable is tight after disconnecting from the mower deck? Your cable needs to be replaced.

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines the blade engagement handle to the cable is easy to push up without the cable connected to the deck. This means I should look at some you tube channels to see how to fix the blade brake arms or blade engagement arm? Where is the blade engagement arm? I'm not sure which part you are meaning. I haven’t come across a cable that comes out if the slot when blades are engaged. If you can get a close up short video of it happening and send it to my email. I can take a look. I would say either the hole has worn larger or bracket pivot has worn. Impossible to figure it out without seeing the machine.

Those cables do not adjust. Depending on the mower deck. There maybe a bracket that holds the cable to the deck that is adjustable. Most decks did not have that option. Most likely you need a new mower deck belt if the blades do not engage when the PTO handle is engaged or you have other issues.
