I'm using Aquarian texture coated heads on the top and bottom of both toms. The tops and bottoms are tuned to approx. the same pitch. When I'm tuning the drums I'm going for the sound Philly Jo Jones or Max Roach got.

Great lesson! I was looking for new ideas for jazz fills and this was very useful lesson. That stick on stick technique gave me a whole new bunch of ideas. Also the fill at 0:43 is mind-blowing :) Gotta practice it...

I'm just learning how to play jazz. Your lessons are really helping me a lot. Who are some good jazz artist/bands I can listen to?
@JohnXDrumLessons11 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your positive comment. The cymbals are all Zildjian Constantinople. 14" hi-hata, 22" Med. Thin Low on my right, 20" Med. Thin Low with two rivets on my left.

I couldn't tell what i do exactly. However, I can say the the overall tuning of the hi tom is about an octave higher than the drum would normally tune to with the top and bottom heads tuned to about the same tension.

The key to jazz soloing and trading 4's or 8's is to have a vocabulary of two bar fills that you can play and combine to create your solos. Keep watching, I'll be sharing many more.

Great drum tones wow, what's the tom tuning?
@dividedwords11 жыл бұрын
That arrangement seems to have a somewhat lower pitch than I associate with Max or Philly Joe. Perhaps those heads or the drums they're on, bring out a lower overtone. They have a wonderfully short note, too. I like that.

Thanks for the nice comment. I'm glad you dig the "stick on stick" technique. It's one of my favorite jazz fill techniques. Thanks to Philly Jo Jones, Buddy Rich, Max Roach and all of the other Jazz legends.

I'm in my schools jazz band and of course there are fills in the drum set music and I was wondering if you had any tips about coming up with fills individually/on the spot, cause this is my second year with them and still in 8th grade but I'm pretty advanced in my percussion area but my fills usually sound like I'm just hitting random drums and sounds kinda messy sometimes and I don't wanna keep relying on fills made up by other people or rely on using a week to come up with something pleasing
