OMG this is SO HELPFUL! I volunteered to sub for a friend for big band jazz and the conductor put me on the spot to do 4 bars of drum solo repeatedly. I was clueless and later discovered it's called "Trading fours". This video is so helpful because it demonstrates the context. I'm hoping to be more prepared for next week's rehearsal with this helpful video!

a b0bfelice Trading fours ... when I first started playing, I didn’t know what to do. A good friend told me that I needed to develop a series of two bar fills and four bar fills then commit them to memory. Good luck at your next rehearsal. God bless, John X

Great lessons ! I wonder what is your opinion on keeping the foot hh on 2 and 4 going during the four bar fill ?
@JohnXDrumLessons8 жыл бұрын
That is an excellent question. I used to think that I always had to play the hi-hat on 2 and 4 during a fill. Then, after spending a lot of time with my good friend and great jazz drummer, Colin Bailey, I came to realize that you only need to play the hi-hat when it's comfortable and it feels good. Don't obsess over it like I did in my earlier days.

@dunkdriver197211 жыл бұрын
Hi there John, great video's, i'm fast becoming fluent in all these fills due to your great teaching methods!!! One question though.... i've been learning these fills whilst keeping the hi-hat rolling on 2+4, would you consider this incorrect as i just noticed you're not and if so is there any particular reason?
@JohnXDrumLessons11 жыл бұрын
I'll play the hi hat on 2&4 most of the time. However, it's not always necessary. The fills in this series felt better with out the hi-hat so I left it off.
