Gamefreak, what a rollercoaster ride! Pokemon on Nintendo Switch saw heights with Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and many Pokemon spinoffs like New Pokemon Snap and Pokemon Unite. Companies like GameFreak, Bandai Namco, and Ilca Inc all gave their takes on the franchise!
Pokemon on Nintendo Switch also suffered some lows with Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl as well as the controversy of Pokemon Sword and Shield national dex cut. Is Pokemon failing? I would call this the "Proto-Renaissance"-Era of Pokémon. On the one hand, it's the dark era because of the low quality of many games, but on the other hand, the games introduced many innovative new aspects to the franchise: free roaming Pokémon, free camera, open-world, raids, coop. So after these first rocky attempts, maybe the games for the next generation consoles can build up on the Switch games and start a true Pokémon Renaissance after what the 3DS era which to me is the Dark Era of Pokémon.

To me, the 3DS was the pre dark era and the Switch was the dark ages for Pokémon. While the 3ds was more limited graphically, they did uphold a standard. All Pokémon in the games, exp share being toggleable, set and switch mode still exist, the intro to megas, regional forms, etc.. They’re huge mixed bags but the bag is at least mixed. With the switch Pokémon era, any quality standard Pokémon had was completely abandoned. The best of the bunch was legends arceus which is quite sad considering legends arceus was a buggy borderline tech demo. Hell, Let’s Go being essentially the best regular Pokémon game on the switch is a sign of just how poorly the brand was treated. That’s not even touching the sheer travesty of the other 3 switch mainline Pokémon games. I wouldn’t say a single Pokémon game on the switch deserved to be priced at 60 dollars, dlc or not, 30 at most, and that’s being real generous considering how there’s so many better games for so much less.

@@thecod2345 no way, the 3DS games only made every aspect of the game they could worse, it was the start of the casualization, cut corners and the cynicism of Game Freak. So what that the games were more polished, they weren't trying anything really that exciting. XY are basically classic Pokémon but in 3D, with less soul, worse in every game design aspect, and casualized. SM have terrible game design, bad world design, bad pacing, bad regional dex Pokémon. I'm a big critic of SWSH, those games were lazy and cynical, but even those offered features that were much more exciting like free roaming Pokémon, the wild area, raids, the best gym atmosphere and Pokémon league in the series. If you played Monster Hunter Stories on 3DS, you know all those features could've been introduced in the 3DS games. There is very little legacy from the 3DS games, in 10 years there will be little reason to replay them other than nostalgia, they don't offer many unique things that were well executed. The Switch games at least innovated in many aspects, and if they get next-gen upgrades, PLA and SV will be remembered amongst the best games in the series. PLA wasn't buggy at all, the game is well polished and has good performance, its biggest technical problems are just aggressive pop-in and low resolution textures.

@@johtojonny I think the DS era was the Golden Era of Pokémon, it had all the best games. GB-GBA are Genesis to me. Renaissance is a rebirth, something that used to be great, got bad, and then great again. I think the Pokémon Renaissance is yet to come.

A keyword you used in this video is "experimentation" the problem with this is that pokemon as a franchise cashes in so much money that the "experimentation" aspect of their games feel like a cop out to cut on production and polish because they know they got an absurdly dedicated fanbase that'll shill for them no matter what

I would literally cry if they did an explorers of sky remake. There are few games that have tugged my heartstrings like MD2. I played Darkness and Sky and spent sooo many hours on them. I've cried more than once playing those games. Many have no idea how amazing those games are.

The Switch era is definitely unforgettable. We got precious jewels in Legends Arceus and Scarlet Violet and we got nasty garbage in BDSP and with some interesting things going on with the series as a whole like talks within TPC about quality as well as some serious competition with PalWorld who took over the world in only days the future for the series is already quite interesting to watch unfold in front of us! Plus the new Nintendo console is probably going to get announced this year so more spice will get added in whatever GameFreak is cooking next! Let see what happens everybody! 😊

@@johtojonny we felt that way when we heard it was going to be on a real console. We got 3ds games, barely working 3ds games at that, on switch. If, game freak comes out with a Mario odyssey level game, which we all know it won’t, it’ll be at the end of the next gen console lifetime. At best. But we know. Deep down, we are getting 3ds lvl games on the next console of nintyby game freak. When we do, I hope you remember this comment.

This has been such a throwback! The Pokemon Switch era was like going through a storm to me, and it's great that it ended with its integrity still intact after the storm. I was about to say I can't wait for the next mainline title, but for real tho, I won't mind a long wait this time. 2026 is gonna be Pokemon's 30th anniversary. You can expect Gen X is gonna premiere that year. Being 3 years in advance, I wonder how the Pokemon Company is gonna deal with its yearly releases if they still have to stick to it. What mainline titles would they release in 2024 & 2025? Remakes of Gen 2 and/or Gen 5? If not, are they gonna take a long hiatus instead? Nintendo will be expecting them to release a game to support their newest console rumored to come this year tho. 🤔

well we are definitely getting a mainline game this year though what form it will take is unknown, there's been lots of talk about a new legends game either set in Johto or Unova, or a new Let's Go or even BW remakes (though this is the least likely to me imo, but who knows)

I do think it'll probably be a remake/revisit of sorts and I think Buizel is right that 2026 will likely see the release of gen 10. I feel like the series can only go up from here so I'm excited. They must have learned a lot from the switch era and a more powerful console should make it easier on them to run their games smooth

I honestly have no clue what game they'll start with. Insider info says SV dlc was our Unova revisit so more likely a Johto remake but Pokemon likes to be unpredictable so who knows. They might also skip the first year like they did with Switch so we might not see a game til 2025. GameFreak has been fighting for longer dev time so we'll see if their release schedule stays the same

@@johtojonny my idea is that we get a new game this year, possibly Legends or something like that and in 2025 that game gets DLC so they would be able to maintain the consistent schedule and that would in turn allow the Gen 10 game a bit more time to cook and Gen 10 being in 2026 would make sense to coincide with the 30th anniversary, much like how Sun and Moon celebrated the 20th whereas if Gen 10 came out in 2025 then we'd just get DLC in 2026 and as cool as DLC is to have that isn't very celebratory. Let Game Freak cook! Though when it comes to Nintendo's next console they still haven't unveiled it so that leaves Pokemon in an interesting position, surely the next console isn't very far off right? Has to be either this year or next surely.

I completely agree with you about Scarlet and Violet, technical issues aside they are FANTASTIC games comfortably among my favourites alongside Legends Arceus and Black and White 2 and it's some of the most fun I've ever had playing Pokemon, I think giving us more freedom to explore and do what we want really went a long way and yet the open world didn't negatively affect the storytelling as SV gave us one of the best stories in the series and I bring this up because BOTW is an absolute masterpiece but I think the one thing that it did stumble with was it's story so I'm glad that didn't happen here as the story is one of the most important things in a video game for me and SV really impressed me in that aspect and I really felt connected to all of the characters! As for the other games: Let's Go, Pikachu and Eevee are definitely fun and worked as a way to get newcomers into the series (and judging by the SWSH and SV player numbers that definitely worked!) though as a result didn't have a lot to it but they were fine! SwSh are really underrated, they do have issues and the story that isn't the gym challenge (the gym challenge itself is amazing!) was lackluster in the base game but I can't help but feel really charmed by Sword and Shield and weirdly I feel kinda nostalgic despite them only being just over 3 years old though I might be biased as I am british and Galar is based on the UK which made me so happy and so I definitely have a soft spot but SwSh is definitely elevated by the excellent DLC which I'm glad that Game Freak have chosen to do instead of enhanced versions, I think that's objectively better both in terms of price and it makes more sense! And SwSh's DLC really expanded on the games and gave us a lot more things to do and story to get our teeth sunk into - particularly The Crown Tundra (I LOVE Peony!!). Now about BDSP I'm going to say it: BDSP get way more hate than they deserve. Now: is it disappointing that more Platinum stuff wasn't included? Absolutely. But as faithful remakes of the original Diamond and Pearl I think they do a really good job and are better than the original Diamond and Pearl (I stress the original DP, not Platinum) particularly when it comes to the speed of the game which was flat out painful in the originals, whereas BDSP move at a clip which is so much nicer, and the art style is really cute too, I think it's really charming. Legends Arceus is Legends Arceus, it's so SO good - best mainline Pokemon game. Hands. Down! And I already talked about Scarlet and Violet but yeah... loved it! Here's my ranking of all of the mainline Switch Pokemon games (so far): 1. Legends Arceus 2. Scarlet and Violet 3. Sword and Shield 4. BDSP 5. Let's Go, Pikachu and Eevee I definitely had fun with all of these games though some are definitely better than others and this is pretty much how I feel! Overall it's been an era of Pokemon that I think has gotten better over time and I love the direction Pokemon is heading in, I'm really excited for what's next. All Pokemon needs to do is improve further particularly with graphics and performance and we'll be golden and if so Gen 10 might end up being the best yet but only time will tell! And I don't think we won't see another PMD game again, I think we will, the PMD games have never been massive sellers but 2 million is still decent even if not a huge success.

The National Dex cut was a lot bigger then everyone thought! Pokemon Sword and Shield still do look like a HD 3Ds game honestly but man I would say performance is better then Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. You do make a good point how Pokemon in the Switch era it definitely was experimental! I'm still salty on BDSP and I would consider it a garbage remake. Who knows what the future holds for Pokemon I'm semi optimistic but not fully if I'm being honest especially how I would love to see more Pokemon Legends games.

So far we've learned from interviews that they sometimes have alright explanations for doing smth, but also very baffling & nonsensical reasonings at the same time like cutting Gorochu due to the limited cartridge space (ok understandable)..as well as balancing (wtf, this is G1 where balanced is a word that can't used too much) or decision of forgoing Natdex cuz too many Pkmn exist (yeah sure makes sense) & they felt the need to add on that they were busy redoing the models (liars). Stuff like these makes them look like bunch of morons who dont know what they're saying & if it's right or not.

I really hope that the Nintendo Switch era turns out to be the awkward teenage years of 3D Pokémon games. The 3DS was about getting all the models for the Pokémon and slowly moving away from grid-based movement and the chibi artstyle. The Switch era seems more concerned about exploring how an actual open world would work in a Pokémon game and how they could catch up with the rest of the industry.

Man, the catching mechanic of Let's Go works properly and it is fun. The problem is that most people simply didn't pointed the controller to the TV before pressing the throw button which gave the controller a wrong point of reference to begin with. I really annoys me when people say it doesn't function because 95% of the time, they were simply doing it wrong.

I hope we get more games with action/adventure elements like Legends Arceus, where wild Pokémon can attack trainers! I hope trainers NPCs can also get attacked by wild Pokémon and we can save them by catching or defeating the mons! Although I’m sure that’ll never happen. I also hope it remains open world with an open camera, but I’d be fine if they were siphoned off into zones (and we’d be able to go from zone to zone without restrictions other than landscape). These are just some of my hopes for the future of Pokémon.

I still have some deluded hope that we’ll get Explorers DX. Looking at the timeline, we got Super Mystery Dungeon in 2015. Rescue Team DX in 2020. It’s only been 4 years. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if it took a similar development time for Explorers DX. Looking at the level of effort Spike Chunsoft put into Rescue Team DX, I think they’d do the same for Explorers DX. And it’ll definitely be worth the wait.

It was an interesting era. I enjoyed LGPE, it came out while i was in the army (its mandatory in my country) so it was something fun to look forward to. i really invested in SWSH, while not perfect, it captured my imagination and i loved raids and Wild area. The dlcs were fun to replay in a new file from scratch and its the game that introduced me to competitive battling. I enjoyed Legends a lot!! I really want new better legends games in the future. It runs so smoothly. BDSP dissapointed me to no end, really wanted new forms for the sinnoh starters for years. Still, a chibi game (but good looking this time) is not something i would not want again. SV...well, i like it and still play it, but something is off and i cant wait for next releases. It lacks something for me, idk. Pokemon Unite is a game i enjoy a lot with my friends and have sinked tons of hours in, i hated it at first, but i love it now.

I'd honestly rather they kept the lackluster models/animations for the Pokemon if they could still have every past mon in the latest games. Pokemon is all about catching, raising and bonding with these creatures. It seriously saddens me that nobody cares about that aspect anymore. I don't play the latest games anymore if they don't include my top favorite mainstay. Even then, a good chunk of my favorites I've raised from past games still can't be used in SV, now that it's all done and over with.

Pokemon Legends Arceus was so peak we need another game like this. scarlet and violet gameplay is amazing but they screwed up in the presentation so much. I believe the next era will be much better than the switch era. They know what fans what, they know what they can do, they know what they can improve on, and they will have a more powerful console to work on next.

I hope the next era of pokemon games finally take the next step and become GOTY contenders. I'm not playing any more pokemon games until they are of high quality. Switch has such great looking games like the xenoblade series, botw, smt 5. Pokemon games aren't even close despite the high budget and sales of the games.

I’m playing let’s go right now in a singles match. They brought a zapdos, alolan muk, poliwrath, snorlax, mega aero, khan. Still the best online for 6v6. Hands down better than 100% of the rest of switch games.

Last year after seeing the trailers for Scarlet and Violet I got interested, but after hearing about those games' problems I got kind of reluctant. I had already decided that Violet would be my choice if I was going to get one of them. I played Let's go Pikachu and was soo disappointed about the BDSP games that I skipped both of them. I wanted a pokemon game for the Switch that didn't only have gen 1 pokemon, no random encounters, and would have gym battles. I had fun playing Legends Arceus, and I didn't try SW or SH either because of those games' problems so a few weeks ago I decided to use some of my own money to get Violet instead of waiting for it to be a Christmas or birthday gift. I've been having fun playing it mostly because of the good things about it, and I think that it's my favorite game from that franchise. So far I've only seen the slow-motion and pop-in glitches, (none of the worse ones that were also talked about online.) I think that I possibly will try to get the DLC, but I'm just not yet sure when. I do hope that better quality pokemon games will get made for Nintendo's upcoming next console.

Considering this is the we must release a game per year, the switch era is probably not over, they'll show something for the switch next month for sure. Pokemon tends to lag behind on nintendo consoles, BW was not for the 3DS, so even if nintendo shows a new system, chances are the new pokemon game will still be for the switch.

After playing Legends Arceus and Scarlet, I will say... I'd rather have the stationery camera. I guess i'm used to it and it seems like an unneeded change. I know some people can feel trapped with being unable to move the camera, but changing the camera angle is annoying. It can range from a nuisance having to change it every 30 seconds to almost detrimental (throwback to me adjusting the camera during the Kleavor fight, which is really easy if I wasn't fiddling with the camera to understand where I was). Well I do see the benefits of it, especially with overworld pokemon in Arceus where they will literally try to murder you from behind. Maybe there should be an option to have a stationery camera. Also Red & Blue rescue team DESERVED that remake. I did play through Explorers of Time... tbh I forgot the story of that (I do remember liking it, but I never completed it). It did bring good quality of life changes though and I love seeing the new generation. But yeah, I wish more people appreciated the Red & Blue remakes because I just want more Mystery Dungeon stuff... but after the explorer series, I feel like the series fell off.

I love the dex cut. If they are cutting more pokemon they should not just cut rarely used pokemon. I want them to not bring Garchomp, Genie pokemon and those are always used in VGC.

Pokemon always had amazing story, great in game mechanics and amazing pokemon designs. the only complaint I have is the graphics and the bugs. can the environment please look pretty.

Yeah. I mean I think SwSh had pretty environments outside of the og wild area (even the dlc areas looked better) and Legends Arceus had gorgeous environments pretty much everywhere imo. SV looked good some spots but yeah the lack of an art style really brings it down

@@johtojonny yes exactly. up until SwSh I never had any complaints about "graphics" in a pokemon game (except that one tree lol). But legends arceus had me going: some areas are pretty especially the flower meadows and the sky was amazing. but other areas are downright awful looking. same with SV. pokemon and human textures were fine but the environmental textures were really unpleasing to look at.

Gen 1 let’s go is amazing for what it was. We didn’t get let’s go gen 2 and that’s the problem. For a one to one game, it was perfect. Catching was meh. Also it worked perfectly. You just didn’t do it right. I have a 100% catch on throw one or two at worst. 9k caught for my shiny dex with perfect stats. Literally easier than any Pokémon game once you knew the throw.

I will say, the only low that was not ok was BDSP, it was not bad conceptually, but just needed more to it, and I understand wanting better graphics, all that said, everyone was way too harsh on the switch games, they were fine games, SV being the gold standard I want for main pokemon games

I missed all the ups of the switch generation only saw the downs with bad game after bad game. It was just really disappointing to be a pokemon fan this console generation. Like how did we get so many pokemon games with not a single one of them good that's insanity

When people say SV could've been the best game with time in the oven I'm here thinking that couldn't any Pkmn game be the best if *this*, *this* & *this* happened & went right? The exceptions to that would've to be LGPE & BDSP cuz they need to be a completely different game for them to ever reach that pedestal.

Can't really say I've noticed any patching in scarlet and violet and I've been playing it from day one. In fact, it has gotten worse! As if running at 20fps wasn't enough, the indigo disk dlc runs at 15 most of the time with constant 1-second freezes in the terrarium! Performance-wise it's undoubtedly the worst Pokemon game in history, only rivaled by sun/moon when there were multiple moltres on screen. It was also the first time i've noticed a game's performance get continuously worse through subsequent DLCs.

To me, Scarlet and Violet were disappointing, even without the bugs. The world and map design was poor, and I found the tasks you do whenever you in each area to be boring. I also really don't like how modern Pokemon games cram so much useless dialog into every conversation. I do see why some people might like it, getting to know the characters better and all. As for the next Pokemon game, I'm guessing we will get one more Unova inspired remake on the Switch this fall. I don't think it's going to be a direct remake this time. I think after BDSP, that ship has sailed.

I approuve what you said on legend arceus,but not on SV. Gosh those games are boring. Cut scenes after cut scenes that make the games unplayable. The graphical aspect of a game is not something I really look forward,but the overall was so disgusting. The content in the overworld was also really bad. No exploration,no real challenging battles,not really any mystery. The main characters look was bland. The shool uniform are so boring. But one of the worst thing of those games are the pokémon themselves. I could't even have a full team of pokémon I like. The starters where the worst ever in my opinion. Therefore,the Fueccoco line and the Quaxly line have been growing on me a little since. Where are the epic menacing monsters whe've add in every generations before? No pokémon of this new génération looks menacing like Nidoking,Dragonite, Tyranitar,Charizard or even Hydreigon. I think Baxcalibur is the only one that can be consider like this. Even ghost types are not menacing anymore. We all love Gengar, that's because he is cool looking and menacing,like ghost should be. Instead we got Goldhengo.The definition of disgusting pokémon. He look like the ficello character. We also got a dog based on bread. That was bad design after bad design. So for me,SV is right up there with Sun and Moon for the worst generation.

Scarlet and violet is still a barely functioning glitchy mess of a game. The whole game (especially the lake) is constantly glitching with lighting and models. It loads inexcusably slow, and even after the so called "fix" it cannot hold a steady frame rate. The story is also a mess and doesn't even conclude in the base game, you need to buy the DLC for that. Which comes down to a rough total of $95, which is insanely expensive for such a poorly optimized tech demo. I genuinely feel betrayed by Nintendo, with their philosophy of: It's Pokémon, so it will sell no matter what. This is not about designs, Gen9 has some really good pokémon, but that is no excuse for a bad game.

What? S/V story is good, but is nowhere near one of the best in videogames. Any Xenoblade Chronicles has a better story in one chapter only than S/V has in its entire length, the story is decent. I'll give it that.
