Join me for a Tree Planting at a Local Park!

In this video, we planted two new native trees - a Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica) and a Common Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) tree. The Black Gum (Black Tupelo) produces abundant flowers that bees love, and the Common Hackberry makes berries that attract a wide variety of birds! I hope the video was informative and showed good information about how to plant a tree properly.

Hi, this might be off topic but it is still about trees. How much of the tree mass comes from the soil and how much from the air? Is there any study on that? For example, two essential tree components - carbon and nitrogen - in which proportion does a tree suck them from soil and in which from air? Is it only roots that supply these ingredients? Or can the tree accumulate them through leaves, stems or bark? I know that the water goes through roots, but again in which proportion? And above all, water is hydrogen and oxygen, and these elements do not contribute much to tree mass. Or I am mistaken :-)

There was a famous experiment where a tree was weighed in a pot,then weighed again after growth. The total mass increased, showing it was water, Co2 and photosynthesis that increased the total mass. Trees do not eat soil to gain mass as we eat food.
