Join us as we celebrate the first bears to our new sanctuary!

As the setting sun shines through white fluffy clouds and onto the national park, this beautiful world is their world now. We drive through the gates towards smiling happy faces of a team unashamedly excited and emotional. Welcoming the first two bears home to our Bach Ma Bear Rescue Centre, and celebrating a Vietnam rescue by a Vietnam team.
Their first walk out of the farm cage, their first nibble of delicious fruit and veg, and their first steps into a sanctuary that will end bear bile farming in Vietnam forever.
This is the moment to celebrate, just as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin celebrated 50 years ago on the lunar landing, this week has seen one small step for a moon bear and one giant leap for moonkind. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

So much love ❤. But if it’s illegal in Vietnam, why can’t you just go and get all of the bears and the farmers prosecuted?

Hi Lynn, great question. So while bear bile farming in Vietnam is illegal, keeping bears isn't. Therefore we (with the Vietnamese Forest Protection Department) have to negotiate with and persuade the owners of the bears to hand them over voluntarily. If there is evidence the owners are still extracting bile, this is a different story and they could be prosecuted, though Animals Asia doesn't get involved with this as it is a Vietnamese legal issue - we are focused solely on getting the bears out alive and safe to our sanctuary. To convince farmers, we have to maintain their trust. We must continue to be able to engage and work with them because at the moment that is how bears’ lives are being saved. It's the reason why we do much education in places like Phung Thuong (where there are still a large number of active farms) to win sustainable support for the bears. In addition, we simply don't have space at the moment to rescue the hundreds of bears that remain in cages. This is why we're building our second sanctuary as quickly as we can: www.animalasia.org/nobearleftbehind ❤
