Wow who knew?!!! Adored the Cher version from the very first hearing but I love this for the great Mick Karn style bass playing!!

I was surprised, to find that this song was was written and performed by Jo Jo And The Real People, though not surprised that it was done in 1987 as it has a real 80s feel to it. Hats off to Tony Griffiths foe writing this gorgeous song. I dare say he has made a lot of money from it.

I knew that there was a reason why I loved Cher's version. It's a virtual remake of this one.

@@Dino-su2wh It's a bit "overproduced" for my tastes but I'm a long time Cher fan, so I give it a pass.
@TheAstrel3 жыл бұрын
@@Dino-su2wh Without detracting from the merit of having written and interpreted original lyrics and music for the author and the 1987 group, Cher's version is different and, for me, much better. It have a greater sound breath, a choice of choirs and a more appropriate arrangement of instruments, which enhances and gives more emphasis to the musical theme. The drums accompanied by the reverberation-echo of the bass in the background, give a characterization that the original lacks, which is acoustically more compressed and limited when listening. Usually I don't like remakes and of a piece of music I prefer the original, but in this case the instrumental rearrangement and the intense voice of Cher gives it a boost that makes it take off and keeps it flying. The only flaw that can be blamed on him is that he should be rhythmically a little faster. Obviously it is a question of very personal taste, but this successful remake makes me think of another case where a subsequent interpretation was more successful and brought the energy that was missing from the original. I'm talking about Flash from 1967, by Marquis Of Kensignton band, which was already a good piece of rock music but a little slow. Mario Battaini, in 1969 rearranged it, under the playful and self-ironic pseudonym The Duke Of Burlington, giving it more bite with the syncopated arrangement and making it an international success.

They never seemed interested in being bigger than the Beatles though - they are mainly songwriters for other artists, and the original version heard here never progressed past a demo. Johnny Logan recorded a version three years later in 1990, and then Cher did hers in 1996 - both cover versions are excellent and do the original justice.
